undercoating

Recently purchased a 1st Gen in great shape with little to no rust underneath and want to keep it that way since its 21 years old. Can anyone provide an easy to apply annual application at a fair price that I can do to prevent any rust without adhering to components like glue?

Ok, heard fluid film..aerosol cans seems easy...effective?

 

The aerosols is definitely the easiest, but you can be more long term cost effective buying bulk with a compressor powered sprayer. Personally, I have been using the aerosol cans with the 360 degree spray nozzle to get into the holes in the frame. I just try to keep it off rubber and anything that gets really hot.

Fair warning, it's lanolin based so it smells like wet sheep.

 

Well first I gotta ask: where do you live? If you have no rust now, then why apply?

Good video. So the only 2 that beat FF was Flex Seal and CRC. Flex Seal is a rubberized coating which I would never even consider. CRC seems like a great option though. Personally, I like FF because it's relatively cheap, easy to find, and lasts long enough for my needs. The box portion of my frame has some rust and since that area doesn't get very wet in the rain the Fluid Film I put in there last year is still there. I might pick up some CRC though just to try. The reviews on Amazon are positive.

but yeah, fluid film is the way to go to prevent your frame from further rusting on the outside.

 

Woolwax would be worth a look. Doesn't smell like fluid film. I have had pretty good luck with it and it's been thru some northern Iowa winters. A lot of brine and salt used here.

 

This is the same vid I watched a while back and I think his testing techniques are excellent. Based on his testing... I'll be applying the CRC next time for sure.

 

When I bought a new bed, I painted the frame and bottom of the bed with Rust-Oleum. Then coated the frame and bottom of the bed with CRC. Going forward I'll probably do a yearly Fluid Film in November for double protection. And I like that fluid film flows into tight spots. Now I wonder if fluid film will dissolve the CRC.

I don't know much but I feel I'm an expert at rustproofing because I take care of my vehicles and I live in an extreme rust belt. I kept a 98 Tacoma rust free for 12 years before I sold it.

I like Woolwax, Fluid Film, Krown and tried them all. My favourite is Cossmoline RP-342 on a truck that hasn't had any type of rustproofing added.

Getting that black asphalt coating from the dealership is terrible up here. 3-4 years it's flaking and thick rust under it as it falls off.

There's a cool shop up in Edmonton that dry ice blasts your undercarriage then applies something very 'Cossmoline' that they call honey, big bucks though.

What I'd suggest is a box of Cossmoline RP-342, amazing stuff. Get a good coat on a vehicle that hasn't been 'Fluid Filmed' yet. It doesn't harden right if you try and go over Fluid Film or someting like that. Then after a couple good applications of RP-342 you can either continue or go to the Fluid Film types. You can't go back after applying Fluid Film though. Wear a respirator spraying any of them though, bad shite for the lungs no matter how environmental friendly they say they are.

Interested. I see it available in spray cans listed as standard black or "Heavy Duty". Both say "Military Grade". Which do you recommend?

I go with just the standard 'Heavy Duty'. It leaves a gold kind of a colour. Even nice to do some of the aluminum parts like transfer case so it doesn't get pitted. Key is that you have a vehicle that has never been fluid filmed or an oil like product. It won't dry to a nice dry waxing coating if sprayed over a surface that has oil on it.

Black colour is nice for a new look effect on some frame, diff, or other metal frame parts but I hesitate when it comes to getting the black colour on anything else. I read that Cossmoline on the outer surfaces and Fluid film sprayed in the inner cavities is a good combo.

I have a can of Fluid Film and Woolwax black right now and will use them someday but I want to Cossmoline 2 times a year apart then see how it goes. Nice it doesn't attract dust when all dry too. If you drag your fingernail over it, it'll easy scrape off like a soft wax.

The only garbage undercoating is the black asphalt stuff from a dealership or some detailing shops. Looks so nice for the first month as moisture slowly creeps in between the spray and the metal of your truck.

Hope this helps, just my .2 cents living in an almost arctic climate where they dump all kinds of chemicals not just salt on the road.

Thanks for that info! They don't use salt here but do use mag chloride. It's not nearly as bad as salt but still corrosive. Likes to creep and bubble under powder-coated stuff especially. I stay away from powder-coated accessories because of that.
My frame is in good condition with the exception of basic surface rust and flaking of the OE black paint. I don't have equip to blast it but do have air equip with a needle gun and grinders for prep. I may just go with the Cossmoline black, allow to cure, then follow up with CRC (Fluid Film type of coating).

 

I think you'll be really happy with your frame protection with Cossmoline, especially since it's pretty clean and just surface rust. I also heard that CRC has a new Fluid Film type coating that's really good too.

If you go with spray cans a 'spray can spayer handle' is a must. You'll go crazy pushing down the button with your finger. I have a woolwax spray gun that was worth every cent too for Fluid Film or Woolwax.

A few better sprays out there instead of fluid film but due to my location it’s the best stuff I can find locally and cheapest. $12CAD/spray can on sale, apply two cans a year and have been happy with the results.

 

jack , have you ever tried it on black boots? Any discoloration?
