Benefits to modified exhaust??

So I've been watching and listening to everyone that has modified their exhaust. I don't really understand the benefits other than sound...I'm not an engine kinda guy.

Can you guys help me understand the benefits of how/why they are replaced so frequently?

I've seen mod threads but how difficult is it to remove and then reinstall? Someone had a thread where they cut off and fed exhaust in front of the rear tires. Makes sense for wheeling but why else?

Please explain.

J/k, go look in my build thread - the flowmaster stainless outlaw on my truck, I have an extra one that I intend to give to the first Tundra with stock exhaust on sunday, you won by early submission.

 

The only thing that really matters is how manly your truck will sound.

 

I have JBA headers and custom mids and catback from Keith at @dirtydeeds . I came from the TRD dual exhaust and not only does the truck sound BA but its more responsive and you can definitely feel the extra power. A similar setup dyno'd with +49hp / 80lbs trq. I have pics and sound clips on my build page.

 

Because, stock tundras sound kinda weak. And I like hearing the beast wake up when I get on it using the on ramp. haha

And all the stuff @ColoradoTJ said. Short tube headers are on my list of tundra needs.

 

Just curious, if you're gonna "get in there nice and deep like" why not go with LT headers? Unless you're looking for more lower end torque?

 

Nailed it. Looking for a little more tow power and to flatten the torque curve off-road (Utah. Better tq for those dry rocky trails). Plus, you still get a decent HP gain with the OBX shorties.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news. But it's my personal mission to keep guys from wasting their time.

If long tubes aren't in your cards just keep the stock manifolds. There's 100% of zero benefit to running shorties. Don't waste your time.

There's a right way and a wrong way. Some aftermarket exhaust are just sound. And even lose power. Won't name any names.

Tundras are very sensitive to exhaust system changes. It's easier to make it worse than it is to make it better.

Since we are on the subject, I was under the impression that our trucks came stock with 4 into 1 headers instead of a manifold. Am I incorrect?

 

Kind of. They're an archaic, yet genius old school tri Y design. They're timed, and sized (both their diameter and length) to take advantage of the low pressure pulse behind the high pressure pulse of the cylinder which just fired.

Without this scavenging the high pressure pulse of the firing cylinder actually reverts into the next firing cylinder thru it's exhaust valve. The reversion makes the engine less efficient than one without vvti.

Long tubes don't cause reversion. The tube length is so long that it's not possible. That's why long tubes make ridiculous low end torque on our trucks. And their larger size also makes superior top end.

Shorties just randomly place tubes that don't tune the firing of the exhaust into the collector right. Their length is random. And their length is too short to stop reversion. They're a guess on the part of the manufacturer. Where stock manifolds were designed in a thermal dynamics program by Toyota.

Long tubes are a guess too. But with a 30" primary they're gonna make power no matter what.

With how high tech our engines are every part of the exhaust system is critical. Including the catback. If using stock manifolds you want to work with Toyota. Not reengineer what they've done. That only works with long tubes.

That's not being the barer of bad news. I decided on shorties just based on my own personal research. But I also have watched and looked into everything you guys do and trust your word over the majority of research out there. hahaha So this is good cause now I know and have a trusted source!

I'll keep that in mind when I decide to go for it. I have the Dual budget dumped on my truck right now (got it second hand from a member) and Loooooooove it btw. Get compliments on the sound all the time. Just the right amount/type of sound IMO!

 

BTW. This makes perfect sense. I know shorties are designed for retain pressure at the exhaust valve but I wasn't sure what kind of role that played with variable valve timing. I've used them on older rigs (c10, F100) but neither of those engine platforms used any sort of VVT. They definitely introduced a wide spectrum of low end torque. Is it the VVT actuator that allows exhaust spillage from cylinder to cylinder or is it actually exiting to the exhaust header and reintroducing itself through the exhaust valve?
