Remote oil filter relocation for ALL TUNDRAS

Searched the forums and have not found anything on remotely relocating your oil filter. I am going to do some R&D and see if I can engineer my own remotely located oil filter system.

Found these guys and they have these adapters for 2010 - 2017 4.0 and for the 4.6 and 5.7 V8's all years. They are on the west coast and I am calling them to find where I can get the remote mount spin on oil filter plate.

I ran something similar on my Old Taco's (before they put the filter up on top of the motor) and it was great. Carried 2 extra quarts in the system and the spin on oil filter plate was mounted up under the inside of the frame. The to and from lines acted like an extra oil cooler.

Found these filter plates from Barns. They have the standard H filter size and the large 6" filter size.

Wil do some measuring and location scouting. Closer to the stock filter location the better to not loose any oil pressure coming out of the engine through the filter housing.

 

I can get some nice beaded stainless oil lines made to length and this should work great.

 

Curious to see how this turns out.

 

Did I read it right in the other thread where you posted this that they cost about $200 and you would need another 2qts of oil? That's a lot of $$ for an alternative to dropping the skid plate a few times a year.

Don't get me wrong...I hate having to drop the skid plate but it's much cheaper to just cut a hole in it or something.

I am to poor to go cheap. I plan on changing oil quite regularly and for a long time on this truck. Its the life blood of that engine. The time saved alone on just 10 oil changes pays for the rig, the extra oil, AND MY TIME OVER THE LIFE OF THE TRUCK. The whole mod including the oil lines will run just short of $400.00


You can do the math and see what oil changes will cost over time going through a Dealer or through your local Quick Lube. Most auto supply will take your used oil. Over time I am saving money and time. 5 min do it myself oil changes that take 5 mins each is worth the initial $400 buck investment to me.

My old Taco's NEVER suffered from running over recommended oil change time and they had the added protection of two additional quarts of oil and the oil was in theory cleaner longer because there was more of it. I bought filters by the case which also saved money and time.

 

Crossing the Atlantic in a row boat is also cheaper than flying across it. That is if you already own a row boat and live on the east cost right on the beach.

 

Why not just cut a hole in the skid plate for access, or fabricate an access door?

There is being cheap and being efficient.

Interested in doing this myself also. I like the ability to Add oil to the system, lets it run cooler to.

 

So has anyone figured out a way to fabricate a filler hole on the top of the transmission with a dipstick. I saw on another tundra forum that someone fabricated a filler neck that went to the top. They then Fabricated a dipstick which could accurately measure the tranny fluid level. It only cost like 300$. I wish I could find the info again. I really want to do that mod.

 

Hey man...not trying to knock your idea - to each their own! I too am cheap and that's one big reason why I too change my own oil. But for 2, maybe 3, oil changes a year, $400 in initial cost and approx. $10 in extra oil each change, I will personally live with the skid plate removal or put in a hole/access hatch.

Good luck with the mod though - I think a lot of folks (including myself) will be curious to see the outcome

 

Baxter is coming out with the entire package to re-locate the oil filter and are incorporating multi ports on this set up so that you can also add an additional oil cooler. They are already producing these for the Diesels over seas that see hot weather, slow speed, hard pulling work. The inverted spin on filter can be located right behind the grill. They are even producing the set up for as big as 8" spin on filters.

Looks like about a $500.00 mod not including an extra oil cooler when its all said and done. Here in Texas the additional cooling will be much needed and appreciated. I am assuming that the rock drawing, snow bashing, and Baja Racing crowd might be interested as well.






Think that I will go ahead and spring for the kit. 5 min oil changes sounds good to me vs some quick lube or a two hour wait at the local Yoda dealer each time.

Thanks for posting this Jim. I've already got access in the RCI skid but I like the idea of having more oil in the system. Not sure if I can or will do this but it's nice to know I can if I want.

 

I guess I got spoiled with 10 years of quick oil change capability on my old Tacos. I got even more spoiled with the top filter placement on my 06.

This new Tundra set up with the filter being behind the grill vs back up under the truck mounted on the frame will only require about 1/2 a quart extra oil to fill the lines.

Ive got a kit on the way.

My lift has a custom skid plate that covers my oil pan and I will be adding the front skid plate that ICI has for their Magnum line of bumpers. I do not want to be constantly taking all that crap on and off changing oil. So very much worth the expense and time savings to me at least.

 

Sounds pretty cool Jim. Little extra oil never hurt any engine. Question about the remote filter location, you were saying behind the grill. I assume you mean somewhere in the engine bay and not having to remove the grill each time. Do you have a spot picked out ?

 

MFG said that I can mount the spin on filter plate behind my grill. I am assuming that he said that because I have a 2nd Gen and the grill goes up with the hood to provide right there access to it. I was wanting to mount the spin on filter plate back under the truck on the frame some place but will look to see where might be a good spot behind my grill.

 

Now that makes sense. I wasn't familiar with the 2nd Gen grill. Sounds like a great location and will get good air flow too.

 

Aside from convenience, what are the pros/cons to moving the oil filter? Is the added cooling from extra oil/longer cooling run noticeable? thanks!

 

Better get the Diamond hole saw. It will cut steel alot better than that one. Teeth are too corse on that one?

 

You want to mount it under the hood so it's easy to get to. That's one reason for the name "REMOTE ACCESS."

 

Got a response form the manufacture of this filter re-locate kit. Over $600.00 OUCH!

Think that I will take the skid plate on and off and get the quick drain tube OR just drink coffee and wait in the lobby for a little bit at my local Toyota Dealer while they do it.

 

They have one that takes a screw on filter. Don't know if it clearn the skid plate. Might need spacers.

 

Bumping this thread, and adding a bunch of stupid questions. Has anyone done this with a 2.5-gen (falling in line with that '2.5'... Covid shots are next)? Are there any warranty implications? Is it really saving that much trouble? Any other comments?
