Power outlet fuse keeps blowing

hey fellas I have a 2011 Tundra the other day hooked up a portable air pump to put some air in tire and the power outlet fuse blew. I checked 15amp fuses and found 2 blown replaced them checked the 30 amp under the hood and it looks fine when I put a new fuse in the power outlet 15a box under the dash it seems to instantly blow. Not sure what’s going on but none of the outlets are working. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That is 2 years ago and only 1 message, doubt he is around... I would start by checking grounds.. usual culprit of blowing fuses followed by open or damaged wires

 

Thanks for replying that quick. Yes, I’ll have to start checking the wiring. Could be a multi plug as well that may cause it. I’ve been using it for a long time though. I’ll update once I find the problem.

Definitely check your multi plug unit. Try something else in that outlet to see if it works without blowing the fuse. A bad multiplug unit caused my outlet fuse to keep blowing. Turns out that there was a crack in the plastic plug itself… caused an improper connection and would intermittently blow the fuse. I wasn’t able to diagnose it until the crack got bad enough that it blew the fuse almost instantly.

Thanks for the advice. I think I found the problem. You know Tundra has 2 cigarette lighter plugs, the one on the right was wobbly for some reason. So every time I plugged something there the fuse would blow right away. So I pulled the dash section cover that holds the two plugs, disconnected the wires from the back and took it out. The negative and positive plates from the back were loose and I guess that’s what it caused a short or something. It also could be the wires connected to it. Gotta inspect that too. Anyway, it’s been few days without incident so it looks it’s something wrong with that plug. I’ll buy a new one anyway and put it back.

You just have to enlarge the hole a little to make it fit.

 

Rule of thumb , those 12v out lets are not rated for high amp draw , just because the device has a 12v plug doesn't mean the 12v out let is rated for the Amp draw. The wires are tiny as hell like 22 gauge that run to the 12v fine for charging a phone or two but nothing more.

on a RV or boat or a custom install of 12v outlet it maybe wired with 14 gauge an be built for higher amp draw. Thats when those 12v do all plug devices are okay.

as always check what the circuit is rated for if the device or multiple devices are higher amps than the circuit don't use it.

if its rated for the amps and the fuse blows while its inserted switch to another approved device if it doesn't blow the fuse than the old device is bad.
If the fuse still blows with new device than theres a bad ground or short some were.
If the fuse blows and theres no device than the outlet its self is bad or theres a short in the power wire some were between it and the fuse.
