Using the Navigator to benchmark is not all bad. Ford has tended to lead on engineering of full size vehicles for years.

I'm actually sad to hear that, the powerboost seemed really cool and I was hoping that Ford got it right.

Ford probably will get it right, but in typical Ford fashion they use the first adopters as unwitting beta testers.

Everyone gets wrapped up in the Toy"aura" of this supposed "perfect" reliability. Yes, they're more reliable in general but just like the big 3 even Toyotas have problems now and then. Problems such as these are rare for ALL brands. This issue that this crow eating member describes is talked about more here than on the F150 forum I'm on with Dr. Zoid.

The big difference comes in the 100,000 plus stage of any vehicle's lifespan. Once you get past the first few thousand miles with one of these "horrible" Ford/Chevy/Ram that most of you think need to tow a trailer with a live mechanic on board, they are usually as trouble free as the Toyotas while under 100k miles, especially when you consider the issues Toyotas sometimes have.

Same boat with my 2nd gen3.5 eco. I'll likely wait 2+ years and see how things go while hoping a '21 with the tow package will hold it's value.
Be interesting to see how things stack up in the 1/2 ton world over the next couple of years.

My experience the only difference between the Tundra and the “big 3” is I can spend my money on mods for the Tundra and I had the spend it on repairing the “ big 3”!

Just being up front: I am a bit suspicious about Toyota reliability. We bought a 2020 Corolla with the bigger engine and 2-speed CVT, and it is nothing like the old 4 banger with the 4 speed auto. That's what Toyota built their reputation on. Everythings fine so far, but we've only put 6K miles on it in 2 years. I have had a few "whats THAT sound!?" moments.

We have new 2021 F-150 Coyotes at work, and I feel they won't be good long term. They have motorized shifters, what the heck? Who seriously expects those to be trouble free? Even the column shift models have motorized shifter that can move back to PARK if you try and get out of the truck when it's in DRIVE. Noble idea, yes.
But, the one I drive, the upper glove box won't close 95% of the time and the infotainment system is always rebooting.

People may be like "whatever, take it back to the dealer for warranty" yeah, like my boss cares that those 2 things are malfunctioning (and he shouldn't) so we have to remember every annoying issue with the truck if it ever goes in for something serious that warrants taking it out of service.

Consistent with my experience, but I go tired of owning a vehicle for 100,000ish miles and trading it in or selling it for squat.

'02 Chevy 1/2 ton 5.3L, no "problems" but at 106k miles, going into gear that was a jolt in drive or reverse that felt like a small earthquake, traded in for 6k in '07. Replaced with '08 F150.

'08 Ford F150 - good for 165k with minimal issues (Triton V8), then entire dash went out. When it was replaced, everything worked, but the headunit and windows took 30 seconds to work after the vehicle started. No one knew WTF that was or how to fix it. Private Party sale $6,500. Bought a used "15 Tundra XSP-X with 85k miles for $25K, now with 95K and worth $30K, absolutely no issues and looks better than my Platinum IMO.

'12 Ram Limited, one of the first Limited's built. Mechanically sound. Brakes squealed like a transit bus, sunroof leaked in hard rain, a/c went out at about 100k, was recharged and held for a year. Traded in at 120K miles for $17K in 2018. Replaced with 2018 Tundra Platinum, paid 46K in 2018, about to cross 80k miles and zero problems with trade-in still hovering around $40k.

So are domestics bad trucks to 100k? No, not terrible. But as I tell friends when the. ask why the Tundra, " it' is because I'm better off financially owning my Tundra with it's piss poor gas mileage and throwing a $100 bill out the window every other week than I am owning a comparably priced domestic."

So do the domestics suck? Yep,they suck the cash right out of you.

And I agree and it's why I am here and why I'm considering the Tundra and longing to see what the new one will be like along with all of you (even after being burned by that garbage Sienna). As I get older I'm enjoying selling/buying/trading vehicles every few years less and less. I own a 2015 Ram 1500 and that one holds the runner up position for the longest I've ever owned a vehicle. It still feels new to me (probably because it has under 35k miles on it). I'm deathly afraid of keeping it though because I don't want to get caught with it when things start to decide to "go Dodge" on me and break. However, as my post alluded to, I was talking to/about the folks who DON'T keep them over 100K miles and it's here where the big 3 do pretty well overall.

Not me. I love my 1st gen. I'd consider a used 2nd gen with a supercharger though to trailer my 1st gen to the trails

Half the comments are insecurities about Ford and GM. Yes, Toyota is using Ford as developers for new trends in engine development. Most know Toyota will build a more durable product. But it is funny coming back to this thread and still reading about Ford vehicles.

I think all the domestic bashing is kind of funny considering some of the Toyota frame recalls over the years. My 19 Tundra has about 1/3 of the tech that was in my 19 Ranger, and speaking as someone who develops the kind of tech that is in these vehicles, your customer can find new and innovative ways to do things that your testing team will hardly ever find. Usually any problems come up in the weird cases, you might think that your scenario isn't that different, but things like timing, order of things, even your key fob being an inch farther way from normal can trigger issues that they didn't find in testing.

All that is part of why I wanted a Tundra, I didn't want all that extra stuff.

That's crazy. I owned a 2013 F150 with the 4.2" screen (and if anyone here has owned that particular system you *KNOW* how crap it is), and it did the same thing. It got to be so bad that they actually programmed a 'master reset' into the system. (Unfortunately, to get to it, you had to drill down through about 4 sub-menus...which was not at all helpful when the system was frozen up...which was at least 2x a week for me.)

I mean, all it has to do is not freeze up all the time. I'd like to say "How hard can this be?" But based on what I'm reading...evidently pretty hard for Ford.

The tundra has a master reset. Just hold down the power button for a few seconds. Sometimes my phone doesn’t connect or music won’t show up until I reset it. There was a guy on here whose screen was upside down. Tundra isnt completely free of issues.

I have nothing wrong with a person buying the truck they want. It is a tool. You tried it and do not like it. There is nothing wrong with that. Good luck!

Right, and I've used it....but that's kind of my point.

Ford: *traverse 4 sub-menus and press "Master Reset" assuming the system isn't frozen; if it is....wait*
Toyota: *press and hold button for 5 seconds*

It's not necessarily perfect, but it's one hell of a lot better than Ford's system.

It's "Two Week Tundra Tuesday", and did Toyota post a picture of a Tundra? YES! Though the 2021, the trolling continues.

I don't think anyone has mentioned this yet. Are there any thoughts on this style of whatever lever/shifter this is?

    upload_2021-8-24_8-48-21.jpg

It's not your typical automatic shifter right? I'm not sure what that flexible piece is called, almost like a bellows maybe? Anyhow, does anyone else think that's interesting? I can't imagine there being a manual option, but does that not look like a manual shifter? Maybe I'm not thinking of something obvious. It's not the 2WD/4WD selector either since that's directly to the left of this knob.

Toyota has been wrapping their shifters in leather in the newer models.

Above is the 2022 Land Cruiser shifter, looks similar to what was leaked in the interior shots of the 2022 Tundra (below).
