What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

Added some schtuff to the Tundra I been meaning to do. Somehow, I have the weekend off, and I'm taking advantage of it.

Think I overfiled the Trans a little bit after my spillage, but will remedy that this evening. It's time for bed.

 

I finally got around to cleaning my throttle body today ('04 2UZ). I have no pics to share (you've all seen a throttle body, and there are plenty of YouTube videos available). Very easy to do: 1. Remove all the stuff that's in the way 2. Disconnect/remover the coolant and vacuum hoses 3. Remove 4 bolts (actually 2 bolts and 2 nuts) and pull it off. I cleaned it slowly and methodically (it was VERY dirty!) with Throttle Body Cleaner, and put it all back together again (using a new gasket, of course). Easy peasy...

So then I had 3 new problems

1. High Idle - After starting up the idle kicked up to ~ 1900 RPM, and then settled down to ~ 1600 RPM. Normal for me has been ~ 1100 when cold, then ~800. I checked with my spiritual advisor Google who told me to check for an obvious mistake (missing vacuum hose, for example) and then chill out...the ECU would figure it out eventually, and set everything back to normal. True that! It took a day or so of normal starts/stops, and driving around 'til now it's back to normal!

2. Coolant Hose Leak - No doubt I was the first person to un-clamp and remove these hoses since it left the factory 17 years ago. Although I tried to put it all back as I found it, there's now an annoying drip from one of the hoses <sigh>. Fine...I'll order up new hoses and clamps (as soon as I can find all the p/n's) and make it all new soon enough.

3. P0420 - Riding around today I threw this code for the first time ever. I'm thinking that the ECU is still adapting, trying to figure out what to do about all this extra air it's getting through the shiny clean throttle body. I'll keep an eye on things for the next few days to see what else jumps up.

I had planned to get a new MAF, and ultimately new O2 sensors all around sooner or later. Perhaps it may be sooner. Film at 11:00...

 

Did you unplug the battery so it resets the ecu to relearn all your new mojo?

 

Remedy for Trans overfill from this morning. Quick splash, and touchy fill in the evening sun.

I was invited to a bonfire tonight. Ill miss the sunset there obviously. I'll be attending after I shower my work/home funk off once the trans is full to my liking.

Kinda weird that someone would invite me to any kind of function, but maybe that means my luck is turning around!

I've seen roll-up Tonneau covers on this site, and IRL. I finally found an extra $150 and pulled the trigger. I used this vendor from fleabay (I think someone else here did so as well, bringing it to my attention), but there are many others offering more or less the same thing.

I love it!! It was a bit fiddly to install, but I made it work and didn't even have to do it twice!

 

A roll-n-lock would be even better. (think locking roll up garage door with vinyl covering) I wish I could find one used in my area. Way too pricey new.

Channeling the ghost of PHM, the first thing I did after install was apply a generous coating of 303.

 

"Ghost of PHM"? Uh oh, what'd I miss while I was off diddling around the last couple months?

At 70,508 I did a Seafoam oil cleanout. Followed up at 70,617 with fully syn Mobil1 Extended Performance 5w30 and OEM filter.



And as of an hour ago, I have a pair of 70k mile OEM headlight assemblies to post over in the For Sale forum, after swapping in new OEM assemblies. Original had fine cracks in the plastic or I'd have just polished and clear'd again.

Before/afters for comparison.

Sucks to hear about PHM. Not sure if I recall Rexy so much, only by name. With Roman's Cool Springs Toyota storefront being offline at the time, I ended up going with Serra Toyota of Decatur in Alabama. They typically run about 5% higher than Cool Springs, but they were having a 10-15% off weekend sale in late March, with free shipping, so I bought two headlight assemblies, two replacement driver/passenger door handles because I'm vain enough the faded stickers piss me off, and a pile of misc bolts and washers at $450 shipped. Saved around $100 with no tax, free ship, and discount.

 

That’s not to bad at all with all the other extras on there. I’ll take a pic later, but I really need to replace the window molding, I’ll have to keep an eye out for sales and deals!

