Is a snorkel worth it?

Doing some reading and some guys saying moving the intake up the pillar helps keep it out of the dust and not in the fender well, which makes sense for dust created by my own truck...even though I'm moving forward and the dust would be behind me...but on dirtroads with trucks in front of me it seems it would be in the dust ALOT more. And how does heavy rain & snow effect them? I don't plan on waterproofing my truck and siliconing everything or submerging it. I do like the idea of more cleaner fresher air (even though the engine will only use what it needs)
And I'm also a nerd that thinks they look cool, ha.
Besides aesthetics, if I don't plan on submerging my truck...is it worth it?

How quick does your air filter get dirty and how often do you need to replace it?

 

Both answers are not often.
It's typically a hunting & winter truck. So sees wetter/snowy climates. But that doesn't mean it doesn't go down dirt roads to get to the fishing lakes

 

Honestly, I don't think so. I do a heavy amount of backwoods driving in northern BC and AB on dusty roads. I haven't had any issues. I just replace my air filter when I do my oil changes, they're so cheap. I'd only bother with a snorkel if I was doing deep water crossings.

 

Fair point. Stock is tried & proven. I've never had an issue either, just. Wondering to my self.

So. Purely aesthetics. So it only lowers it on the priority list. If it was a bit more practical/functional I could justify it to my self.

Since you don't plan on submerging your vehicle, I wouldn't even bother unless you really want the cool look of it. Even then, the only snorkels that do anything are ones with cylindrical pre-filter style heads. It's common to get MAF sensor issues with the normal style heads, even after the computer learns it. In the end, any gains you get from the snorkel for your usage will be negligible, unless once again you just want it for looks (which by all means do it, I think they look rad haha)

 

Outside of swimming with your truck they serve the same purpose as the hood scoops.

 

I’m the opposite. I really need a snorkel but just can’t get over how stupid they look. Maybe one day when someone comes out with a low profile hidden stealth snorkel I’ll get one.

 

You could always run it to your wiper cowl. Search undercover snorkel. We have a first gen member that did this.

@KevinK did it on his 3rd gen. Good enough reason for me not to do it.

 

Looks like you're leaning against it now, but if you do and your truck is typically a winter truck make sure the intake is facing backwards or you’ll end up with an intake packed full of snow.

So I did a snorkel on my 5th gen 4runner(tjm) mainly for cooler intake reasons, which proved positive from scan gauge readings. But for some reason our stock setup shows almost the same differential as my 4runner with the snorky. So I don’t know if I would really have my money invested in that area at this time in my life.

 

I ran a snorkel for almost 15 years, including tens of thousands of km of fire roads in BC and Alberta.

If you are truck 3 in a convoy on those fine dust roads north of Kamloops a snorkel really does help. We are talking the kind of dust that even inside the truck you taste it and it’s everywhere. Instead of cleaning the airbox every few hours it was just once a day or less. But, in my experience, it’s only really worth it for dust if you’re in a convoy.

For water crossings, the airbox is only one piece of the system. There are so many other things that water can cause issues with. However, a snorkel is extra insurance if you have done all of those. I’ve crashed through ice on river crossings twice and had water suddenly up and over a windshield. The snorkel saved me those times.

As far as engine temp it made no material difference in my experience. Only a few degrees.

Snow in the winter? Yeah, experienced a bit of that too considering Canada and all. Turning the head on most ARB style heads defeats the engineering. It’s designed to keep rain and snow out and push water out the sides of the head. I have only ever had to turn the head around in one or two VERY heavy and wet storms. One where it was so wet and heavy it caked the entire head.

With all that said, I don’t have a snorkel my Tundra as my needs have changed.

I also have heard a version of a drunkard at a work party getting stuck to a fishhook barrel cactus twice in the same night!!!
Thirdly, momma bear LOVES to park super close to those and open her door into the cactus, I then find them when I’m washing the lower door panels in the paint!!!! Those pricks are no joke!!!

 

@FrenchToasty the house I grew up in had some cactus, similar to prickly pear but was a little different. It was so bastardly it would shed needles if the wind blew right and they would go over the fence and stick in you. It reminded me of getting itchy from fiberglass. You don't see it hit you but you feel it.

I was JUST about to say this. So funny that we both noticed this. I love plants in general but that one looks terrifying. My buddy lived in Santa Fe for a little while and would let their cat out to explore. She came home one night with cacti needles in her eye which they had to remove!

 

It’s funny both of you like it so much. Personally I’ve wanted to strap a chain to it and rip the whole bunch out, for the sole fact that she keeps parking to close and opening the door into them, I give the meanest glare if I’m in the car when she does it.

 

I don't see why yall keep such evil plants around. That's like a damn land mine in your yard.
