Yeah, I’m just over GVWR with my family, dog (the 6 of us are 550lb), and spartan tent camping gear in the bed. Granted I have 285/75s, two skids, a retractable cover, dual battery setup, and a fridge. That and all the water we carry is probably the heaviest part of the gear.

Being just over doesn’t bother me, but I can’t add the tongue weight of a boat trailer in this situation. I’d have to move everything to the boat. The battery and fridge would still be in the truck. Not sure how much that would help. I could move 500 lb to the boat and then have a 750 lb tongue weight.

This is my only real gripe with the current platform. Toyota has to know this.

I wanted a faster vehicle so I also bought a Chevy SS... because 4 door sedans with big V8’s are hilarious.
Don’t try to inject levity, everyone interprets it as an insult, or takes what you say literally.

Maybe the 2022 Tundra will come with an optional sense of humor?

I am strangely attracted to that more than the bro-dozer renderings. I might like it better than the Toyota press release photo too.

Yeah, parts of it look like it’s trying too hard. I’ve thought that about the 5th gen 4R since its facelift in 2014. But the new Tundra definitely looks on-brand to me. It’s a cross between a Tacoma and a 4Runner, two of their most popular models that they have no problems selling despite an allegedly boring drivetrain in one (arguably both) and a platform nearly as long-running as the current Tundra in the other.

If the new Tundra solves the mpg and payload issues, it will be a hit.

Lol, very good observation and a good reasons for each:
    • Riding beach - long trip riding comfortable.
    • Purse - long trip which I normally drive but wife giving me a break.
    • Starbucks - again long trip :)
    • Motrin - 2 teenagers in the back seats

Thanks, I went to the Toyota website and configured a 2021 Tundra with the TRD stuff. Now I know a little more.

Here's to hoping the new Tundra keeps such flexible options with the new Tundra!

Just picked up a 21 Platinum Hybrid for my wife and what an improvement over the previous generation. She was hesitant to get rid of her 4Runner but immediately fell in love the Highlander. Definitely looking forward to some road trips. (34mpg is nice too lol)

My wife was the same way, fell in love with her Highlander immediately. It’s a 2016 that we bought brand new and she refuses to upgrade. After she drove my 2017 4Runner quite a few times she said said would never switch to the 4Runner. :(

Is the new highlander the same 4cyl hybrid that’s in the sienna? Does it feel like it has enough power? With the prices of most cars being close to msrp thinking toyota will be the Best Buy for my wife’s new car that she needs. Maybe if I get that and a tundra I’ll get screwed just a little less

When I traded the Taco for a Tundra I kept reading about how fast you get used to the bigger size. I still hate driving it in the city after two years.

Everyone on here that read that comment thinks they're in the 10%. Except me. I'm firmly in the 90% wussy camp.

My wife and I and our dog are just under 300 combined but we all still have to avoid the buffets to pull our trailer with the Plat.

The wife had a ‘16 previous gen Highlander and really liked it. Bought a new generation ‘20 limited gas which she really liked. A year later she told me that she really wanted the Platinum Hybrid but didn’t want to say anything. I mentioned to the dealer and he offered an incredible deal trading her ‘20 limited in for a ‘21 Plat Hybrid. Glad we did, the hybrid is awesome. Not sure if it’s the same setup from the Sienna but it’s plenty of power. Great fuel economy and got 32 mpg on a long trip with a large roof top cargo carrier.

Just do what every other 1/2 ton owner does: ignore GVWR and tow ratings and just carry and tow as much stuff as you want. A brief unscientific visual survey of pickups on I-90 cross SD and MN this week and up into the North Shore of Lake Superior shows a lot of guys blissfully motoring around probably 1” off their rear bump stops.

    Ignorance is bliss sometimes.

Most of the time it is just fine. A little over the official ratings is well within the safety factor zone. (This is not legal advise of course, just stating from a mechanical view) The Tundra has bigger axles, bigger brakes, thicker sheet metal etc... than a minivan, yet the minivan, that does not even have a proper frame and has coil springs in the back, has a bigger payload than the Tundra. I think the Tundra can handle a lot more than advertised. There are other reasons why the payload is what it is; one of which is to keep it in the 1/2 ton classification; Toyota is not in the 1-ton market (yet). But it would not take much to upgrade to it; frame, brakes, axles, engine etc. are ready.

With the market the way it is, I've been toying with trading the Tundra for something else. So far I've looked at door stickers on GMC, Chevy and Titan and their payload was about as low as my Tundra for similarly equiped models.

Have to disagree. I’ve been under a few 3/4 tons helping a buddy wrench on his stuff. The frame on the current Tundra is not a 3/4 or 1 ton frame. The brakes are probably OK but not ideal. The rear axle would need to be upgraded to a full floating unit but otherwise a 10.5” ring gear and 4.30:1 axle ratio would be OK. Although if the 5.7L and 6 speed had to be the engine I’d rather have a 4.88:1 because 381hp @5600 RPM’s and 401lb-ft @3600 RPM’s is going to be pretty gutless with a load on in a truck that would already weigh 7000lbs.

Yeah, our semi floating rear axle and floppy rear open C channel frame prevent this truck from being anything like a 3/4 ton.

The only thing about our trucks that is like an HD truck is the curb weight. These things are fat pigs at 6k lbs!