I’m usually the grill master for work BBQs, this week will be a special one because it’s a retirement party so I’m pulling out all the stops and bringing my smoker to work to do 3 racks of ribs and whatever anyone wants thrown on there. One rack I’m doing a tajin based rub and sauce; it should be interesting/different!

 

I can't keep track of who is running sales or when, so I keep a couple of regional SE USA dealerships bookmarked and check once a month and/or around major national holidays because most of them are running deals then. I lucked out with the free shipping, it was really a killer deal.

The better light housings on AMZN seem to be running around $250-300/pr before fees & tax, staying OEM came in ~$100 more, and I just got a cash bonus from a friend helping wire up his brewery to help pay for it. My local dealership in Morrow GA typically has good pricing, but their two housings alone on local pickup with tax and fees was ~$275/ea versus the $223/ea I paid at Serra. I honestly think if Toyota could get their part price in the $170-190/ea range on these headlight assemblies, they'd be flying out the door!

On the BBQ front, here's the butt I tossed in the smoker on Independence Day. 7h45m hovering around 285° with pecan from a tree a storm took down last year. Bone slid clean out, killer bark. Dropping my rub recipe below the pics if I haven't already posted it. I buy my smoked paprika in bulk, search Google for:

shifty BBQ rub - combine & mix well (makes enough for 2-4 butts):

3 TBSP smoked paprika
2 TBSP brown sugar
2 TBSP kosher salt (half this if using table salt)
1 TBSP onion powder
½ TBSP garlic powder
1 tsp black pepper
1 tsp dried parsley

Optional: Sometimes I'll toss in a couple tsp of random seasoning blends, like Merkén, Montreal Steak, Caribbean Jerk, whatever. Just to switch it up. Anything with mild ground chili, cumin, coriander seems to mesh really well. Sometimes I'll just toss in cumin alone, I'm a little bit of a cumin junkie.

Editing this just to say, if you don't already know this, mixing brown sugar and salt with smoked paprika creates a bbq flavor on its own. Makes for a great rub to put on shrimp especially, just mix it with some olive oil to create a paste to rub all over them. Add cayenne for some kick, onion and garlic powders to round out the flavor ... and you can get wild by just tacking onto those three simple ingredients. Never buy rubs from the store!! It's too easy to make something better on your own!

 

I just ordered a set of Sumo Springs. Hopefully they'll arrive in time for my mechanic to install them when he does my leaf springs.

 

Sold her in 2010 with 92k miles. Bought her back today with $158k miles. Excited for the next chapter.

Is that locking fuel door stock?

I was thinking about adding either an in-cab popping door or a locking door many moons ago, but totally forgot to look whether Toyota offered anything OEM or not. I figured they would've used an interior-released door on the Sequoia that could be adapted to the Tundra, maybe I need to rehash this topic.

Congrats on getting your truck back! Looks like it may need a good polish. Mine looked a lot like yours (link below in signature) before I spent a few hours polishing it up.

Yeah, locking door was on at time of purchase. Looks a little mangled right now. She needs some TLC for sure. Full analysis tbd but I couldn’t ask for anything better from 11 years of use.

 

It’s been raining here in the devils armpit for the last week, so I’ve been able to see some water intrusion inside my camper shell. None of it appears to be coming from the windows(even the one I recently installed. It all seems to be coming from the front edge inside the bed. It’s not wet really at all along the bottom of the front pass thru window. It’s all wet on the lowest edge of the shell tub which has tracked more than halfway back. The only thing I can think of, is it’s tracking/wicking from the front edge over/under/or around the double bulb seal and then hitting the top edge of the rolled down tub and wicking into all the carpet. I’m thinking about jamming that stuff………… backer rod! Along that front edge to see if that seals/helps. Thankfully/unfortunately it doesn’t rain here very often, so it might be hard to see if my theory is correct.

I'm about ready to order the HD leafs from ATS but still trying to figure out if I need other parts, should I keep my stock bumps or upgrade, or airbags, yada yada yada
