Anyone running the Hypertech Interceptor, in their 2nd gen.? Looking for thoughts and opinions.
I've heard Bully Dog does more, and is better. However, don't think I could talk the wife out of $600. The $350 is a lot more reasonable.

Well, I read another thread regarding the same things. Seems as if it has to be Hypertech. BD doesn't make a anything for a 4.6L.

just got off the phone with them. spoke to a nice fellow named jack. but im still a bit confused of how it all works saying you may to have to tap into more cables...and he said he would throw those in for me for free...not feeling so confident anymore about what im doing. and for one it doesnt change the speedo. he said hypertech has a plugin that can do that.

really i briefly looked and it was around $300. idk if its worth it anyway. ive got a garmin that tells me my speed too. right now with my set up im just a few miles over. when i go bigger i can just guesstimate. i can live without it. just want to get more performance out my truck. so if it can do everything else im good with it

The Hypertech Interceptor and speedometer are 2 separate items. The Interceptor will run you $360-$380 and the speedometer will run. $175-$200. Best thing to do is call Hypertech and talk to someone in the tech support. It also breaks them both down on their website.

before we go too far whats your limit on this project again? When you get into stuff like this chips, tuners and speedo stuff it add up very quickly into 2 grand range plus truck down time getting it set up. If budget is key here buy stuff over time make it easier on your wallet. Nothing says you have to install it when it comes in. just a idea.

this is stuff i really know nothing about. im familiar with tuners and such. and my basic understanding is you can gain hp and get better fuel mileage. a friend told me that i shouldnt mod anymore without really being able to tune my truck. of course i would love more hp and better fuel mileage. but i also want to make sure that my truck is running at its best with what i have done so far and what i plan to do later. i also have another friend that believes custom tuning is the only way tuning is worth it.

The ecu in Tundra is apparently very had to crack. In other words, there has never been a clear choice regarding the chips for Tundra. Right now the most promising ones are HT and BD (both of these are relatively recent products)

There are some very long threads on various Tundra forums on this topic. I have neither HT or BD, but what I gather from reading these is the following:

    1. HT doesn't seem to do much. After a while, the ecu relearns the changes and adapts, so you are back to square one.
    2. BD does seem to do something. But there are some members whose ecu is fried because of BD.

At least that's what I gather which makes me nervous enough not to try either of them.

If money is not an issue, get the supercharger. I think every other power mods pales in comparison. I know it's a lot of money, but you will be hard pressed to find anyone who's unhappy with the supercharger. Other items tend to be hit or miss and in much smaller increments.

haha. i have thought about it. but thats a lot more money than the tuner. if i was going to spend that much. i would seriously consider getting a new one. but i love my color and everything about mine minus some hardware. and im also not sure if they make them for 4.6L. ive only seen them on the 5.7

He has 4.6... super charger is not a option.. never made.

Only option you really have is a piggy back system. Where the ecm is a slave to the main chip is master. Only option you have. Unichip with piggyback.

I didn't realize that you had 4.6. One option is to trade it in for a 5.7, haha.

id rather do an engine swap/body swap....it would be a pain in the ass. but if i find one thats wrecked...idk we see what the future brings...just finished paying this guy off and not interested in car notes again. just pay for it cash. but if i buy i may not stay with a tundra. got a thing for diesels now...hopefully toyota will make one.

It is real hard to find a used 5.7L and even harder to find a rebuild. There is a Jasper Engine Shop near where I work. We calibrate their micrometers, calipers, pin gages, etc. They aren't rebuilding the 5.7L. There is not enough used motors out there to rebuild for them to start up a new line. I'm thinkin our motors are too good.

Both Toyota and Nissan are looking to have their Detroit Diesels out hopefully by years end.

Dealer told me a couple of weeks ago that the Tundra diesel was a no go for 16. Haven't seen a Toyota with a diesel at any major auto shows yet either.

Not going to happen. With tighter epa set now on diesels now and with the added def crap to the mix. Toyota and nissan both where going to use the 5.0 cummings I think toyota has had a change of heart GOOD.

Toyota is a world leader in diesel technology. Hino a toyota partner and a nice big block of isuzu motors really the diesel section.

Toyota does build a v8 diesel here and you can already get one. If you dont mind paying the price for the conversion. 30 grand to conversion that is. Funny part toyota has diesel parts in there warehouses here in the usa.

That said toyota would be very stupid to put a cummings in there trucks (go buy a dodge if you want cum a part engine). If Toyota was smart they would use there hino division and make a engine that could complete with fords famous navistar 7.3 that engine is still a bench mark to today diesel line up.

    Just my .02 in this..

Using a Hino powerplant makes the most sense. There was one in early development in 08 but the prevalent tanking truck sales stalled that indefinitely. Toyota/Hino diesels have been used in HILUXes all over the planet. Heck, even ISIS prefers them when they are not using our Humvees that we left behind. The EPA has been a pain in the ass but Toyota still could have gone with the EPA approved Cummins the Nissan ended up using. The salesmen at the dealer said that Cummins got a lot of push back from Dodge about letting Toyota get the diesel too. Apparently Dodge doesn't consider Nissan a threat but a Toyota Tundra 1/2 ton with a diesel could potentially put a dent in their diesel truck sales. And Dodge buys a lot of diesels from Cummins. Toyota will be better off going with the Hino powerplant that has been under development anyways. It just has to meet the new Obummer EPA cafe standards.

The Titan hasn't gone under any significant changes since it's inception in 2000. The 16 Titan XD gets the diesel upgrade, new body works, a 13.5 inch rear diff on a half ton. Tundra had the biggest for a while at 10.5". The new Cummins Toyota almost went with has less torque than the 5.7L. Better mileage though. Better to wait for a Toyota engineered diesel with good torque #'s
