you can’t drive around with them unscrewed. They replace your bumpstop entirely. There is a bolt sticking up from the mount when you unscrew the sumo.

however if you do need to unscrew them, no jack needed, i put one tire up on the curb and that flexes the back end enough to unscrew it with ease

to tag on to the other guys, yes they really improve stability when towing. Side to side sway is gone. When engaged, they are an airbag basically.

I don't have bumpstops at all currently. I've owned the truck for nearly 5 years and never removed the bumpstops, so I can only assume they were never there. If I do remove the Sumo Springs, I'll put a nut or something over the threads to protect them.

If the gen 1 mount is like gen 2, the bolt would break off when it hits the frame

That would suck. It'd have to be a pretty big bump to do that though wouldn't it?

Youve never bottomed out your rear suspension? Gen 1 doesn’t have a ton of space between axle and frame. You have a bump pad over your leaf spring. That is where the sumo will rest. I just had this thought, your springs are pretty old, it is possible the sumo may help support those older springs a lot

I've never bottomed it out, even with a full yard of dirt in the bed. I have no bump pads/stops at all right now. This was when I had the load of dirt, and actually when I noticed I had no bumpstops. The frame was still over an inch from the leafs. A good bump with the load would have bottomed out. With my normal loads though and even driving 40 - 50mph down rough gravel, pothole filled roads I've never bottomed out.

I'm getting new leafs the same day the Sumos go in.

Ur shocks could bottom out, not just spring against frame

Fair point. I didn't think about that.

You may not need new springs after the sumos

    Actually there's another option.
You can physically cut the Sumos to gain clearance. Lets say you want some delay before the engage the frame.
Just cut a biscuit from the top off, you won't hurt them by doing that.
This will allow your axle to function without preload until the sumo comes in contact with the frame.
    These puppies are pretty versatile.

this is true, however it turns them from a support spring into a progressive bumpstop. If you want the sag help when hauling, you have to leave them long. Bought 2 sets. One i cut 2 rings off for daily driving. They swap in 5 minutes without tools

I have a 2021 TRD off-road and I’m undecided between these and airbags. My main concern is affecting factory ride the least possible when unloaded. I know I won’t be removing the sumos when not used. Does anyone have experience with both?

Air bags give you adjustabllity which is nice. They can go a long time if you do not abuse them.
They are known to leak and get damaged if you do a lot of off roading.
Sumos are not adjustable like an air bag is by design.
Sumos can't be damaged and will last longer than any air bag. You can "modify" the Sumo by cutting "biscuits" from the top to decide when to engage the Sumo to do it's thing.
I personally run the softest units because of what I use my truck for. I have no harshness during an unloaded ride and they act like a compliant sway bar as they are set up in my Tundra.
When I load up the back with Water jugs, groceries, crap from hardware stores and even our enclosed two bike trailer that can hold two full size Harleys, I have no issues and the Tundra feels like nothing is in the back.
It's a matter of what your willing to deal with and how much variation your truck goes through in trailer-ing and trucking crap during it's life.
Me, I know how my Tundra will be used MOST of the time and I felt the Sumos were perfect for what I wanted.

I have a few buddies running airbags in Tundras and the ride quality when not loaded in most worried about. This is what most of them complain about. It’s nice that they can be adjusted for various weights. I guess there’s no magic pill for this.

definitely. No magic pills. The people ive talked to with the RAS system claim the unloaded ride is not dramatically worse. I would consider that one if i were starting over

We'll see how the ride is with full height, but I might end up going this route and ordering a second set to cut down. I didn't realize it was possible to cut them down.

A big reason I didn't go airbags is because of maintenance and temperature extremes. We'll go from -40 in winter to 100 degrees in summer here. I really didn't want to deal with freezing air lines or bags.

Just the air bags is useless tho IMO, you have to pair it with the compressor setup, so you could adjust it inside your truck. But the whole setup cost too much, if I couldn’t use it everyday.
