Electric trucks

I think the top one looks like an 80s Toyota pickup and now I'm wondering why Toyota couldn't just make that with one of their ICEs.

 

I think electric vehicles will ultimately be a passing trend and will fail in the USA as a viable replacement for IC engines because the infrastructure is not there to support them and an already overstressed power grid will not be replaced or added to sufficiently any time soon with clean power to charge them.
My opinion, although may be unpopular with some is just my opinion. You did ask and there it is.

I feel they are viable only in the cities where the infrastructure will be more likely to be there and commute distances will be easily within the cars range. UNLESS! the solid state batteries pan out, if that happens it's likely ICE will lose it's dominance.

Solid state batteries are said to deliver 600+ mile range and a 30 year life span.

 

Nope. Electric trucks and electric motorcycles are not gonna do it for me. I’ll find a reason everytime. Not enough range, not enough noise, too heavy for what it is…

 

I'd rather see focus on conventional hybrids (rather than PHEV) to improve fuel economy and hydrogen as an alternate fuel.

 

The top one is the Wolf EV from Alpha. Apparently that prototype is “production ready”, but it still feels like a fart in the wind.

The second pic is a Rivian R1T. It’s been real-world testing for two years and the first deliveries were just pushed back (again) until early next year. It is a legit vehicle from a company that actually has a factory and massive financial backing. I saw one of their Amazon delivery vans (prototype?) on a flatbed just the other day being delivered somewhere here in Seattle.

The electric truck I want to see on the market is the rig from Atlas Motor Vehicles. It’s a true full-size truck with dreams of having legitimate capacity figures. Unfortunately, it is still just a dream other than the initial skateboard chassis.

 

I just want to know how those of us with no real place to park and plug in can ever consider these as a practical consideration in any way?

I also think the new Tundra will be released with a Hybrid option and it certainly cold turn out to be a game changer at least as far as power and MPG goes.

Your comment made me first think of the YouTuber JerryRigEverything as that's exactly what he's doing with the H1 Hummer. I've been following, curious to see how it turns out.

 

In 10-20 years when my Tundra dies, I’ll purchase a Rivian Truck, they are the future.

 

Small electric trucks for commute, light loads, is actually a good move IMHO. I'd love to have a 1st gen tacoma-sized electric.

Gas/diesel capable workloads is gonna take a long time

 

The top one I would buy. The second one, the Rivian, I saw in Santa Barbara a few weeks ago. Doesnt look bad in person but the lights turn me off immediately. The one I saw had a camo wrap on it and I was surprised to see it in the wild. I didn't think those were out yet.

Yea, alpha might make cool looking stuff. I want the ace. But id wanna put a b16 in it or something. These new companies need to sell cheap ‘glider’ kits.

 

Electric and truck don't go together with current technology, if you're doing truck stuff then you have no range essentially. I tow my toys all the time, and in Utah an hour drive is nearly 100 miles and towing anything with any electric truck you are already strapped to even get that far, let alone the return trip. There's plenty of places around here where I have to plan gas stops since the Tundra barely has enough range between gas stops towing, you couldn't even consider those same areas with an electric truck. The performance otherwise sounds cool, and I'm not inherently against them, but the range and recharge time is the biggest issue for me. If you're talking about putting around town that's a different story, but I don't use a truck to do that.

 

I went and checked out the rest of Alpha Motor Company's cars, and they all look amazing. The perfect mix of 80's throwback, and futuristic at the same time.

 

You need that electric truck with the towable trailer generator. So when you have to go on long trips you pull a gas generator that provides electricity for the electric truck. And so when you’re going across state with your travel trailer….oh wait

Maybe. The specs are not impressive but I don't care how fast a car is, that's a rad little rally car. Disappointing that it seems to be FWD, hopefully they have an AWD version.

 

I don't get it to be honest....... A lot of people like electric because it is pushed by government and they think it is the environmental correct thing to do. Over in Oak Ridge, TN at Oak Ridge National Laboratories there is a little known disposal site for all of the lithium car batteries. For those of you that do not know, that is where the atomic bomb was designed and built and to this day, an area that is highly top secret and houses plutonium and the worlds super computer.....

They are trying to figure out ways to reuse and recycle the lithium in a more effective and safe way and develop technology to repurpose these batteries better. It is nasty stuff and that area is is one of the more dangerous and toxic areas over there.

My sister in law has a little Tesla she just got last month. It is the smaller version and it is insane what she paid for that thing! She hooks it to a normal 110v outlet charger at their house every night and it basically trickle charges it. It gets her about 100 miles every night. She still has to go to the special charging stations and do the rapid full power charges. They charge for that and costs here about $17-$22 to completely charge her Tesla so she can get the 450 miles or so out of it.

It makes absolutely no sense to buy a $60k electric car, then spend $25/week charging it, then trying to justify the costs of owning electric. Hope nothing happens to the batteries in that thing or she will be taking a second mortgage out to repair it.

I do admit though...... I rode in that Tesla once and that thing is a rocket when you get on it.

Electric at this time is one of the most hyped and false advertisement to come along in a while. That is just my opinion and my opinion only.

 

Don't forget about the Ford F-150 Lightning.

Tesla is really the only electric vehicle player with a legit charging infrastructure. We had the basic 240V Tesla charging outlet installed in our garage and it could charge the car at a rate of 24 miles range/hour. The 110V wall outlet only gets you 4 miles range/hour. Tesla warranties EVERYTHING on the dang car regarding the batteries and motors for 8 years. What Tesla didn't warranty was the leaking Liquid Crystal Display touchscreen. LCD's don't exactly work too well without liquid. That was a $3,000 fix.

 

I understand Rivian are fixing to break ground on 2 sites here in SW Ft Worth. One for their truck production and another for battery production.

 

@knoxville36 I agree completely. However if we're heading for electric, I'd like a car with some style. The tesla looks like a knockoff Aston Martin to me, I've never liked them except for their first car which was a Lotus Elise.

Here in California we really don't have the infrastructure for switching over. We're lucky if we can run our air conditioning in the Summer. Add everybody charging cars and I can imagine imposed restrictions would be coming.
