I have been told to not buy a Tundra now because used trucks prices are very high right now. Not being familiar with what a used one should cost, how do I know when I find a good deal? It seems most 2014ish stock 2WD 5.7 liter trucks with 50-70,000 miles on them in good shape are pricing out between 30 and 36,000 from dealers. This does not sound reasonable to me.

    Thoughts?

use kbb.com true value or edmunds car values to get you in the ballpark. You enter the truck info, trim, options, miles, etc. And yes, vehicle prices are very high. Buying anything right now you will be paying top dollar.

40k? Then it would not make a lot of sense to buy a 5 year old one with 60000 miles for 35k. I like how they hold their value.

You really just need to read everything you can and search until you are OK with what they cost and that you know what to expect.
I would not rely on anyone but myself honestly as we each have a different tolerance for what makes sense and what does not..

Since you seem to know already that they are crazy high right now either search until you get lucky or wait, not complicated just frustrating.

They cost what they cost and are worth what someone will pay for them.

I think there are still deals to be had out there but you also need to be more careful than ever as there are a lot of gifted liars out for your money too, many at a Dealers lot.

Good to know. Thanks. I am excited about getting one. I have not met a person yet that has or does own one that anything negative to say about them. I am 60 and this will be the last truck I hope to own so I don’t don’t want to compromise either. I am looking to tow corvettes around to various events. I live in Georgia and will stay local. Is there any advantage in a 4WD versus a 2WD? It will may be used for “work” or off roading.

Well, if you go anywhere that you can get stuck, you'll be far less likely to get stuck :D.

Prices seem to be all over the place right now, theres a nice 2011 with 97k miles for 25k$ down the block from me. 4 in lift, clean. Seems like a decent deal with all the crazy prices people have been posting.

My towing experience is pretty limited, but I have loved going to 4wd on my tow vehicle. plenty of times I have run out of traction, for the road/load, push a button and voila, whether its just an awkward driveway, a dirt road in the rain, towing in an unexpected snowstorm or a steep boat ramp, it is a nice upgrade. As far as pricing, I'd guess that 2014 2wd 5.7 was about $35k-$42k new depending on options etc. so it is a bit of covid supply/demand bump to pay $35k 7-8 years later. Whatever you can afford, is for you to decide, I don't mind keeping a car or truck for 20 years so for me I value the reliability/low long term cost so I have paid the Toyota (new and used both business and personal use) markup 8 times. But this current market is not for me at dealer prices.

Its whatever the market is able to get. The dealers will be piced highest. That is a bit high and the dealer can get many financing.

Let this roll around in your dome, I had a 2012 Crewmax, 98k miles,6" lift, some ugly ass 20" chrome wheels.
It would start and run, smoked oil smoke really bad, needed the engine replaced.
I was able to sell it within 2 weeks of posting it... $12,500

Yep, before the pandemic hit the truck I mentioned would have probably sold for 20 (out on this coast that is), now when I see it for 25 I think, hmm, seems like a good deal lol.

Just bought a 2019 5.7 Double cab 4wd with 9000 miles on - Mint Condition- for $41,900. Traded my 2011 Tacoma with 57000 miles near mint paid $30000.00 for it new in 2011 got $22000.00 for trade. I feel good about the deal. Found the Tundra at Car Max. Always wanted a Tundra guess it's a bucket list thing at my age of 68. Used mainly to tow our camper.

4wd is nicer to go more places off-road, or when road conditions change, but you’ll give up a little on towing/payload with it… Depends on how much total weight and towing versus driving when not under load for your truck’s intended purposes. 4wd tends to be more in demand from a resale/holding value, but if you’re planning to buy as a potential last truck that may not factor in as much for you. I’m in AZ and wouldn’t go without 4wd for some of the off-road terrain or when muddy/snow slush mountain terrain gets up North in our winter months.

Here's a link to Edmunds, looking for Toyota Tundras... in SoCal, 100 mile radius. You can input your Zip, look in your area!
    https://www.edmunds.com/inventory/srp.html?inventorytype=used,cpo&make=toyota&model=tundra&year=2003&initialUrlPattern=make/model/year

I bought my 2003 4 months ago, I paid 10k for mine, with 197k miles. But it did take 4 weeks of looking, as anything decent sold within minutes.
I got a great deal as my 2003 was rebuilt from the ground up, with no rust anywhere, SoCal truck

    Good luck looking!!

If you don't get off the pavement or live in a place where you get winter weather 4wd is not worth it. The one exception is launching a fairly heavy boat on steeper ramps. If I was 60 and buying what I thought was my last truck I would buy new.

It doesn't sound reasonable because it's not. Don't let anybody tell you that you should have to pay more for a used vehicle than a new one. I bought a '19 SR5 double cab 4x4 with 12,500 miles last year for $35,000+tax. I had to search cars.com like a hawk and pounce on it within minutes of posting, but there are reasonably priced vehicles out there. We're in the same boat looking for a RAV4 for my fiance. The new ones are $28k but a few weeks out. The used ones are $35k and they are ready to go. These dealers are taking advantage of people- pay book value and not a penny more. Don't be afraid to walk away.

So I found a 2018 plantinum with 34000 miles. Looks to be in excellent condition 4WD beautiful blue color, leather seats ......etc. for 47,000. Not sure of the bed length. I want at least the 6.5' bed. it does not say what the bed size is. They also have a very nice Limited addition 4WD with 55,000 miles for 42,000. It seems like the best value is with the trucks that are 2 to 3 years old. It seems like the older trucks cost way too much relative to what is being asked for newer trucks with far less miles on them. I also like the idea of getting a transferred warrantee as well on a newer model.

All crewmax cabs have the 5.5 bed for 2007-2021

Also if it helps, I jumped on a used 2016 Plat with 65k miles for 38,000 in Jan2021 which wasn't too bad for a 1 owner and a original sticker price of 53,000.

I finally purchased a new 2021 Limited 2WD. Cost a little over 50,000. Funny thing is I have not even had it 24 hours and check engine light has come on. Now it is in the shop. I have had a bad week regarding cars and trucks. So it is official, the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned is a 1990 B2600i Mazda Pick-up currently has 235,000 miles and still going strong. Ironic and sad at the same time.

Honestly, it all depends on it's condition. Some cars are in so great conditions, that you can easily say that it's like a new one, and for example if we talk about online resources where you can find such cars, I can give you source which is well-known as a Drive Axis. It has plenty of nice used cars' options, you should check that out.

Just picked up a used 2007 183k miles, 4x4, double cab, 5.5ft bed for $12.5k. Just another data point for you all. That was a fair price from my research for a double cab/4wd setup.

If I wanted a 5.7, 4wd Tundra and was looking for value the Gen2's would be where I'd look. 2012/13yr.

Find one with a good maintenance record and be willing to fly/drive.

    My biased 2¢
