Not enough return for a ½ ton truck with diesel

I guess we will just have to settle for the Toyota HD Diesel 3/4 or 1 ton that we all have created in our minds

Depends on the additional cost, average annual mileage, and how long you keep a vehicle, plus resale value if you are more prone to trading in. Then factor is maintenance costs, and ease or difficulty of maintenance.

I keep vehicles for a long time, so I may see pay off within my ownership, as long as maintenance costs don’t outweigh the fuel savings.

From Toyota’s history in this country my guess is there is a less than 5% chance we see a Tundra diesel. Much less a diesel hybrid.

That said I would be interested in one for the huge power available within the RPM range I usually spend my time driving in. Plus fuel range would be killer as long as the fuel tank wasn’t tiny.

Did you even watch the video? What facts qualify for a 5% chance? At least that video comes from an intelligent and well read Toyota blogger. This isn't wild speculation with no facts. He shares sources and puts it all out there.

¾ and 1 ton trucks need over 10 years to break even.

I base my prediction off of interviews with Mike Sweers who has not seemed overly enthusiastic about Diesel engines for the Tundra. Unless he was intentionally deceiving interviewers, I’ll take him at his word.

It’s more like any where in the world will have a diesel, except in the USA

*DISCLAIMER* this particular dream does not apply to daily drivers, DEF equipped vehicles, or those who do not want to budget for increased maintenance costs caused by emissions equipment. Essentially, this dream does not apply to US residents.

That's one way to increase the total, Is there a prize I'm not aware of? Seriously a Diesel Tundra 1/2 ton that keeps the current gearing and goes to rear springs, six lugs and likely increases payload 500ish pounds and towing capacity 10-20% will be more in than in demand, just check with all those "non-residents" looking for a baby duramax.

I am not saying that on paper it wouldn't be in demand, or that I wouldn't love a diesel. I'm saying that if you DD it on short runs you'll cause increased maintenance that makes it a costly option, and that the EPA has effectively strangled the diesels in the states. The days of million mile well kept diesels, or 3-400K mile abused ones are over. The emissions items added to them have increased cost, decreased long term fuel efficiency, and cut their feasible lifespans.

I love diesels. They are amazing things, but they are not cheap when they aren't full of EGRs and DEF. Add those in, and it's just not worth it if it's not working hard every day or making your money.

Here's some of the stuff that people don't look at when they want a diesel. I didn't either when I bought mine, and I learned that I didn't need a diesel so it wasn't a justifiable expense for me.

There’s no way in hell that Toyota will put out a diesel 1/2 ton Tundra in the US.

Keeping everything I've read from others with more experience in mind, I stopped watching after hearing two "make sure you subscribe" statements in less than 50 seconds. Have come to see things like this as click bait - especially when it's all speculation for now.

Couldn't resist back-to-back posts, had to get two more?

I am aware of costs and maintenance associated with Diesel. Operating costs and maintenance are not my concern. Truth be told, neither is reliability, although it is appreciated. Range is my number one concern. Fitting in my garage is 2nd, I like to work on things myself.

Came very close to pulling trigger on AT4 baby Duramx or 6.2L back in January, even though I hate GM. Would've done the 6.2 except for the 24 gallon fuel tank - no range. Baby Duramax just didn't excite me enough and even though it would've increased my payload about 300ish lbs, just din't love 3,800lbs rear axle. Did I mention that I hate GM. Almost pulled trigger on F350 Tremor, but didn't want the hassle of parking it, and it won't fit in my garage.

Given Toyota's track record with diesels, even with associated DEF costs and maintenance, if they offer a Diesel this December, I will be a 2022 Tundra drivin mo'fo.

Solid logic, and I follow. Were I in the market for a truck again and Toyota did a diesel, no lie, I'd be super tempted. Don't know how that one would shake out, honestly.

As far as posts, nah, idc about post counts and such. I just respond and interact as it suits me.

    So you are saying it'll be a 3/4 ton.

I would have said this too, but have to believe they are putting out a diesel something. Why else explain diesels at Toyota USA?

I would LOVE for them to get into the HD truck game. Even if they did it with a gasser.

I watched the video and it seemed like a really basic "now you know" kind of format. There wasn't anything specific enough for me to get up hopes that they'll be doing a diesel. Also, if they were to do a diesel, it wouldn't have to be a truck. It could be a little diesel in a prius or yaris. Not sure, but I think cars can get by a lot of the EPA diesel horse puckey because of their inherently more efficient package when compared to trucks/SUVs.

I’m with you on range being a big benefit to diesel. I work on call 24/7, and when my working boards are spinning hard I get to the home terminal and head home to get done what I can and then sleep because 10 hours later that phone is ringing and I’m back out. So less trips to the gas station = more stuff I can get done or a few more minutes of sleep. Over the course of a month it can add up.

I do mostly highway miles, and round trip is 48 miles so the engine always has time to reach operating temp and burn off condensation and other gack out of the EGR.

The biggest concerns I would have with a Toyota diesel are the emissions equipment, and general serviceability by the end user. An engine bay that is cramped and hard to work in would be a deal breaker on a diesel that needs frequent fuel filter replacement for example.

As much as I trust Toyota to get a first model year right, I would probably wait a year minimum if they bring a diesel. Let everything shake out that first year, let suckers pay the scalpers prices, and then make an educated decision.

IF they do it, that sure is a BIG IF, the front end of that vessel looks plenty big enough for a diesel. I too would generally wait until the 2023 or 24 model, and let all those suckers go first. But if it is a diesel cranking out 700lb-ft, I'll change my handle to Uno, because I'll be sucker number one. A man has got to have a dream.

Agree, but why release this, and why do it now, it's not as though you can't find plenty of youtube video explaining IC engines and differences between gasoline and diesel.

This is true, and I find it curious as well. I'm just too much of a cynic to get excited about it. Especially because there have been numerous times that the rumor mill and hype train have had similarly compelling arguments over the last decade. Believe me, I hope your dream comes true on this. It'd be epic, but I'll believe a Toyota diesel in the States when I see it; not before.

Not to be abrasive but based on your logic, it makes no sense to even respond to me to say you didn't watch the video, lol.

A guy selling clicks and asking for more clicks isn't crazy. 99% of YT vids run that format.

It is conjecture but based on some solid facts and a decent watch if you care about this sorta stuff.
