Smart relay for Access Cab/Regular Cab trucks with DRL?

While searching on my '06 Tundra at Diode Dynamic's site, it clearly says their CF18 isn't for Access Cab/Regular Cab trucks with DRLs. That would rule out at least my '06 and the '05 also I guess, both have DRLs, eh? I see their site saying the 01-18 Highlander, which had DRL through many years, is supported, so are Double Cab trucks. Maybe Tundra 05/06 uses a different pinout with DRL trucks or something?

I want this product mostly for the smart-tap signal option, not for the hyperflash protection. Their FAQ suggestion of buying resistors to overcome hyperflash isn't helpful to achieve my goal. I'll probably call them shortly just to ask directly but had some other stuff to handle and thought I'd ask here first.

 

Ok, got on the phone w/DD. Long story short: They say the pinout on the [AC/RC] trucks with DRL is supposedly different, thus their standard DD CF18 flasher won't work. They don't make a product with the correct pinout for the AC trucks with DRL, or so they say,

I vaguely remember reading somewhere the trucks with DRLs have something like an 18-pin (or 16-pin) relay and non-DRL have a 6-pin (or 8-pin) relay, I'm bad with numbers so I might have the 8- and 6- swapped.

There was also mention at other forums Toyota may have an adapter to convert from the higher-pin to lower-pin so you can use the DD product. However, I'll probably need to scour here, TS, TundraGeeks, and a couple other places to see if anyone else has done it, I guess.

No solution available to get a smart relay for [AC/RC] trucks with DRL as of January that I could find. DD guy mentioned they have no intent on creating such a product. To my knowledge, there's no solution for us folks with DRL, DD says the flasher socket is different # of pins, different footprint for DRL 1st gen trucks.

Hopefully a solution comes one of these days ...

 

I’ve got that smart relay on my 06 with drl’s. Disconnected the drl’s under the hood and swapped in the different relay under the fuse box

They specifically told me this wouldn't work, the relay under the fuse box in DRL access cab/single cab trucks doesn't have the same multi-pin connector.

I confirmed, my truck's connector doesn't seem to match the pinout and pattern of the CF18 product DD is selling, mine may have several extra pins, assuming I looked at the correct thing.

Not sure what's up with your truck that makes it different from mine, unless you have a double cab instead of a single cab/access cab (which looks like is the case under your avatar)

Sucks this is different across two different body types of the same truck. But I guess that's the case with lots of stuff on the 1st gens ....

 

I've got an 05 DC with DRL but my DRL are unplugged under the hood. So, I can just plug in the Smart Tap and I'm good to go?! Sweet! Thanks @Cummins3500 and @shifty`

 

Bummer about the AC trucks. I have seen a few posts in other forums about an adapter harness and slight change to the pinout that allowed it to work on some 4th gen 4runners, GX470, and maybe GX460 as well. I wonder if that might work for your AC?

@shifty` It’s blows my mind how much variance these trucks have. And the sequoias different from the double cabs even more

 

I mean, I'm open to any non-fire-hazard plug'n'play solution on the market. Personally, I don't want to dig through pinout diagrams and cobble something together without getting an electrical engineer involved. There's a reason those EE make the big $$ and companies charge a premium for products (usually)

Easy way to tell: Find the flasher relay next to your fuse box/left of e-Brake pedal. Pull it. Does it look like this, with this footprint/pinout? If yes, you're golden. Order up!

 

Looks like it should work! This is the flasher I currently have in my first gen:

 

what style plug does the DRL use? the 4th gen 4runners had the DRL and non DRL flasher setup. but the difference was the non DRL uses a jumper harness to adapt the flasher to the DRL style plug. this harness may be usable for disabled DRL 1st gens.

 

My 05 double cab with DRL has the CF18 plug and the above SmartTep relay has been working great.

When you say you have DRL, do you mean your headlight housings have the small teardrop-shaped DRL bulbs in the corner, like this? Or do you just mean your headlights have a DR: function where the low-beam turned on any time the truck was running, at like half-power? Curious to know.

Would it help if I went under the dash and took a picture of the connector? If this adapter works for my truck, this would be so f'n awesome. The only two things I'm constantly thinking, "man, I wish my truck had this" are a convenience flash and being able to tap down on the windshield wiper stalk once to wipe the window.

Curious, did you ever get a chance to test that adapter out on the GX460? If it didn't work, and you want to get rid of it, I'll kick you some bucks to ship it one state north.

 

Hey man, I have both. I have the little corner parking lights inside the housings and I also have the DRL which turns on the main headlights at reduced power anytime the truck is running. I've disabled the DRL by unplugging the grey connector next to the battery FWIW.

If you pull your flasher relay and take a pic of the top and the pins I can compare it to mine and the 460s. If it's the same size and shape as the DD smart tap, I bet it will work.

I have the adapter here but haven't looked to put it in the GX yet. Been too busy with work. I'll definitely post up when I get it done tho! And of course if it doesn't work, I'll send it to you.

Sure enough, Diode Dynamics is full of it. I definitely have DRLs, and I definitely have a 2006. I also definitely don't have the 15-pin or whatever they said my truck would.

And just in time for a holiday weekend. Wonder if they'll be having any deals?

 

When you refer to DRL are you referring to the small lights in the corner of the headlamps (teardrop ones) or the actual H4 headlamp bulbs lighting up at a 'low' brightness level (truck on, lights off)?

 

The little corner lamps are on all the time. I assumed that was the DRL. I'm actually not sure if the main headlight is on at low brightness during the day.

 

Looking at that relay, it’s the same as mine. I think when DD refer to ‘DRL’ they’re thinking of the amber running lights in 2nd Gen Tundra and 2nd Gen Tacoma which act as switchbacks from the factory. No FGTs had anything like that if I recall correctly. Anyway, I’m 99% sure the DD smart tap will work for you like it did for me.

 

The corner ones are not DRL. It's a system that uses the headlamps at reduced output.

Aaaaaaagghhhh! I just fell victim to the RTFM!!!

 

Worst part is they jacked up the price almost 35%. Damn things are 80 now instead of 60. If they wouldn't have misinformed me at the start of this, I could've saved 20 bucks!!

 

I tagged them on IG when I installed the relay and someone wrote me a DM and thanked me for the shout out. Seems like a down to earth smaller company. Could always call them and ask for the $60 price and inform them of their mix-up.

 

Turns out through the 10th of this week, they're offering 15% off with code LABOR.

That gets it close enough to $60, despite these being on backorder, so I went ahead and pulled the trigger. Still cost me almost $80 bucks after ship, but I'm good w/it.

Cool to see this mystery solved. I ended up ordering another from Amazon before the price increase. Diode dynamics was showing it out of stock on their website but the thing dropped shipped directly from them lol
