Is a snorkel worth it?

Yeah I appreciate it for what it is, but wouldn't want it in my front yard either.

It would be cool to plant them under windows to deter burglars or creeps.

 

I've been watching a show called Aussie Gold lately. Most of the episodes are north of Kalgoorlie where it's hotter than hades and dirt roads. Red dust everywhere. I've noticed that most vehicles are running with snorkels and I'm fairly certain it's because of that dust. Fine red silt dust. Could be an Aussie thing but doubt it. Damn dust everywhere.

Unfortunately flash flooding is also a real thing in those areas when it does rain. So a snorkel attached to a sealed up diesel is good insurance to make it home.

 

Im currently running a dobinsons snorkel on my truck. I also ran one on my previous vehicle (100 series land cruiser). Honestly the biggest function of it is the looks lol (and the intake noise). Yes it does help get cleaner air for sure and thats important on the dusty roads im always on in a convoy, and even the rare water crossing we have in colorado. I think its worth the $300 for what it does. Cutting the big ass hole in the fender is the hard part.

 

Lol. You brought back memories for me. It took me 2 hours to drill that first large fender hole. 1 hour and 58 minutes to measure, re-measure, hold it up to compare, drink coffee, re-measure and 2 minutes drill the actual hole.

 

Two weeks ago I drove a road with 5 water crossings. Some of them can be deep but many are not. Sometimes it's impossible to tell how deep the water is until you drive in it.

I'd like to have a snorkel for that reason but I'm not thrilled about cutting my fender.

No clue why that was there. It's a public road in North Georgia. I'm guessing they were trying to keep people out of the driveway to the right.

Just remember that air to the engine is only one component of a water crossing. In most cases with a GAS engine you will suffer an electrical failure prior to an airbox one. That's why a consistent bow wake is so important when going through water - it reduces the amount of water that makes it past the radiator and to the alternator and starter.

Before a snorkel, seal your existing airbox (easy to do on a 3.4), extend the diff breathers, plug all of the firewall holes and check and clean up your door seals.

 

Yeah. A couple episodes had some heavy rain events but the locals stay away from washes and gullies when out detecting anyways. The guys that are using trommels would never set one up in an area prone to flashfloods. They all just hunker down until the rain stops. Their biggest concern is the crazy bush wildfires. They will skedaddle fast....raising dust

Snorkel is a better choice then the TRD intake that do nothing.

 

Instead of going into the cowl. I just looped the suction tube around to the back of the engine to get it out of the fender.

I'd rip a snorkel off in 5 minutes around here. I wouldn't want to go in water above the wheel well anyway, that's begging for problems.

Snorkels in the US are mostly larp.

Nice. Unfortunately for me, my engine bay is completely open and it’s just as dusty in there as in the wheel well.


I’ve been thinking about routing it under the fender and out the side.

Just waiting for @KevinK to tell me it’s a horrible idea or @osidepunker to tell me it’s a great idea. Then I’ll do it.

 

You forgot the 30 minutes to slam 4 beers for the courage to drill a hole that big into a perfectly good fender.

 

I was just about to say run the snorkel in the cab, and if you have the AC running, that's your cold air intake right there. Plus there hopefully ain't much dust inside your truck

 

Lol at that open airbox. I tried to find info on what you desert guys were doing about the intake in the fender but I didnt find much.

I thought about running the intake into the cowl, but rain and water splashing on the hood I think would go right in there. Not sure about dust. I don't know if an intake outside the fender is a good idea either. I think the tire would be spitting dirt right into it. Hmm.

 

Maybe something like what they have for the Tacoma?
