Really? Mine would embrace it. But we also hire ironworkers, so this would be considered “clean” compared to the things I’ve seen on their hard hats.

    I'd rather pay for it.
Not to bog this down with true stories, but...
When I was 18/19 I was at then VPI&SU, now VA Tech. There was a cave close by that was well known. One of my friends from HS came to visit and we decided to go spelunking. We went in with one flashlight and six beers. It was pretty awesome, including the belly crawl under an overhang beside an underground stream full of blind cave fish. It took a while to find our way out. When we did there was a bat hanging over the exit hole. All stop. I said go poke him and duck, he said fuck you, you do it. Turned out the bat didn't care about us. The exit hole was in a cow field about four miles from where we parked. Got back to the truck and went to Pizza Hut, covered in dried mud, but with a credit card. Pitchers and pizza.

    LOL…
I spent my first 5 years out of college doing short turn-arounds/shut-downs with Millwrights and Boilermakers in various industrial plants (paper mills, chemical plants, oil refineries). Go in for a 12- or 16- or 24-hour shutdown, and then get everyone their layoff checks and out the door at the end of the job. And if things weren’t going well, jump in and turn wrenches, run for parts, do whatever it took to get the place back online.

It also meant traveling with a group of “regulars” that ran and did a lot of that work for our company all over the greater Northwest (all of Montana, Idaho, Washington, and Oregon). Hauling a load of tools over in a dually flatbed, staying at the same motels before and after the shutdowns, watching all of the shit that went down in the motel parking lots, hearing all of the stories…

Almost all of them were members of the Bandidos MC, and “1%er” was a sticker on nearly every hard hat (I’ve sported a few over the years). I’ll just say that when I started working with ironworkers, I found them a bit tame after my time with the traveling millwrights. :eek2:

My father was a lifelong millwright.
He didn’t drink or cuss, quoted scripture, read his bible and tried to lead prayer groups.

Needless to say, he wasn’t the most popular guy until someone needed praying for.

Oddly enough, for such a God fearing man, he still beat the ever loving shit out of me as a kid.

I did the Steel mill thing as well.
Millwrights and boilermaker are pretty damn hardcore.
Gotta hit an oil rig to get any harder.

Before the tour started the guide, which was Dave, said "Don't touch anything and don't pick up anything". What do you think my grandson did immediately??? Dave is one of the 4 miners that still work the mine but also do the tour. Manny got right up front during the tour touching EVERYTHING! Dave was kuul. He knew that kids want to learn and have inquisitive minds. Going back up Sunday. I already rented a sluice. When you rent the sluice you get to go across the creek outside the mine where tourists don't get to pan for gold. I already have my pans. Dave does the weekend tours. He will have the alien slap on his helmet and will be posted here. By the way...Dave said we are not normal. We are the crazy folks. I guess working in that mine for 40+ years since he was 14 makes him sane. I agree. A beautiful place. I'm 65 now. Done a few things myself. Quite frankly the outside world is somewhat fucked......

The first one that took me under his wing was a General Foreman that had a tattoo on the underside of his arm and down his ribs that was a pair of legs. When he lifted his arm, you were staring straight up the hoo-hoo. He claimed he liked them bushy, but when he got really drunk he’d shave it and show everyone the detail under the armpit hair.

The things I watched those guys bring into their motel rooms (which they often shared with 3 or 4 of them to save their per diem money) still make me cringe. And there are stories I don’t dare share here…

    Ha!
    I know stories, sadly.

Tuesdays were always big with my crew when traveling.
I’d give the guys a weeks worth of per diem on Monday, they’d get settled in and buy their beer, then it was on... Tuesday and then Wednesday if they still had funds.

    Nuts!
