Used SC Question

To all the SC gurus on here do you think it is worth getting a used SC to save some coin. I found a TRD one within driving distance for $4500. This is from the ad. Thoughts? Maybe can get it for less as well but I just reached out and asked a couple of questions at this point.

Also, you will want to upgrade your fuel pump and get it tuned- the dealer can install the supercharger calibration or you can go with the BullyDog tuner for the SC tune.”

 

I did, $7k is a fat coin and my truck cost $15k when I bought it so that's nearly half the price for one modification course in retrospect I would pay new it I had to. I don't see any reason still to not get a used one, the biggest hassle is tracking down all the parts and as long as it comes with the reservoir and radiator and most of the odds and ends I think it's worth it. A fuel pump is under $200, and there's a host of tuning options nowadays (I'm partial to HP Tuners and VictorGs custom tune). I recently had my supercharger fully rebuilt by Superchargers Online, and replacing essentially everything besides the housing (rotors, bearings, oil, all the shit) was $2500, so for $4500 assuming you had to replace every fucking part you wouldn't be at a loss compared to a brand new one, and the chance it needs that level of rebuild is very low.

If it comes with the majority of components, and spins freely I think it's worth a shot. I'd ask how many miles are on it too, if it's getting older (like post 50k) you'll want to look into bearings and oil change, which from SO is $1200 or you can do it yourself cheaper. Main thing imo is does it spin freely.

 

I picked up a low mileage unit a couple years ago. One thing of note is that the location of the intercooler reservoir is in two different locations on earlier versus later model years. Some of the intercooler mount locations are different too. My install was from a 2016 to a 2011. Yours would be a 2008 to a 2016, so expect some differences and a need to make a couple custom alterations. I don't know when the transition occurred, but I'm pretty certain that it's easy to overcome, the hose routing (reservoir to intercooler to blower) would be the biggest change. Another item would be the lines to the oil cooler if your truck has one as part of the tow package. They're hard lines and are typically removed and replaced with other hard lines with a different routing. I removed the hard lines on my truck and replaced them with flexible heater hoses and frequently check them to be sure the clearances are okay and nothing is leaking.

Although it's available from SuperchargesOnline (when I was doing my install) try to be sure to also get the coolant crossover manifold. It's a cast piece that connects the two cylinder banks. I think that hose kits can be purchased as well, they can have other hardware included too. Might be worth it. You'll have to see what you can get off the doner vehicle.

Sorry to hear that OP, I just sc'd mine with a used TRD blower ,and,"oh what a feeling"!
Took it to dealership and had my ECM reflashed with SC tune yesterday. Zero problems on my 275 mile drive home. Shout out to @Wynnded and @snivilous for the links and input for helping me get it going. Thanks guys!

 

Might be worth it for $3k but i wouldn’t go through all the hassle for $4500. You can’t discount your time either, you can do a lot of other things besides 6 hours driving.

But do let me know if you do supercharge, I need to see one in person before I can take the plunge!

 

Shit, we had to trailer mine 6 hours to a dealership just to get my ECM reflashed with the SC tune.
But it was a fun drive back after the tune was installed!

 

Jesus you towed it just don't get into boost and you would've been fine, even in boost probably fine. Same goes for running low octane, just be smart and it'll run fine on 85

 

Yeah man I really thought about driving it, I'd been driving it back and forth to work everyday without any issues, but that's only 6 miles rt.
There's a couple of small hills to climb going to Fairbanks from where I live, I just didn't want to fuck anything up, cause that's one thing I'm good at, it's fuckin shit up! Lol
We have a gooseneck trailer and 3/4t truck so it was nothing but a thing

 

Will a SC kit that says it's for 2011 - 2015 fit a 2007?

If it is, it should fit no problem.
I remove mine from a 2012 CM and installed it on a 2007 regular cab. No problems at all.

I asked the seller. I hope they're included. I don't see spark plugs on the list either.

 

I had a hard time finding denso ikh22 plugs locally so I went with NGK 2309 they seem to be working fine.

Anyone have the PN for the high flow injectors? PN PTR2434070? But it says it doesn't fit 2007.

My local Toyota dealer said they won't do the flash. Then, the bitch hung up on me. RUDE!

 

There's two Toyota dealerships in Alaska, one is in Anchorage about 100 miles away from me, the other is in Fairbanks,I had to take mine 275 miles north to Fairbanks to get the reflash done, because I had the same problem as you, except for the hang up.
Keep searching other dealerships around your area someone will do it for you

Also your can download the installation instructions and it has a parts list maybe with part #

 

I'd try to get the TRD injectors from dude if possible, they're not cheap:

If he won't give you them, I know there's other options which may be more cost effective and which can flow more fuel for higher power. Might be worth looking into, though adds another layer of stuff to tune around potentially. Considering it looks like most stuff comes in the kit you bought, there's a chance the injectors are in there and just not listed. When I bought mine it didn't list the injectors coming with it, but they were in the box.

I would talk to someone else at that dealership if you want the TRD tune, most likely that front desk bitch doesn't show shit and the fact you're asking something "custom" is where you ran into issues, need to talk to someone in the shop who actually knows how to do work. You can also go with HP Tuners, VF Tuning, or other options which don't require using techstream to flash the truck. Additionally, if you have the right cable and techstream, you or someone that's not a dealership can flash the TRD tune as well, though it might be a bit more labor intensive since the dealership would be the most familiar with that process.
