2022 Tundra

It's possible I guess, but it's also possible you stick it in reverse instead of drive and back into the car behind you. I can see more benefit to it than possible negatives.

 

Interesting, I have not seen any chevys in my area with that tailgate only GMCs.

It was exclusive to GMC for the first year or two then it trickled down to Chevy.

So, I’ve been lurking in this thread since like page 30. Lots of good discussions going on about the new gen Tundra and a lot of “other discussions”. I’ve had two Tacomas and one Tundra since 2005. They have been great with only a couple issues here and there.

Something I haven’t seen discussed yet. Do any of you know how much lifting and putting larger tires will affect a hybrid/PHEV system? I have reserved both a Hybrid Tundra with at least a Limited trim and a Ford Lightning from my local dealerships and am curious if I will be able to mod my new truck like I have done to all my others.

Do you think modifications to an electrified suspension and drive system will cause issues?

 

I think that is quite possible, aren't some of the hybrid systems tied to the wheels...if that is the case, aftermarket wheels might be an issue. I would imagine any mod that puts more weight (bigger tires etc) on the system will diminish performance/efficiency like it does on a gas powered vehicle. I am going to guess that mods will be a little different with a hybrid or full electric vehicle.

 

If this thread was limited to the new Tundra it would be 5 pages instead of 325. It's just a bunch of guessing and wishing at this point.

 

It might follow the Hino trucks hybrid system. So you have your gas engine, followed by the motor/generator, transfer case if 4x4, and then, transmission.

 

When I sold my 19' 3klbs dry Micro Minnie a 2017 Ridgeline AWD hauled it away fine. Me and my neighbor were impressed how little the rear end squatted (no WDH). We test drove a 2016 but stayed with the '07 Runner V8. Lot of likeable things to it, can forklift a 48"W pallet into the bed, can't do that with other mid-sizes. 1500lbs payload is impressive.

 

In response to the argument that the majority of Tundra owners sell these trucks after a few yrs, and the reliability isn't for the first owner....

The Tundra and Sequoia are the only full size truck and full size SUV to make the top 10. Furthermore, Toyota has 7 of the top 10 spots and all of the top 5.

 

So I was just futzing around looking at the Carista settings; this is actually something you can program into your truck using their dongle/app. I plan on doing exactly this today plus some other settings.

 

Wow. I'm very surprised to see the Sienna on that or any other good list. I had an 05 - worst piece of garbage I've ever owned. I had the AWD one though and I'm sure that had a lot to do with it.

 

So essentially 1/10 owners at the 15 year mark of ownership. While impressive, that is still leaving a lot of guys and gals who do not keep their Toyota (or any other vehicles for that long).

The list did forget Land Cruiser owners, I suspect they would actually hold a spot in the top 5.

 

No one who actually knows can tell us yet. We can make educated guesses though. If the Tundra hybrid uses wheel mounted electric motors aftermarket wheels are going to be challenging at best. Doubtful that will be the case, probably instead Toyota will mount an electric motor between the internal combustion engine (prime mover) and the transmission, eliminating the torque converter. Depending on the transmission bell housing, size of the electric motor, whether Toyota uses the same bell housing size and length for non hybrid and hybrid…. etc etc there may be extra challenges in doing a lift.

For example it is not tough to imagine that the new 10 speed auto is probably a big long hunk of metal, then you have a transfer case behind that, so the angle the driveshaft will need to operate at with a significant lift over stock is potentially going to stress U joints quite a bit already, now say the electric motor adds another 6” in length? Now that geometry from the transfer case to the axles is even more unforgiving.

 

Obviously this is sheer assumption but Toyota may bring a hybrid Tundra to market that will be more advanced than we think. Toyota has to know the alleged number one complaint is MPG’s…so why not introduce a true fuel efficient full-size and not worry about the aftermarket segment? There maybe a non-hybrid that will allow for a lift and bigger tires…who knows really. It’s a double edge sword…want advanced technology to get 25 mpg’s or the ability to modify? This may very well be the next generation of Tundras become. Consumers cannot have it both ways on a 5k + truck.

 

They may do just that. If I were in the position of product development at a major auto manufacturer aftermarket ability to modify or change the product would be somewhere down on the priorities list below offering solid gold toilet seats as an option.

 

15 years seems like a long time to me. It is a significant amount of a persons driving life. I have had my 2001 Tundra for over 20 years and honestly I have been trying to kill it for at least 5 years. I get the oil changed once or twice a year and do minimal maintenance. I have been wanting to get a new once for a few years but I have not been sold by the aesthetics of the current model but I am interested in the 2022.

I believe a lot has been put on paper about this truck and if the design is not completed it is very close to being so.

 

The more I look at the exterior shots of the 2022 Tundra the more its growing on me. Interior we need more details but I'm pumped that we still got that rear sliding window as that's going to be my "Check this out" feature ahaha
