Question for everybody! I've always driven a manual vehicle so using the parking brake has always been a given. But it was brought to my attention while talking to my cousin who has more mechanic experience that me (seeing as he is a mechanic) and a few google searches. Saying the following when parking your car (even automatic vehicles):

    1. Pull into parking space
    2. While car is still in drive and foot is on brakes engage Parking Brakes
    3. Put car in Park
    4. Take foot off brakes.
and reverse for leaving parking spot.

The claim is its better/easier on your transmission, which i can understand. The example that was brought up was.

Have you ever put your vehicle in park and when you release the food brake your vehicle still rolls forward a little bit? I have... not necessarily in the Tundra but in other vehicles. The idea is that little roll causes unnecessary tension/friction and in the long run of things is bad. I'm no mechanic by any means so i'm not sure how true or how much damage this does.

So besides the parking brake question... Has anybody else noticed a Roll in their tundra? with or without the parking brake? Do you do the method above? Do you live somewhere with a lot of hills? Or somewhere flat?

I personally live in Florida where it is flat... So I never thought about using the parking brake in an automatic. So now i'm trying to instill that into my routine need my tundra to last FOREVER! :benchpress:

Watching to see what the recommendation is. I've only used once or twice and usually engage parking break once car is in park and off (or just before I turn off). Never really had much of a need to parking break since car is automatic.

I always use my parking brake and follow the above steps, sometimes I put it in neutral before applying the parking brake. Came from a manual trans and had a mechanic tell me the same thing your cousin told you. Not sure if it helps take pressure off of the trans but what can it hurt...

Might make a difference in the long run if you park on a hill every single day... maybe. I rarely do so I'm not even going to stress on it.

The way my cousin said it was VERY LONG TERM like I may never see an issue due to this but if I planned on keeping the truck LONG term it wouldn't hurt do to the steps above.

And I would think its releasing the foot brake after putting it into Park and then the truck moving and putting pressure on the transmission that is bad. I think it would actually be better to put in Neutral, press parking brake, release foot brake to let it settle, press foot brake again, then put it into Park.

I use my parking break every time.. just a habit.. but for sure use it before you put it in park.. when you put in park then use break after, you hear a loud CLUNK noise from tranny. Always use break before shifting into park..

Use my parking brake unless it's just a super flat parking lot/garage. I try and avoid the extra tension on the parking pin.

Here's my routine....not sure if it's correct but it seems to avoid the bang/clunk when parked on a hill.

With my foot still on the brake pedal I put the truck in park
With my foot still on the brake and truck in park I set the parking brake
    Foot off brake
Hope out and give a quick look back at that badass Tundra

On Edit: I should add that on a bigger hill or incline I will put it in neutral and set the brake just to see if I have the parking brake set firm enough to hold the truck without the help of the trans.

I just learned a new technique from @boardude. If you want to look back at your truck and don't want to be obvious that you're just turning around to look at your truck, pretend the remote lock isn't working and pretend to try to push the remote button while you're looking back. :D

I'm like you, I learned to drive in a manual and my first two vehicles were manual so it's second nature for me to use the parking break. I use the method you stated above. Someone also told me this when I was learning to drive and it stuck. My driveway has a slight slope so I always use the brake. My truck still rolls a little bit after setting the ebrake and releasing the brake pedal. This is in park.

Has anybody else done this and get a small bump when letting go of the foot brake?
