Heaviest Tundra?

All this talk of payload and seeing my own truck being overweight with such meager gear in the bed has got me kind of hyper-focused on the issue. I came across this rig, owned by a couple of freelance designers who go by Bound For Nowhere and spend very long stretches of time overlanding. They’ve had the truck for a couple years now with no issues. They said in a walkthrough video it weighs 9k lbs. Sweet rig, but should they have gone with a different truck?

 

This thread needs a corollary thread for lightest Tundra, or best ways to reduce curb weight and increase payload

 

There was a guy on Wander the West with pretty much the same setup. He adamantly defended the Tundra's frame/drivetrain as being more then capable of handling the load. That said, I have a Granby in my DCLB.

 

You’d think they’d have issues with the rear axle on the Tundra with all that weight.

You could…
-go with lighter wheels,
-stick with stock tires or even go skinnier (255/70?),
-remove your backseat (not me; I have kids),
-remove your tailgate,
-replace the steel wheel on the spare with a 5th lighter wheel (or lose the spare altogether),
-lose the chrome bumper caps for plastic,
-buy fiberglass fenders (might look goofy w/out LT),
-downsize from the 38gal tank to the 26.4gal tank,
-remove tow hitch,
-remove glove box door, console lid, floor mats, carpet, speakers haha

 

what's the MPG on that??? 5???

Also, kids…could maybe lose the smaller of the two (rear seats, not kids ) but then I’d want to put a fridge or something in that spot

Don’t know how I feel about that. Seems almost as silly as trading in my 37s

Again, RW wheel is my spare. Probably could get away with not carrying a spare at all unless I’m on a trip though. That would save me about 100lbs.

RW front bumper is all plastic, so can’t do that one.

I like the way you think! Would be a good first step toward convincing the wife I need to just go ahead and go LT

This i could actually do. I think I’ve only ever used mine a couple times in four years of ownership of the truck.

Some other ideas…
Remove sway bars, which I’ve done
Remove front skid, not smart if you plan on wheeling or crawling though
Remove box in favor of flat bed? Not sure of the weight savings there
Swap out captains chairs up front for light weight racing seats
Leave the wiper fluid reservoir empty and clean windshield at fill ups…now I’m just getting nitpicky
Only ever fill the gas tank half full
Dump the exhaust just past the muffler
Cut off the spare tire guides and remove the hoist mechanism that holds the spare in place

Wheel bearing assemblies are cheaper than the price difference for a heavy duty truck.

And that 3500 has a long bed. Going through trails with something that heavy and that long has to be miserable. I get annoyed sometimes in tight parking lots and I don’t even have a long bed

 

Can’t find it now, but there was a thread on here where a guy was documenting weight reduction and how much each part weighed, even down to the antenna and engine cover. I think he was racing his truck or something.

Back on topic, mine weighed about 6800 lbs last time I checked it. I have a fabfours front bumper with winch, ARE cap, decked full of stuff and ~35” duratracs.

 

Does anyone make a carbon fiber replacement bull bar bumper? I’d love an ARB but damn they look heavy.

 

When I was shopping around for the four wheel camper currently on my truck, I was at a dealer for these campers and when I asked them about the flatbed model for a tundra and more specifically these people, all he said was "poor poor tundra....". He's a toyota guy himself so even with that bias he doesn't recommend it.

 

Not at all! Anything related to our giant fat trucks, how little payload they have to carry people or other stuff, or what to delete/swap to save weight is great.

Makes me wonder if the BFN folks had any trouble finding someone willing to put a flatbed on their Tundra for their FWC.

A different truck? In my opinion, not necessarily. If me, I would just have a small high clearance trailer, maybe even a Tundra bed on it with a retrax tonneau to put all the heavy gear, water, clothes, etc. That could set em back 5 grand in build cost, but also probably drop 1500 lbs or so off the truck plus make it easier to set up and tear down camp. Also nice to have a spot saver to leave behind in many instances. So for me, keep the truck, add a trailer, enjoy the campfire!

 

Ha! I am impressed with myself that I thought of a few of the same things Viktor did just off the top of my head, like the wiper fluid, spare tire carrier, and sway bar I actually thought of standard mirrors vs tow mirrors but thought it would be a wash. I almost cried when I saw the inside of his box though His video is the first I have heard of someone REMOVING springs from the rear leafs lol. I am curious about the parking brake thing though...I get that it's allowed by NHRA, but his whole thing is that his Tundra is daily-driven, so...wouldn't you still want it?

 

I really need to weigh mine...I know for a fact I'm carrying around a bunch of weight over stock with my big tires, cap, sliders, and rear underseat storage boxes. I save 20lbs on the sway bar, though!
