I beg to differ. I know a lot of local contractors running around in lariat, king ranch, Denali and Ltz. All work trucks. Maybe it’s just my area ??

This is not brand dependent, I saw a nice army TRD Pro being used by a landscaper in Newport Coast, CA this spring. Rakes and shovels etc in the back.

If they're driving an upper trim in my area they're owners or foreman. 99% of the workers are driving 15 year old base models

In some places there are tax implications for different types of company vehicles. My brother’s current company truck is a single cab chevy, previous company he had a ram crew cab which apparently made it a taxable benefit. Not sure if the same in other regions but could be an incentive to buy single cab WTs. Definitely still see some big F350 crew cab plattys being used for plow trucks or boss man rides though. Might depend on if able to write off personally (ie as a small business expense that conveniently works nicely for hauling the camper) vs paying king ranch $$ for your employees to beat up.

True. But they’re working the truck. Trailers, transfer tanks, tools etc. not just a commuter vehicle. My work truck is a $75k truck and according to the dash has towed 10k out of 13k miles towing work trailers, 55 gallons drums and loads of materials. I’ve lots of friend contractors in the area with similar. Just because it’s fancy doesn’t mean it can’t work!

Haha, we do. We purchase Denali's for our owner, Superintendents and Project Managers. Denali's are literally about as available as a Lunar Rock Pro. Several months out on anything Denali. We buy SLT's this year just because it is available. We have about 12 Denali's/Slt now.

    1 - 2008 GMC Sierra 297k miles
    1 - 2012 1500 Denali 387k miles
    1 - 2012 1500 Denali 327k mikes
    1 - 2015 1500 Denali 197k miles
    1 - 2015 3500hd Denali 313k mikes
    1 - 2017 2500hd Denali 164k mikes
    1 - 2019 1500 Denali
    1 - 2021 Yukon Denali
    4 - 2021 GMC Sierra SLT

1 - 2016 Ford F-150 Lariat 136k miles (Already replaced engine block, dropping off to shop tomorrow as transmission is slipping and gone)

1 - 2019 Ford F-350 King Ranch 60k miles (Spent 1st 6 weeks of ownership at dealer. All kind of DFP Def issues, wouldn't run first 4K mikes of owning it)

1-2019 Ford F-350 Lariat 35k miles (Death wobble like a mother trucker for whatever reason on this truck. Hit a bump on highway and your teeth are chattering.)

2- F-150 Lariats with 3.5 and 2.7 ecoboost. Bunch of small things, but have not left anyone stranded yet.

All trucks see 30-50k mikes per year. No towing or anything. Just driving back and forth from home, then to job sites daily.

I am currently driving one of the new 2021 GMC Sierra's back and forth from home and the 2500 HD is currently parked. 45 miles daily. I hate to admit but it is really really nice. Pleasure to drive, gets great mileage, and even 5.3 it is very snappy. The guys that got these new this year, but we're driving the older Denali's with 6.2 swear they feel like they have more nuts to them. They are also getting about 1 MPG better than the EcoBoosts. All driving habits equal also.

They use c channel on semis. They are also alot easier to clean and don't hold dirt and moisture like a boxed frame.

While a beefy box frame would be my first choice, I'd take a beefy C channel over a chintzy box frame.

It's also a pathetic joke when people show their @$$ by posting and not knowing what they are talking about.

Behold the Ford Super Duty Frame..... GASP..... an open C channel in the bed area, Boxed cab forward and open C rear of cab similarly to the Tundra..... Granted the Gauge of steel on the Tundra Frame is likely lighter than the Super Duty Fords, but the open C frame is intentional for HD applications.

An this was made by Ford. Yes, Ford paid for this. Find the right harmonics on any truck frame and I bet you can recreate this with any manufacturer.

The chassis cab has massive things bolted to it like ambulance backs or dump beds and stuff like that. The frame needs to be nice and flat for those things. I'm sure the frame also needs to have different properties to accommodate the different things that will be bolted to it. Probably twists more than the boxed truck frame. Ultimately this is probably a question Ford can answer. Or someone that knows more about frame design, but those two frames are different.

    This is the truck frame.

    This one is boxed....

Agreed, but they only transitioned in 2017. A few years sooner than (we hope) the Tundra will in 2022, but if they were using a C-channel up till 2017, then either Fords were worse off than we thought (heh) or C-channels aren't that bad.

With that said, yeah, it'll be nice to have a fully boxed frame.

That's why I said it'd be nice. Unless one is off-roading or doing serious SERIOUS work with their truck all the time - and let's be honest, very few do that - C-channel is likely just fine for the majority of owners.

Rarely does one feature make or break a truck. Anyone can nitpick until their truck is proven superior.

A Tundra 1/2 ton will never outperform a 3/4 ton truck. They are not built for the same market. Kind of like how guys swear their Tacoma is better than 1/2 ton trucks. Both examples only hold true under a very narrow paradigm.

What you can do is compare other trucks in its fighting, weight class. The Tundra will only jump to Super-Duty levels if Toyota makes serious upgrades. Don’t expect that truck to be anything like the current Tundra or priced like the current Tundra.

Fact is- the Tundra is expensive for what it is. But for those willing to pay- they get their money’s worth. How many of us would really pay for 3/4 ton Tundra? The domestics have gas-powered 250/2500s and surely Toyota can follow suit. But is there truly a market?

I could def see Toyota overbuilding the 2022 1/2 ton for an anticipated, long-model cycle. They did this with the first-gen. In about 6-8 years, the current 3/4 ton specs will considered 1/2 trucks. Just like how today’s 1/2 truck specs were 3/4 truck specs 8 years ago.

I would guess that it is more likely for Toyota do discontinue full size trucks completely before making an HD truck

My family owned a lumberyard and we owned at least 7 C frame F350 dump trucks, flatbeds, and pickups. Truth be told that they were constantly be over loaded and driven all over NYC. Those trucks just kept coming back for more with zero frame issues. Many of the Internationals have C frames as well…can’t remember about the Mack’s…. Point being is a that properly built C frame is just as strong as a box frame at this level.

This explains it perfectly. An HD truck is more than just a frame- axles, ball joints, steering systems- all that stuff is upsized because these trucks are abused. Very rare to see an HD truck that is bought with the sole attention of never hauling or towing big loads. Most people finally buy one (in a non-commercial capacity) because their previous trucks were not up to the task.

I almost went this route but decided that if I need an HD truck- it will be a diesel. For right now, this truck is the best vehicle I have ever owned and I don’t ever plan on getting rid of it. Does so many things exceptionally well.

nobody is gonna dispute a C channel frame can be strong. Many big delivery trucks are open c channel. However that is an unreasonable comparison, as the steel thickness/size used on those applications is massive. 1/2 pickup frames are nowhere near that thick.

i think it’s just a simple statement to say that IF the tundra had a boxed version of its current frame, it would ride much better

I absolutely agree with you that the thickness of the C channel frame of the trucks I mentioned is much thicker than a Tundras or any 1/2 ton.

Basically is that I don’t see why a lighter duty C frame is not as good as a lighter duty boxed frame. I am honestly not sure about a better ride quality…I don’t really know enough to make that kind of judgement.

When empty or loaded I have always noticed frame movement. Whether it was my Tacoma’s, Tundra, or any commercial truck I have driven. The bed shimmy thing I really don’t understand. I never seen a pickup not do it…o_O

I wanted a faster vehicle so I also bought a Chevy SS... because 4 door sedans with big V8’s are hilarious.
Although this rig is probably not overloaded, I have to give major props for creativity. Behold the most expensive aftermarket bumper I have ever seen:
