What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

You may want to take that one to Turtle Wax and make them barf up some recompense. They clearly claim in no loose terms this specific product is paint-safe.

OEM double-sided trim tape has a penchant for sticking so firmly it'll break the bond between top and basecoat on paint if you don't apply extreme heat and work slowly, in small sections to take trim off without prying. Sometimes it happens anyway, the tuff is so stout. Without seeing how you removed it, or what the paint removed looked like, I can't say if that's what happened.

My neighbor had the same issue with his Tahoe. Offered to loan him my heat gun and plastic razors but was convinced a blow dryer and muscle would do it. The second he hit it with his preferred remover (Goof Off), the second the adhesive broke free, the paint broke free with it, along with a slurry of oxidized paint dust.

 

Crap. No wonder it's not the same since I came back.

Tundra trailers really need to be areo. It seems to me like the cruise tune gets overwhelmed easily. And you have to constantly feather to keep it locked up. Its doable, just exhausting.
It might help to hack one of those speedometer correctors, but program it for 5:1 gearing or whatever, make its shift speeds happen later while towing. I feel im onto something here.

 

I kinda wondered why, when I was looking up any tricks to pop off the front corner lights, PHM's name had a line through it. Was hoping maybe he got promoted to moderator or something

Oh, and on that corner lamp disassembly. In case anyone specifically finds this reply looking for that info on the corner lamps, my Chilton's manual had the best advice I found after looking at about 10 videos (incl. A1 Auto): "After removing the plastic fastener on the housing's tab, strike the light fixture with your palm in a forward motion".

Worked like a champ to release the clamp holding it to the main headlight fixture. The motion is almost like a rub-slap or something. I found it easiest to stand next to the front wheel, leaning over the fender and palming the corner lamp housing forward. Will need to do it again later when I eventually polish out all the nooks, crannies, and engine bay.

 

Got a misfire in cylinder 8 this morning, turn out to be a bad coil. I changed out the coils and sparkplugs about 6 months ago (161K did it because the originals were cracked and the boots were bad). I am at 167K today. I tossed an old Denso Toyota pug in there and CEL went away.

Autozone Duralast: Replacement Issue
I went with Duralast brand coils when I replaced all of them. I didn't know any better at the time. All 8 coils came to about $400+ and they came with a lifetime warranty so it felt like a smart buy. The issue is one of the new coils just went bad after 6K miles, and you need to bring them all in for the warently to replace just one bad.

Denso Coils OEM fit?
I just ordered Denso Coils from Amazon Part number 673-1303 $50+ each, thats the part number I got off of the Denso website. Amazon only lets you order 6 max per order or day. I did some cross-referencing and read different threads and looks like they are the same or close enough to the ones that the dealer offers Part Number

$103 90080-19027 Toyota Genuine Ignition Coil

90080-19027. My originals are even branded as Desno (see photo). Once I get all the Desno ones in I will return the Durlast ones for a cash refund or store credit.

I will also be adding an old OEM coil to my truck tool bag.

I remember when that was a lot of moola back then when I bought mine. I only regret I didn’t buy two of them when compared to today’s prices!

 

Why I don’t like driving on the freeway; got two rock chips within 3 miles of getting on! I’m sure they will spread, both right at the brow line(forgot the technical term) but the only silver lining might be; the window had been 3m clear tinted, but in early morning light I could see either dirt or sandblasted glass. So all of that should be good with new glass. And I’ll ask to see if there’s any rust that I need to mitigate while it’s out

 

Not sure on your insurance but mine will cover the cost of getting chips repaired for free.

 

So one was a chip that already spidered out 1/4” in each direction, and the other one immediately turned into a 5” crack, but I’ll call tomorrow regardless.
The place I’ll take it too is pretty cool. I had them hide some power wires in the 4runner molding while they had it all out, for roof rack lights. No problem and they did a good job for the instructions given

 

Good opportunity to remove the headliner and install sound deadening.

 

Does the window need to be out to do this? Or it’s just easier? It wouldn’t be a bad idea to put some cardboard boxes up there for insulation(channeling my inner hand model)

 

I believe the headliner is installed through the front to avoid bending it. At least I’ve read that somewhere. Maybe an access cab with suicide doors has enough diagonal with the seats out though.

 

They may be able to. Safelite says they can fill anything up to 6".

They've done pretty large chips for me in the past with good results.

 

You could just roll down the rear window...if you had the superior DC

yep, I'm sure. Even the Uhaul computer approved my truck.
Towed like crap empty, full up it towed MUCH better.
Oddly, truck seemed to be running happier today. Maybe some internal crap freed up & passed.

 

Yeah, that's why I said I would test it in an inconspicuous place first because they are aggressive and could make a bad situation even worse.

 

I had the same experience towing my friends new to him Cherokee earlier this year. I think it's a matter of throttle %. The trans couldnt seem to make up its own mind when I was pulling this trailer empty, but it towed the jeep like butter.

I finally took the time to replace the rear shocks on my 03 AC, huge difference, old ones were completely shot. Kind of feel like an idiot for not replacing them a long time ago.

I was being sarcastic though. I plan on towing an enclosed tool trailer with mine. Good to hear it's running well whatever the reason. Maybe it got something akin to an Italian tune-up. lol
