Yeah, our semi floating rear axle and floppy rear open C channel frame prevent this truck from being anything like a 3/4 ton.

The only thing about our trucks that is like an HD truck is the curb weight. These things are fat pigs at 6k lbs!

Has anyone seen a leaked 'double cab' photo? All I've seen so far is the Full Crew cab.

Funny, most of the HD trucks I know do NOT have boxed frames, they have an open C in the back to be less rigid. The Tundra rear axle, carrier bearings, front hubs, etc are very robust and likely 3/4 ton capable. Suspension is what mostly limits the LD/HD rating.

I have been wondering the same thing- I’d really like an upgraded double cab with a 6.5ft bed to fit into the garage. The new crew max with a 6.5ft bed looks a little too big to fit in my garage :/

Do you honestly think the Tundra’s open C channel frame, which is made for a GVWR of 7200 lb is the same as an HD truck’s with a GVWR of 10k+ lb? Our rear axle is not a 3/4T rear end either. Remember…it’s semi floating. Maybe it seemed overbuilt for a half ton and seemed closer to 3/4T trucks in 2007, but not today. Lastly, watch your empty bed flop around in your side mirror as you go down the highway. This truck, as stated in the owners manual, is primarily a passenger vehicle.

I love my truck as much as anyone else on here, but the myth that it is really a 3/4T truck in disguise or close to one in capabilities is ridiculous.

I'm sticking with what I have, truck is long paid for and exactly what I want, but am interested to see..... Now a Hybrid DC with sunroof and roll down rear window COULD tempt me in a year or two....

Try that, with a dual axle boat trailer behind you, that's about 4-6" wider on each side than your Tundra, and total length is now close to 50'... for a couple thousand miles... BTDT. It isn't that bad, and you learn fast where your rig is on the road, and you learn to yell at the yahoos that drop in, in front of you close enough you can't see their rear bumpers, with their little honda civics and the like.... and hope to hell they don't hit the brakes hard, while you back off. Gas stations for fill ups are a challenge is the biggest issue it seems.

There are certainly a lot of parts that could handle 3/4 ton GVWR (9999 lbs - the new 2500's with 11500 lb GVWR are by legal terms 1 tons; class 3) - I would feel very comfortable with the powertrain handling it. Leaf springs are a hell no, anyone who has overloaded their Tundra can attest to the cooked spaghetti strength leafs back there. Brakes are most likely good, by size they're good but not 100% sure on the caliper pressure it can attain. And the frame is doubtful, I feel confident in it to Tundra GVWR++ but to go all the way to 9999 lbs, I don't think so. And axles by their ratings are not good, but are they rated to their max? Combined they already far exceed the truck GVWR so could they be pushed even more?

And bed flopping isn't an indicator of how strong the frame is - the second worst bed bouncing truck I've driven was an F350, far more than an F150 did.

I agree that it's fine for me to be a bit over payload every once in a while. But this powertrain lugging 10k around would be like pulling a 3500lb trailer everywhere you go. Put all of that weight in/on the truck, you'd be well over GAWR. The axles are rated for 4k/4150 front/rear. Remember, rear is semi floating. I recall recently on the forum a guy put a hay bale in the bed of his newer Tundra and hooked up a trailer with a couple more hay bales. You know, HD truck stuff. He blew out his bearings in the rear axle.

Lots of trucks with rigid frames give occupants that bed bounce feeling on seamed concrete highways. I haven't seen anything flop around visibly in the rear like the Tundra. To me, it confirms the numbers Toyota puts on the door jamb.

The guy that blew his rear axle with the hay bales was hauling an epic amount of weight if I remember correctly. It wasn’t “a little” over payload

Agreed. I wasn’t suggesting he was a little over payload. I was suggesting he was using his Tundra as an HD truck, which it is not, despite the persistent myth.

I too like to drive at high speed over alternating speed bumps. I can honestly say that in 24 years of driving, I have never incountered anything like that.

Apparently I wasn't reading very carefully. Who's defending open c channel frames?

Also, while I don't disagree with you, your argument sounds a bit like this: Most of those trucks have cylinder deactivation. We need to stop defending trucks that run on all 8 cylinders all the time.

So Toyota has something different - they get shit on. Toyota copies others - they get shit on. Only issue Toyota has had with the frames is rusting, so don't see any problem with their design.

deactivation is a debatable feature. I love my tundra and if it were wrecked tomorrow, id probably buy another one. However our frames are the only black eye. The frame flex causes the rear end to ride like crap. No two ways about it

I knew Land Cruisers have boxed frames. Hopefully the new TNGA-T to be shared with the LC, Tundra, Tacoma, Hilux, 4Runner, and Sequoia will be fully boxed.

I doubt Tacoma is getting box frame, they are never a tow vehicle, wish tundra going to get box frame to bump up the tow rating
