Dreaded tire size post (I've searched until my brain hurt. A little help?)

This is going to be long winded....

I got my toytec/boss 3/2 lift with JBA UCAs finally done today. Got the alignment done (toe and camber in spec and caster set at ~3.2*). I'm on stock platinum wheels with 295/60r20 ridge grapplers.

The wheels/tires look strange to me. I'm not sure if it's the major positive offset of the stock wheels making them look sucked in/small or what, but for being basically a 34" x 11.5" tire they look tiny.

I have a co-worker with a similar lift that has 285/70r18 (similar in size, actually slightly smaller than my current tires) ridge grapplers and his doesn't look strange at all. He does have aftermarket wheels. It actually looks great IMO, and the tires don't look small like mine do on my truck. What is this sorcery??

Here's my multi part question.

I'm pretty sure I'm going with icon rebounds (either 17" or 18" with the +25 offset) because that offset seems to be best to minimize rubbing and I think they look great.

What would be a good size a/t tire for filling out the wheel well? I don't want BFG or Nitto (haven't had great experiences with either). Every manufacturer seems to have different sizes available so selection seems limited.

With that positive caster would 35x12.5 fit without BMC? I don't mind moving the front fender liner, but really don't want to do a BMC. What other tire sizes would y'all recommend?
I don't have pictures of the truck with the lift installed, but I can get some tomorrow.


I know tire questions suck, but I've done so much damn research and I still can't decide haha. Pictures welcome as well.

285/75/18 are big, think of thinner 35s and they are easier to fit than 35s.

35s often need BMC. No way to know unless you try them, Ive seen a ton of folks need it and a few get away without it, but they had a great alignment tech get camber++ right.

The new wheels will be wider than the stock 8 inch width and have more offset, so will give you the look you want. Personally I would go with 285/75-18 if you are wanting as big as possible but with easier fitment. That size will also be lighter than true 35x1250s.

I looked through that "how to fit 35s" thread a couple of times, but couldn't find anything with alignment specs similar to mine. The OP also didn't have true 35x12.5.


I'm wondering if it's just somewhat of an optical illusion causing my current tires to look small.

I'm considering 285/75r17s with the icon rebounds at the moment. Cooper XLTs and Falken WP are both offered in that size.

i'll measure mine when i get home but measure how much space there is between the bottom of the fender and the top of the tire. its hard to see with the glare. You could do wheel spacers to bring them out if you want to keep the same wheels. Forgot to mention...mine are a +1 offset.

I think it must be a combination of the really high factory offset and the lower profile tires with the stock 20s that make it look strange to me. I'm probably going to go 285/75r17 like I mentioned above. 1/10th of an inch taller than your tires and same width.

 

I'm at 9.5" from top of the tire to the bottom of the fender in front (.5" more in the rear)

25.5" from center of hub to fender in front (.5" more in the rear)

 

That’s entirely your offset being a +60 for how they tuck in the well and the wheel design having a flush face makes your tires look smaller. If your tires are still in good shape (lots of tread left) I’d recommend just getting 20” wheels in a different offset <+60 (i.e. between a +10 and + 25) and remounting your existing tires. You will need a new alignment regardless so they’ll recalibrate with your new wheels. The closer you go to a 0 offset the more likely you’ll run into possibility of a cmc/bmc because of how the wider wheel will turn at near full lock. Your 295/60R20 is already essentially a 34x11.5…so not sure the extra inch (technically only 1/2” taller) would do much by way of getting new 35” tires. The 11.6” width will also help you with upper control arm clearance and likely less need for a cmc/bmc than a 12.5” width

 

Agree with above in it being the offset. Drop the offset down on whatever rim size you prefer, and get a tire with some obvious side wall lugs (helps differentiate the tire from wheel well shadow).

 

3/1 with 295/70 18 (34.6") on TRD wheels, no BMC, removed front flap and trimmed skid plate.

 

First pic is with my truck with Toyota tss wheels 20x9 +50 offset running 33x11.5 (285x60r20 ridge grapplers) no clearance issues at all running level kit; I switched out to 35x11.5R20 Ridge Grapplers briefly before ordering new wheels when changed out suspension to Westcott TRD Pro lift - had to remove front mini mudflaps with this setup (not pictured, but looked nearly identical); the second pic is my truck running Black Rhino Duggers 20x9 +10 offset with the same 35x11.5R20 Ridge Grapplers - had to remove front larger mudflaps, and was rubbing the liner behind the fog lights due to the offset.

