Getting installed right this minute

I had a 2 year wait, from first seeing a Vagabond Drifter, until today, when I could buy a Tundra and Summit topper.

Here is the very last pic of my naked Tundra.


And the first pic of my Summit topper.



I will fill this thread full of pics for everyone.

It has been frustrating for me, shopping for 2 years and not able to find much video on the net, from other owners.

So I hope to help others out, by getting pics and vids out to those looking for info.

Sunflare CIGS solar panel.

Custom designed for this exact topper.

All sections of this panel are wired to operate independently. So shade on part of that panel will not effect parts still in the sunshine.

This is my $2500 Truma furnace. Can't wait to camp at elevation in the cold weather.

How is the wiring run for the solar panel?

 

On the underneath side of the solar panel, was a wire bundle.

They drilled a hole in the top of the roof, and put the wires down through that.

No wires visible anywhere on the outside

Please explain the awesomeness that makes it a $2,500 furnace.

It has a digital thermostat, similar to what would be in a house.

Just dial you the specific temperature you desire, and walk away.

It has 4 fan speeds, one is silent, for sleeping.

BTU output is 4,500, 9K and 11K. Much more than I need, but plenty to keep it toasty, if I'm cooking outside with the tailgate wide open and my wife needs to be warm.

My wife is 107 lbs soaking wet. She is always cold. So I needed the ability to get and stay comfy warm.

All the "heater" options put condensation inside my topper. This is a furnace with a heat exchanger, and all condensation is properly vented outside. Zero moisture inside, other than my breath.

So basically, we can go to high elevation or even snow camping, and absolutely roast the daylights out of the topper, at will, no questions. My motto is overkill is just right!

Instant heat, more than I could ever actually need, and zero moisture.

We spent $4K on motels last year. Every night I sleep in this, especially in cold weather, helps me recover the $2,500 that the furnace cost me.

I almost fainted when I saw the price, but spreading that over 10 years and counting the cost I motel rooms made me believe that it's worth it.

I'll use the topper this coming weekend, and most likely the furnace. I'll report back.

Need updates!!!

 

I'm exhausted. Been chasing grandchildren all weekend.

We are in the middle of our first annual family campout, in my backyard.

We have my adult children and grandkids here, and my brother-in-law and their 3 children as well.


Last night was our first night in the summit.

It's a bit smaller than I imagined it, but very comfy. I slept very well.

We are using 2 Wiggy's Desert sleeping bags, zipped up double, as they are about the perfect size for the 48x80" bed. The mattress is only 2.5" thick, but is firm enough, and we both found it very comfortable.

The vent/fan was perfect. My grandson was crying at bedtime, so I turned that fav on high and put in the earplugs. Fell right to sleep. Kept the fan on until 4am. My battery was at 12.9V when I went to sleep. At 4am the fan had drawn the battery down to 12.8V. I was happy I could run the fan for 6 hours and barely notice the drain.

It didn't get cold enough to really need the furnace, but I turned it on, and set it to 64° to get it to turn on, just to try it.

I set the fan to sleep mode, and it was very quiet. I am really pleased with the furnace.

We are sleeping here again tonight, and leaving for the Oregon coast tomorrow for 2 nights. I will definitely get more pics then.

We are going to the coast tomorrow, and will post pics.

We are planning on a 5 week long trip, starting on a month from now, so we are trying to get accustom to living in this thing.

wow! 5 weeks!!! One day I’ll get to that but with 3 kids ranging from 4-10 years old ain’t gonna happen lol. I’m in the process of my build. My tent should be arriving this week.

Just got home Tuesday.

I'm back to work today, but will try and give details.

Here are the stats from our trip.

Gone 33 days, 32 nights.

Drove 6,324 miles, through 9 states. Spent about $1,600 in fuel, or 25¢ per mile.

Running 91 grade fuel proved much better with the tundra. I was able to go 40 miles further on a tank.

1 bed and breakfast
8 hotels
23 nights in our new pickup topper.

Had loads of fun and met lots of nice people

Not one negative interaction the entire time

Wore my 357 openly on my hip about half of the trip.

Ate wonderful food as often as I desire.

Gained 8.5 Pounds

Glad to be home.

We did have water pour into the truck bed during a strong thunder storm in South Dakota.

Turned out, there is a gap in the truck bed, up front, at the top. Right where the side and front of the truck bed meet.

I used 2 part epoxy putty to seal the gap. Worked perfect.

No other problems.

Really enjoyed the summit topper.

5 miles South of Canadian border, on highway 61 in Minnesota.

The furnace was absolutely amazing.

Just set the thermostat and walk away. Constant temps inside, all night.

And loads of heat available when cooking with the tail gate down!

Interesting, I noticed that in those corners it looks like AT put a bit of silicone, but I'll go check it again. I've only washed my truck once since the topper went on and noticed just a bit of water intrusion along the bed rails, presumably from the seal they lay down not quite being able to withstand my pressure washer. I've been in rain with it a few times and haven't noticed anything come in

 

My wife was shining a flashlight from the outside.

There is a gap 1.5 inches tall in each corner of the tundra bed(2021)


I am certain that the epoxy putty is all I needed to seal it permanently.

Nope

We have 28 nights in the topper now, so I don't honestly remember that location.

I have traveled down through gold beach, but that was before I bought the topper.


The furnace is a must!

Just had a question on the mounting. I know my Tundra has tracks around the interior of the bed that my snug top is attached to. How is the Summit attached? I am sure traditional camper clamps will not work with the tracks. If you can let me know that would be great, I am looking at a used one and not sure how to attach it.
