...and what about the Chevrolet Avalanche, the Cadillac Escalade EXT and the Honda thing?

Distant memory...but there's the Lincoln Mark LT(til 2014 in Mexico) and Blackwood(2002 only). In 2020 there was some talk about a revived Lincoln Mark LT.........coincidentally with a 3.5 TT V-6 producing 450 h.p./510 ft. lbs. with a 10-sp auto. That sounds familiar.

Well the Honda Ridgeline is the only one still in production, and what a fine truck it is. Realistically for the vast majority of us who spend 99% of our miles not towing, hauling, or driving off road the Ridgeline is probably more logical than a Tundra.

I just saw a Chevy commercial about a fancy new tailgate that has a remote open, like the doors. I asked my wife if that is easier than just pulling a latch. She said it would be nice if you just had your fingernails done.

New GM tailgate had me puzzled for a bit - needed it open to grab some supplies. Kept trying to pull on a latch that doesn't exist. Took me about 15 seconds to realize it is operated by a button, not a latch

Until a week or so ago I completely discounted a Ridgeline as anything remotely possible. The uni-body thing completely turned me off for no logical reason other than it wasn't like all the other trucks. And previous to this generation they were butt ugly imo. Upon further review a Ridgeline would suit my needs quite well. Every truck is a compromise but what the Ridgeline offers is an interesting package. I'd have to keep the Dodge for pulling the Airstream but I'm a bit fond of that beast anyway so that wouldn't hurt my feelings.

The Honda Ridgeline is an SUV with a truck box on the back. Don't get me wrong it is an incredibly good SUV. We have a Honda Pilot which is awesome and to be honest if you don't really need the truck box on a regular basis or to tow anything the Ridgeline is a decent SUV/Truck.

While not heavy duty, the Ridgeline can tow just fine. Towed a cargo trailer with a good bit of weight > 100k miles all over the country with no problems at all.

The chevy I bought has that, its more useful than you think it would be, and only works while the vehicle is in park.

I can remote operate the tailgate down or up 4 ways, due to the trim level of the truck, but all chevys can remote lower the tailgate.

From inside the cab with the press of a button,

    From the remote key fob

Simply by touching the tailgate where the handle would be, to raise the same way or simply lift it about 4 inches and hold for a second

and by a app on my phone.

I used to feel that way until GMC changed my mind. Dropping off the broken vehicle, waiting for a shuttle, or Uber, or inconveniencing someone to get me back to work while they make a repair then having to get a ride back to the dealer when they are done has a lot of cost associated with it over and above parts and labor. I find it more economical to buy the parts have them shipped to my house and fix it on my time. Also, I almost never break additional things unlike a certain service department.

In addition there’s costs associated with perceived unreliability. IE. resale value is correlated positively with reliability. Interestingly reliability is a pretty subjective term and most people filling out the surveys consider poorly designed glitchy. Infotainment systems to be part of the “reliability of the vehicle”. Traditionally, however, this metric was more for being stranded and in the intermediary time frame became broken window motors and the like.

At this point in life I am all for not having to worry about overwrought engineering decisions made by marketing types. I don’t know when I turned into a curmudgeon but there you have it.

Also, to clarify, I’m not trying to be shitty. I am pleased that you like it. Also, I think it’s neat but personally I see too many downsides and tend to stick with the engineers mantra of KISS. The creative artsy part of me that died years ago probably would have loved it.

no issue here with you or your experiences. Sometimes auto makers get it right sometimes they don’t.
my experiences with Toyota for the most part were good. Towards the end not so. Not related to the vehicle as much as the attitude on the dealer level.

my sales contract with Chevy includes a loaner vehicle in case of warranty work same as I expected from Toyota

Yes I am enjoying my new truck. Are there differences yup and in a month or so I plan to start a comparison thread on what I like and don’t like.

Agreed, I don't understand why we even need this as truck owners. Is a real handle that bad? I like gm trucks but my two biggest gripes with the current offerings is the lack of a tailgate handle and the mirrors being lower on the doors.

If you want to sell a lot of stuff you have to market to women in our society. I saw the functionality of sailboat get destroyed by marketing to women. Gradually the product went from safe, rugged, functional to floating condos that were ill suited to leave the dock. Most products develop in that general direction.

It's all good, I was just trying to envision a scenario when I would appreciate the feature and having a difficult time. The wife had no problem tho.

I used to give her a hard time about back up cameras, BSM, and push button start. "Can't you simply turn your head and look?" Lol

I really miss the PBS that was on my Tacoma and appreciate the auto door locks on her Lexus.

True, but a pickup gate handle is more exposed to the elements in addition to being used a lot rougher. I am gentle when using my wife’s Highlander gate button than I am with my Tundra. Typically CUV’s and SUV’s have some type of rear spoiler to keep water and other such elements away. I have had and seen many jammed pickup tailgates. I personally don’t want any electronics there simply because it’s a likely failure point.

The push button start is actually taking me awhile to get used to. I cant count how many times I go to get out of the truck and have to pause as I reach for the ignition and keys LOL...

One thing about the chevy is I have both mirrors set to angle down when the truck is in reverse, then back up to where I have them set when in drive, thats a feature I really like.

BSM is pretty cool as well. I dont rely on it solely but it is a nice safety feature.

so, for the scenario I’m at a parking lot and I’m pulled into a parking spot with the front toward the lane exit. I accidentally hit the tailgate open on the fob, the tailgate opens and hits the vehicle that parks behind me. Is that a real possibility?

The Tundra Ridgeline (crewmax) is the best of both worlds and way more capable than the Honda. An I'm sorry the Honda Ridgeline is a minivan and can't even make it up a hill without the transmission overheating. I do agree that if you are only buying groceries than it does get better mileage, but it's not reliable. For instance...

That's what I did. Practically drove it from the dealer to the tire store. Traded in the stock passenger car tires for E rated truck tires.

No you have to hit it twice and hold, doubtful that would happen.

The button in the truck is where you have to reach for it and press it, not something I dont see you accidently hitting.

it appears he was not on a hill either, or I missed that part. The Kia Seltos will overheat goi g up a hill, but it’s a real hill, you also have the feature of burning transmission fluid.
