My brother picked up a 2016 Tundra so he sold me his old one for my boy. He gets his permit next spring and his full license a year after that, but he will now have a good truck to learn in while permit driving and eventually be tooling around town, to school, on the beach, and to the huntin n fishin spots!

the truck has 217k miles and is in very good condition. My bro bought it in 2005 w 45k miles and had it dealer serviced including the recalled frame replacement. I paid $5000 for it which was about what Kelly Blue Book estimated it’s value. It has a leveling kit on it so it sits a bit higher than my tan/green cap 2001. The only other difference I found between mine and this one is my horn is louder standard horn and his has the foreign squeaky sounding horn. And my 2001 has 195k miles on it but the body has got many more dings!

My 7 yr old lil guy already snapped the access cab window latch….which my other boys both did years ago on my truck…so it’s zip tied shut….but wondering if you guys ever fixed that part and where to get it….I wud need 3 between the 2000 and 2001 trucks! Lol

Also….the passenger side power window has a loose wire so the switch is duck tape covered til I fix that….anyone ever mess w fixing 1st Gen power windows?

wife gave me some gruff bout buying it so far in advance before the boy actually gets his license but the truck stays in the family, now we both have common bond tundras, and he and I will drive it occasionally on the woods roads to keep it active and keep miles off my truck, as adding it to my insurance is only $480.

Any other tips to get this truck ready for him or to keep in mind til he drives it everyday?

Lucky boy, good on ya. He looks like a good kid. It got me thinking, my first car was a 1962 Corvair.

@Adventundra Congrats and great choice! 217K miles is just getting broken in for these trucks. I would just call out a few things you may want to look into.

    • lower ball joints are weak point on these trucks-there was even a recall. It's recommended you do NOT go aftermarket and if they haven't been replaced anytime recently I would do that soon. Many have suffered ball joint failures leading to damage to truck. Could be dangerous for your son.
    • Has you brother replaced the timing belt in the last 9 years or 90K miles? That has to be done if not.
    • At 200K miles, if the radiator is original I would consider replacing it. It is removed with 4 bolts and very easily. Denso is the way to go on the replacement. I would probably also flush the old coolant and install a new thermostat while you're in there.
    • You can go to Toyota.com/Owners and input your vin # and it will show any work every done at the dealer since you mentioned it was dealer serviced. This might answer some questions for you.
    • Those rear window latches can be replaced easily. Check this thread. https://www.tundras.com/threads/access-cab-window-latch-repair.26105/

Looks like others have pointed out the window latch problem. It's been an issue since the trucks were new. I may have a set of aluminum ones from my previous truck (spares). If I can find them, I'll let you know.

    Nice truck.

Thought someone on this forum was making and selling the hinge piece but could not find him or her.
Just fixed mine. Amazon, search "window latch hinge pivot", $8 plus shipping for two of the metal pivot links.

    Nice looking trucks!

Give him a proposition... If he doesn't help work on it, he can't drive it.
