If you could only have that conversation with him 7 years down the road. I wonder if his tone would be the same.

On the other hand, if it sells it in 3 years, does it matter how well it holds up at 7? Remember not everyone's priorities are the same.

I'm guessing with AWD all the time it would be less MPG? And probably not enough power for donuts :). Not that I would want to spend the money but I wish the TRX and 392 wrangler was not AWD all the time.:burnrubber:

A thing's resale value at 3 years is dependent on the expected reliability of that thing in 7. So even if you don't have it at 7, it still matters.

My concern then would be how well it does in those 3 years. I don't like hanging out in the service department or driving rentals. But I don't have first hand experience with the Ram.

I give ram down the road same as the rest of us as far as reliability is concerned but more than likely IF someone kept it for 7 years they'll be just as happy. You hear more about the bad experiences than the good and it skews the perception.
I drive a 14' ram all across the country for work. Never had an issue with it and it's got 160k on it. It's more comfortable and rides better than my tundra and gets 19 mpg with the cruise set on 81. I took my tundra to a meeting an hour and half away a couple weeks ago because the office where the ram is kept was 30 minutes the opposite direction. My ass was numb when I got there and I got 14.5 mpg with cruise on 75.
Does ram have more issues than Toyota? Absolutely, does that mean every one of them has issues? No.

Not me. I am weary of turbo reliability and longevity. My next purchase is a fuel efficient car - prob a Camry to go with my Tundra.

When those vehicles were initially released to the automotive media, FCA/Stellantis reps said something along the lines of allowing such powerful trucks to be RWD would be irresponsible. Makes sense to me, I have been caught off guard a few times in my old truck with half the power.

Subaru built their rep on awd. I don't think they even make a car w/out. Do they?? Maybe the BRZ??

Powerful RWD sports cars and sport sedans exist for a reason, and they’re much better at enthusiastic pavement shredding than a truck.

I have owned 2 late model rams, I like the trucks, the resale is abysmal...horrible...The only way I would buy a Ram truck again is if it had the capability I couldn't find anywhere else and I would go into it as a long term purchase knowing that if I do not keep it until it is on its last legs, that the resale will be horrible. If you trade trucks often, do not buy a Ram...or really any other domestic truck or vehicle. There is a generation of new buyer that is letting this inflated market lead them to believe that resale values on these vehicles are better than they are....in a few years there will be some very hurt feelings at the dealerships.

It may get so bad with people paying too much for vehicles that I can see dealerships having a catagory for them...."Hey Jim, we got another covid buyer over here, it's your turn to break the news to em"

Although the Ram is not the worst...The F150 tops all the lists...all the time, but you will see, there are some 3/4 ton trucks that do well in the resale category as far as domestics go.

It won't just be Ram or Ford. Toyota and everyone else will be in the same boat because everyone is overpaying. Isn't 10 to 15 percent off MSRP typical for a Toyota? Anyone getting anything off MSRP these days? It's rare right now. If you think cars are bad, oh boy wait until you see the boat buyers on the other end of the ownership spectrum. They'll need a mop at the door for the tears.

Have had my 2018 JL Rubicon for 3 yrs. Happy and it's been reliable.

Yeah boat buyers are really going to feel that pain. Shopping for one now and I'm just waiting on supply and prices to normalize. However if inflation keeps up, these folks may not suffer as bad as they could.

Boats are terrible. I could sell my almost 4 year old bass rig for 5k less than I paid new.
Just like with trucks it sounds like a great time to sell but when you can't find a replacement and when you do they cost 15k more than what they're worth it's pointless to try

I’ve never understood the infatuation with the price of ones vehicle/house because of this reason. If my truck is worth 5k more than what I paid then that usually means if I need to buy another truck then ill over pay buy 5k and I’ll just be in the same exact situation.Like houses right now, I could make 250k on my house but I’d have to use that towards another drastically overpriced house to be in the same position I am in now. It makes sense either if you’re downgrading like selling the truck for a car or selling a house to move cities.

The system in my LC is perfect, I'm sure I somewhat pay for it at the pump, but it's an inefficient vehicle to begin with.

My suspicion is that the Land Cruiser doesn’t give up that much in mileage to a current 4X4 Tundra. We don’t have front hubs that can be locked out, so all the front axle components are spinning merrily around creating friction losses whether the transfer case is sending them power or not.

He did a lease on his first ram, and liked it so much that he bought this one. And lease payment is super low, as long as you stay away from the loaded trucks.
I get the value of a Toyota, they are the only trucks I have never been upside down in. But I am ready for a truck that checks all the boxes. And I don't mind paying to get the features I want.

I got 15% off mine but I've been led to believe that's very abnormal. I thought Toyotas typically sold for MSRP or thereabouts.

I would pay particular attention to most common problem number 3. That one is a big ticket item.

    Bought mine in November 2019.

So yes, normally Toyotas sell for MSRP and now they're going for more. Normally domestics are the ones that sell for 10+% below MSRP so they're probably going for MSRP.

That is pretty interesting. I have yet to talk to anyone that has had issues with the 5th gen rams. I ask everyone that I see driving one, I have found that everyone knows a guy that had nothing but problems. But I like to actually ask people who own the truck. Tundras have their fair share of problems, but I have never had one or talked to anyone who has had one

My biggest gripe is payload. If the new 2022 Tundra has better payload, then I hope the 2023 Sequoia may be a good fit for me and my growing family.

Right now I don't think replacing my 19 modded with a stock 22 would be enough of an improvement to take a loss and switch.

    Couple of points:

1: I love that Toyotas sell somewhat close to MSRP. It removes a lot of negotiation.

2: I guess I could look this up but are resale comparisons between brands based on MSRP or OTD price? Toyotas are justifiably renowned for their trade-in values but if MSRP is used as the starting value (as opposed to OTD price) domestics could be at a disadvantage if their discounts from MSRP are greater.

Just curious if you or others know.

    Thanks.

My 19 is currently worth 2k more than I paid for it new. And that is trade in. But right now everything is stupid expensive
