Looks like its timing chain with a spin on oil filter shown at the very bottom of this photo pointing forward. Oil changes will be simple if not blocked by the skid plate.

Nice to see them go with a spin on filter, I hate the cartridge type. I wish they would design them like the 2nd gen taco 4.0 and have it on top, oil changes are a breeze.

Sure, but then everyone in here that thinks it looks like (insert any other vehicle here) would also complain that they were ripping off Subaru's filter placement.

Toyota already did it so doesn’t matter
    9F245AC8-611B-4431-AD1E-041CC0EBAA9F.jpg

nice housing around it with a hard pipe that you can connect a tube down to your oil tray/bucket. Crack it slow and you don’t have a mess.

While I agree 1000%, the pitchfork and torch mob do not care about facts and history. Only things that can be skewed to justify their preemptive assumptions that the decades of automotive experience that Toyota has are worth nothing and this new Tundra is just going to be derivative of other manufacturer's vehicles are to be given any consideration. "It's a 3.5 like Ford!" "It looks like a GMC!" "It looks like an F150!" "It's got a coil rear end like Ram!" and various other forms of "REEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeee!"

Why does it matter if it’s on top. Still have to go underneath to get at the drain plug???

I agree. It makes no difference to me. I don't hate the cartridges either. You may wish to direct your question to one of those who is excited to get a screw on filter.

Pretty sure it’s going to be the same new land cruiser engine that we already know the filter is under the skid plate again

Yep, and the Toyota press release photos show us that there is no panel in the skid plate to access the filter. So the aftermarket has an immediately viable skid plate to offer with one surefire advantage over stock.

Maybe it doesn’t need an access panel to be changed? Maybe it’s pre production?

Doesn't Mercedes or some car mfg suck the oil out through the dipstick tube? That’s what we need.

That’s what a lot of gasser inboard boat engines do. No room under the engine so they suck it out the dipstick.

Easier to change, oil doesn't drain around the sides of the filter when you crack it loose. The problem with the ones you go underneath for like on the tundra and t4r is that you have to remove skid plates to access, up top no skid removal. Speeds up the process and isn't as much of a pain.

I saw these vehicles a couple days ago coming from Leadville and getting onto I-70 at Vail to head East. I'd guess that they had made the Copper Mountain to Leadville to Minturn loop and then back over Vail Pass to wherever they were lodging. Maybe they were doing high elevation tuning refinements to the ECU/TCU. Probably hitting Loveland Pass as well.

Looking at the video, seeing how much they cover the rear suspension still and potentially comparing it to a TTV6 navigator I feel Toyota is testing a hybrid TT V6 with IRS rear end setup which may be showcased in a 2023 Sequoia. Hard to say without seeing the rear suspension but something looks different to me.

Haven’t heard 7000 is any issue for the 6.6 gasser. This is an interesting video. Especially the rating when it’s not max towing. Who knows if the transmission will last 150,000 miles.

A thought that just popped into my head, every teaser has been on a Tuesday except for the full picture after the leak from our friend Joe Craig. Aug 31 is a Tuesday, with fleet orders starting on Sept 1, maybe next week is the full reveal? Though you think we'd have heard of a press invite being sent out. Also looks like the packages may have been updated on the fleet site, though I can't remember exactly what it was before (wayback machine goes to a Jan 2021 page). https://fleet.toyota.com/ftc/public/fleet/tundra.htm

Yeah...my wife's Mercedes is that way. I still take off the plates underneath and do it the old fashioned way. The Mercedes filter is a royal pain and at the very rear of the engine on top.

I have been following this thread since about the 200 page or so. Thought I officially join to share some news. I placed a reserve for whatever the Off-Road version of the 2022 Tundra would be back in June 2021 (Yes some dealers do take reserves even if they are not supposed to). I got an earlier email this week that my order was inputted and accepted in their system (not sure if that means dealers are officially taking orders now). I indicated to the dealer I wanted to upgrade my reserve to the Hybrid version of the TRD Pro. Dealer said there's a huge wait list for that model and indicated it could take up to a year from official release date. This is a high volume dealer. Just something to think about. You may want to start reserving.
