2000 4.7 V8 Tundra smoking on startup. Smells of gas rather than a sweet coolant smell, but I don't know enough to rule that out yet. Any tips or ideas? Goes away after a short time running, and isn't as pronounced if it hasn't been sitting a while.

These pics are within 5 seconds of each other (couldn't post the video for some reason).

Is your coolant level holding? Have you had to add coolant?

Also pop your oil cap and look underneath it.

Coolant holding steady. What am I looking at under oil cap? Looking for moisture?

I have never had this happen on a vehicle, but it is what it feels mostly like. Is there an easy way to test the injectors or should I just replace them all? Otherwise runs great, doesn't leak, its great.

Recently had coolant checked and replaced (when I got the truck) and they had no concerns with it other than it was due because of mileage. I admit that I did not check it myself at that time.

This is the other culprit we've seen happen before.

Seeing if it's frothy and tan.

Thanks guys, I will do some poking around. It smells very strongly of fuel, so that is what I'm hoping the problem is. I'll report back (probably after the weekend) if I have any update.

Check PCV valve. If it's stuck at start-up it could cause crank case pressure to force oil past your rings.

It's possible that using a fuel injector cleaner may unstick the one(s) sticking. I would start there and follow the manufacturers directions. If that doesn't work you'll have to pull them. Not hard. If it's not a daily find a reputable local co. to test them and rebuild them.

Edit: I've never had it happen yet either but it does happen and it's what it sounds like your issue is based on your description.

Smell of fuel or burning oil? Can be valve seals or more than likely a sticking injector is flooding a cylinder overnight

But it can very much be oil

So is that valve issues, piston ring issues, ???. Wondering if that is fixable or if it means rebuild time.

Usually on first start it’s a sign of valve seals.

Smells gassy to me....but I can't say I've had an oil-burner vehicle before to really be able to tell the difference.

I'm not sure what the issue was. Mine was definitely burning oil, I bought a regular cab and sold the oil burning cm so I'm not sure what broke inside the engine.

If it's oil burning the smoke will be a bluish-white. Yours looks more whitish but it may be the pic or my tired eyes. Lol. So, if it's valve seals (oil-related) the smoke will be bluish-white.

There has never been a blueish tint to the smoke (to my eyes anyways), regardless of how long it sat between startups. It is that puff of pure white smoke, then clears up almost instantly.

Pure White sounds like coolant to me. On a side note at least your cylinder will be really clean

My experience with coolant leaks is that the smoke doesn't go away, as a cracked head just stays cracked while running. I sure hope it isn't that :(

Does it start up easy? Or do you have to apply some throttle like a flooded engine?
I've always thought over fueling will create a blackish smoke.
I'm sticking with oil smoke, OP's pick looks blueish grey just like my oil burner

I hate I'm the one always caning the SeaFoam around here, but the shit works and if you're considering replacing the injectors anyway, you could give this a go.

Get some of their Fuel Injector Cleaner specifically. I'd forgo the instructions. Get down to 1/8th of a tank and use a whole bottle in the tank. Worked wonders to fix a stuck injector on my '03 GenIII LS motor in one of my prior pickups.

If the smoke isn't bluish-white, it isn't oil-related. And, please, don't go to JL for it. Lol. And, you're correct, if it were coolant, the smoke would be constant and smell sweet.