Stance on the TSS wheels with 35’s was flush with my wheel well (maybe a hair past with the sidewall tread on the tires), tires look larger than yours when I was running 33’s (IMO) because the wheel face came in with more of a lip on the wheel design and the 10mm offset difference; stance with Black Rhino is 1.25-1.5” outside of wheel well, tires look much larger due to wheel face being more concave, larger black outer ring, and offset.

In terms of ride/height of sidewall, keep in mind a factory TRD Pro runs 275x65R18 (32x10.8” with a 7” sidewall height) your 295x60R20 has a 7” sidewall height as well so should be similar ride in terms of rubber cushion around the wheel…you’re just an inch taller overall (2” x 1/2).

 

Also, fwiw, I am still running factory upper control arms, no cmc/bmc needed, and was able to have Toyota align within factory specs every time I made a change. Maybe I just got lucky with my truck/suspension setup…but I’m sure staying 11.5” wide versus 12.5” helped (also significantly cuts down on tire weight…probably difference b/t 13.3MPG and 13.1MPG )

 

I like those duggers. They do look way different even with the same size tires. I think you're right about the wheel design making a big difference in perceived size. I'm thinking I'm going to go with a a +25 offset wheel just based on what I've researched all over the internet about what rubs and what doesn't.

 

Looks great. I'll probably go a hair smaller (Still considering the 285/75r17s) just so I don't have to trim metal. I really don't have the desire to do that lol. Your truck also makes me want the blacked out headlights haha

 

Thanks-I went back and forth between dropping wheel size to an 18”, but am a bit biased in thinking 20”s look better on Tundra body profile. Dropping down from 20’s to 17’s will be a drastic change in look. If your 20” tires are in good shape and already an A/T or off-road oriented tire; save yourself $1-1.6k on new tires, and just replace the wheels—trying to save you $$

Lots of people pull off great looking Tundras with smaller wheels, and I know it’s better for airing down with more sidewall for those that do that much serious Baja/off-roading (35s on 20’s still have 7.5” of sidewall). I personally wouldn’t run smaller than an 18” on these trucks for cosmetic reasoning. Tundra looks right with larger wheels, and I have never taken my truck somewhere where I thought “if only I had 17’s I could have…” (I have thought “if I had a shorter wheel base…” on some trails)

I know others will disagree because Raptors run 17’s/18’s, and look great, as do Tacoma’s & 4Runners but different lines/squatter build/different wheel base etc.

End rant…

Also, I’d agree a +18 to +25 is the safer zone.

 

I did run 17’s on my decade and a half old Tundra once upon a time (‘06 Doublecab with BBS wheels—long before Toyota started using them as OEM on their Tundras…should’ve gotten consultant royalties on that lol)

 

Lol you should. I had 17" chrome plated steel stockers on my 05 Silverado with 275/65r17 falkens and loved that setup. That's partly why I'm leaning toward 17s on this truck.

 

Well I have some 17" icon rebounds on order.

Now to choose the tires lol

I really like the look of the icon rebounds…what color did you go w/? That was the other wheel I was considering when looking for my truck…although still wanted to convince you to go 18 or 20”

 

I looked at that size too, a little taller and a little bit narrower.

 

went with black. I'm not sure the bronze or titanium would look good with the sunset mica. I really like the titanium with gray or black trucks and bronze with a black, white, or red truck. I decided to keep it somewhat lowkey for my truck lol

I strongly considered 18s, but I found a pretty good deal on the 17s so that's the direction I went

 

285/75R18 aka the skinny 35”. OEM Pro suspension. No chopping, trimming, or cutting. Removed small mud guards in front of front wheels.

 

Love that army green color. Couldn't find one anywhere near me.

Probably going 285/75r17 (34" tire) simply for the fact that I just ordered 17s haha

 

Well I got an email from the seller today that the Icons are out of stock (showed 9 available in their inventory) so back to the drawing board I guess.

 

Those stock wheels have a high offset; either +50 or +60. That is what is making the tires looked sucked in.

Here is my truck with 295/60/20 ridge grapplers, 20x9 +20mm offset wheels, and a 3.5" lift:






This setup left plenty of room for the tires and only required a small amount of trimming. With over 3* of caster, you should be able to fit 35's without having to do the BMC, but you will have trimming to do on the bumper liner (or get bumper spacers).

 

Yep this confirms it. Thank you. That looks great. Do you rub anywhere with your setup? Sway bar, fender liner, etc? Also do you know your caster numbers by chance?
