Buyer's remorse? No more...

Howdy. Brand new here on this forum as of yesterday. Just put money down on my first truck ever, first Toyota ever. 2021 SR5 CrewMax 2WD in black; should be delivered early Sept 2021. I'm aware of the redesign for 2022 model year.

EDIT: Ended up with SR5 4WD Red CrewMax. I'll be using a utility trailer quite a bit for a new side-business.

After reading endless comparisons of F-150 vs Tundra on vehicle review/comparison websites (post putting money down), I'm feeling like I am choosing the lesser truck. I don't need a heavy hauler, just a commute/travel truck that occasionally I can use for towing and general manly stuff like remodeling projects, hauling stuff to the dump, bringing home larger items, etc. I'm not towing an RV full time or anything remotely close to that. I don't know Tundra or F-150 owners in my area so I don't have anyone else to ask these questions.

Did I make the right choice with the Tundra purchase? Why do you think so? Will this Tundra generally be more trouble-free than a Ford? Should I have waited for the 2022 redesign considering the excellent Toyota warranties? Yes, I know this is a Tundra forum and I know I'll get roasted a little (or a lot). Bring it on. I've got thick skin.

 

What is lesser part of your research?

 

Generally speaking, the reviews I read universally say the Tundra has less comfortable seats, less tech, fewer options unless you upgrade to the higher trims, just a lot more evolution in the F-150 platform vs the Tundra platform technology wise. I was only interested in the F-150 or the Tundra. Didn't even look at Chevys or RAMs.

I didn't even bother driving a 2021 F-150 due to extreme time constraints.

 

Ah so nothing to do with the manly stuff you will be using truck for.

And obviously we are Pro-Tundra up in here.

 

I guess I am buying the truck largely based off of a great test-drive, loving the cabin, loving the look of the truck and the general reputation of the truck and the reputation of the resale value for these trucks.

After owning three F150's since 2010 I went back to a Tundra and I could not be more pleased with my decision. I value reliability and cost of ownership and resale value the most. All three of my F150's had major mechanical issues. Rear axles, backup cams, cam phasers, chain tensioners, etc. If I bought another new one I'd just be holding my breath waiting for something to go wrong. Do they have more tech...yes....but that's something that doesn't matter to me. I'd sleep easy if I were you knowing that you got one of the most reliable trucks ever made IMO.

 

So why did you create a thread doubting your decision?

If you think you will be keeping the truck for a long time there is no question to me that the Toyota is better am]nd if your not maybe it matters a little less but for me the quality of the truck speaks in every mile while I never felt that way on a Ford really.

 

Because I wanted to ask others about my decision, asking for context from existing owners who might have also owned late model F-150s in recent times, not having anyone else specifically to discuss this with that has real truck knowledge or a basis for model-to-model comparisons.

 

The only thing you should regret is ordering a truck that is not 4x4.

 

Can you afford roughly 14mpg as a "commuter" truck? That's the only question you should ask yourself. Otherwise, you made the right decision.

 

You live in Iowa, and you’re planning to buy a 2WD truck?

I assume you have another vehicle to drive during the winter?

Good feedback and context. Thank you. I highly value build quality and not being in the shop. I've got extreme time poverty so down-time is a no-go. I'm feeling better about my decision...

 

Also, this. From South Dakota here. 2WD trucks sit around unsold for months.

 

With the limited slip diff, I don't think 4WD is necessary. I work from home and if the plows haven't run through, I have no reason for travel...hardly ever.

 

Yeah I’m in South Dakota too, we have one RWD car in the fleet and it gets put away in the garage when the white stuff flies.

 

Like you said, it's a TUNDRA forum, no one is going to tell you made a mistake.

Go ask the same question on an F150 forum, everyone will tell you you made a mistake.

That said, I've owned 1 Ford and this is my 5th Toyota. I'll never buy another Ford. I've owned 1 first Gen vehicle (Mazda) and will never buy a new gen vehicle again either.

 

The limited slip on a truck with virtually no weight over the rear axle is going to be painfully bad in winter weather.

You are making a huge mistake.

 

I think you’re overestimating the benefit of an electronic LSD in a rear axle that has no weight or traction.

If for no other reason than resale value in Iowa it seems 4wd is an easy choice if you can find one.

 

I can easily afford the mpg. Just didn't think the added expense of 4WD was necessary considering I'm not running around pulling buddies out of ditches in the winter.

 

I’m kind of shocked a dealer in Iowa wouldn’t try their hardest to talk a customer out of ordering a 4X2 truck.

 

I'm listening...just don't get a ton of snow anymore. I'm not off-roading or anything remotely similar.

 

If bells and whistles were what you wanted, you may have chose wrong, I assume you test drove a tundra and saw the interior, sat in the seats. If you value reliability, resale, and the simplicity of it, you should be happy with it, now the 2wd, might have tried to push you in a different direction on that choice. Welcome to the group.

 

You made the best choice from a reliability standpoint, and if you like the cabin and the test drive, keep it worry-free. It is a bit of a head scratcher why you chose 2wd, but some winter tires and sandbags in the bed will help you out quite a bit in the winter. Enjoy your exceptionally well-built truck!

Fords don’t just have more issues because more of them are made; they have issues at a higher rate per X number of trucks built.

I trust my Tundra past its official ratings more than I trust Fords anywhere near theirs.

 

Been there and done that with both the f150s and the Tundras. The tundra is a far superior truck. It does not have all of the gimmicks of the newer domestics but Ford can’t even figure out how to seal a back window, or cab light, I’m not sure because they could never figure out which was leaking let alone fix it.

From what I am seeing with the chip shortage, had you gone with an f150 “all that”tech would be useless anyway.

Also food for thought. Tundras seem to hold up far better in crashes, god forbid, then most other trucks. I can speak to that from experience.

Plus Ford has the awful door chime noise. My Explorer from work irritates me to no end with that sound.
