Wheel bearing short cut

Someone posted under Timmy's video for bearing removal with a press and special adapter. I can't make sense of what the commenter is doing.

Anyone do it this way, or can make sense of it?

 

If I understood correctly, he removed 2 studs (lugs) from his hub, used a plate and ran bolts through the holes in the hub where studs were. Then use the nuts on the bolts to push the plate down one side at a time until it is pressed in.

Edit- just saw he says this pushes them out. I doubt he could get enough force this way but maybe he did.

That sounds like a lot of trouble and an easy way to f it up. Better off to collect the parts and find a shop willing to do the press work. The bearings are in very tight, some guys get lucky and do it at home with a press, others said the hub laughed at their press.

I found a shop near me who charged me $100 per hub and did a good job. Beats what Toyota wanted. I brought him the spindle assemblies and parts loose, he did the hard part. Toyota wouldn't touch my truck because I run aftermarket upper arms and they refused to work on loose parts if I brought just the spindles.

 

Bingo. Exactly what I did. I brought them my hubs all nice & cleaned up and they were happy to do it. Only one shop up here that I know of that has the Toyota adapter too.

 

There's definitely shade tree mechanic ways to do rear axle press work. I pulled the axles out of the truck and paid $180 at a machine shop to have both of mine done. I brought my own OEM parts. They disassembled them and put it all back together.

Is your truck ABS? Getting the ABS tone ring pressed to the right spec is something to consider when putting it all back together.

Yeah I'm starting to see the concept. This guy puts it to practice on a Ford. Different rear end set up but I think the concept is the same.

Oh shot is he talking about rear wheel bearings? Thats a different story. I read the post but didn't look at the picture

 

This is frustrating. Local independent shop has the set up for it, but refused to work on it because I already have the axles out...

I have a good press at work. Just didn't want to spend money on a $100 tool that has one purpose and I am going to use once.

 

Swing press wont work?

I actually had it blocked up and was hitting the axle with a dead blow. That collar laughed it off.

 

Sounds like @bmf4069 needs to start a tool rental progamme like I’ve got going

 

Yeah, I've got the bearing thing if someone needs to borrow it. I'm not sure how to use it though. Maybe someone smarter than me can finger it out.

@mbreed2 I don't understand the comment to the video either. I don't know how I'd have done it without the tool. I've loaned mine to another member on this site and it worked out well. He gave me a deposit, and paid shipping both ways. I refunded his deposit when he returned the tool. I'd be willing to do it again, but it's going to cost you a little over $20 each way to ship it -- so $40+ total. PM me if you're interested.
Frankly, the lack of shop press is the limiting factor for most folks. If you have access to one at work, you're halfway home.
If the price of the tool has come down to $100, I think it makes more sense for you just to buy your own, do the job, and sell it to the next guy for $60.

Des2mtn has the right idea in the picture. I tried it that method this morning. All I can say is, grade 5 bolts broke before they moved that collar.

I have the adapter on order. Less than 100 shipped. And I have access to a press at work. I just didn't want to wait another week to finish the job.
