1 year old centeal HVAC not turning on. Was working fine but noticed yesterday it was a little hot in the house. Breakers appear to be ok. Fuses at furnace and at outdoor compressor unit look brand new. Condensate pump/emergency shutoff seem to be working fine. Regardless of thermostat settings I’m not getting any part of the system to work. Ram won’t turn on, compressor doesn’t start (not even a hum/buzz). Changed thermostat batteries for shits and giggles.

Ideas of things I should check?

Mine shut off a few times last year. Turned out the filter was very plugged up. I I was skeptical but after replacing the filter it ran fine.

Try that first, chances are you could use a new one anyway.

Sounds like a low voltage issue, either the door switch for the filter isn’t making or if you don’t see any lights on your blower board the transformer might be out

The door as in the little 1”x16” cover piece? It’s been running without that for a few months now (misplaced it) and was running just fine - but I had no idea it had/may have a switch. I’ll have to check that.

If the filter change doesn't work, try going out to the outside unit, find the corner where the electrical relays are located (sometimes you can see wires leading to them from the top grill), and give it a real good hit with the side of your fist. Quite often, contacts get welded shut from arcing, although this is usually on older units. Worth a try though. If this is the problem, the replacement part is only about $25-30. It's not hard to replace if you're comfortable working on electrical parts.

Check the capacitor for bubbling or bulging. I know only a year old but stuff happens. I replaced my units at my last house and had an issue the second year. Turned out to be fuses.

No the main furnace door has a safety switch that the panel needs to be in place properly, but if you haven’t touched that bigger door anytime recently probably not that.

Is the drain line from the evaporator coil clear? Some of them have a high level cutout on the drain pan.

Batteries are only back up so you retain settings if power goes out. Might be a tstat issue. Does the fan come on in fan only setting? Have you tried heat? Could be a capacitor too on outside unit. I noticed you are in Georgia. Like a previous poster said check contacts. Fire ants love them.

A one year old A/C unit should be under warranty. Call the contractor how installed it. I missed with my A/C unit, that was under warranty, then call the contractor who installed it. He came out to check it and because I missed with it, he said I owned it now and he was going to charge me to fix it. I said no way. My A/C unit had a 5 year Parts/labor warranty and was only 2 years old. Had to call the State contractors board to get it fix. Took 4 weeks.

If you're able to get it running and it trips off again, try running it without the filter for a while. If you have one of those really fine filters, it can cause freezing across the evaporator due to insufficient flow. I went and bought myself a really coarse filter for summer and will switch back to the finer one when I flip the heat on in the fall.

Check the fuse at the outside quick disconnect.

lesson I learned last year. Unit was 2 years old, I went to replace filters on unit and it had a 2” thick filter. Well I couldn’t find those at Home Depot so decided to put 2 1” filters.. (makes sense right? Since it had a 2” thick filter) well wrong. It put the AC under stress and blew a fuse. Fuse looked new until I took them off and tested with an ohm reader. That’s when I found out the fuse that was bad(my unit has 2 fuses at the disconnect outside) when to Home Depot put in a new fuse and boom, I was up and running again.

If nothing is turning on and your breakers are good your fuse is bad

Capacitor… worth a $20 bet if you DIY, $165-275 if you “call a guy”

edit: after reading the whole tread, agreed with others, if nothing is turning on could be a thermostat issue.

This. If the drain is clogged it wont run. Or the float switch it bad. Try jiggling the float switch if the drain pan is dry.

Also what kinda thermostat you have? Regular tstat or some crappy smart thermostat?

I'm not an ac guy but I think the fan would still run inside if the compressor outside is not working.

The 24v transformer that runs the controls is located in the furnace inside. I would look there first for power issues. Besides the breaker in the panel there may be fuses inside or next to the furnace. Maybe the little transformer took a dump. Time to dust off the voltmeter.

The thermostat is a Honeywell digital…not wifi or anything like that.

I’m leaning towards thermostat issues because in the past I’ve always had the “hum” when capacitors were the issue. Out to dinner now but will get back at it when we get home. No way to troubleshoot the thermostat huh?

You can pull the cover and jump R to G and see if your indoor fan comes on.

thank you!!! I searched for an hour looking for something like that. Couldn’t find anything besides “a cheap thermostat is $20, just get a new one to test”

I retract my previous statements. This is affecting your furnace fan or your whole system, not just your AC.

    Too many…scratch that…not done yet.
OP - Your issue sounds similar to what I just went thru. I just had a new unit installed last year. Few weeks ago, no air blowing at all. Digital thermostat would go off within seconds when trying to adjust the temp. After checking everything, filter, fuses, coils, coolant lines, condenser, etc., I was convinced it was the thermostat.

Finally checked the pan. It’s was full of water.
Turns out the drain line was gunked up which cause the pan to fill with water. Apparently units now days have a shut off switch when the pan gets full.

Vacuumed the water from the pan. Disconnected the drain pipe from the pan. Blew the line out, then poured some bleach water through it for good measure.

AC came back on within minutes. Been working great ever since.

    Good luck with it.

nope. Got home and pulled the cover off the air handler. To my very untrained eye everything looked secure BUT I did locate a 3 amp fuse that was blown. Blade style. I replaced the fuse and still no joy.
