1st Gen. Lunch Table - General Discussion

If it's a true park that's been built, yes. If it's a downhill single track in the middle of nowhere, your legs and bum are gonna regret it.

 

Ha! It's also my first day back at work since Thursday. So I was trying to be brief.

We got to Snowshoe Friday afternoon and hung out and ate Mexican and did some catching up with our friends that we stayed with.
Saturday AM, we were chomping at the bit to ride, but they don't open the trails until the lifts start to run....at 1000! Holy hell, we missed out on ~3 hours of good riding light, but we still found a way to maximize the time we had. We started green as I've been off the bike a lot more than on it the last year. After a few runs, we were feeling pretty good and progressed to blues. I think on our second full blue run (third?) it started to sprinkle. We were ~1/4 of the way down. *The resort is at the top of the mountain. So you ride down, then lift back.* The trail got pretty slick pretty quickly, but I kept the rubber side down. Steve didn't do quite as well, but no serious injuries reported. It was raining properly hard when we emerged from the trees. There was no lift line to wait in, but the lift is a ~10-12 minute ride with no cover from bottom to top. It vacillated between raining and absolutely fucking pouring during those 10-12 minutes. There were no dry parts of either of us by the time we reached the mountain's zenith.
Sunday AM, we slept in a little more. I made cinnamon rolls, and we headed out to the trails ~1010. #foolmeonce Once again, we started on greens to warm up. I then had the brilliant idea to seek out the sole blue technical trail. You guys are never going to believe this. Downhill park blue is not like central Indiana (flat as fuck) blue. I got to walk more than I care to admit, but the parts I did ride were fun and occasionally scary. We intended to circle back later in the day, but never made it. We went back to 'regular' blues and even explored the other side of the mountain. Early in the afternoon (1? 3? idk) we attempted to stop for a proper lunch at the pizza place at the opposite end of the mountain. They were out of pizza. TF. So we traversed many miles (~.5) to the regular pizza place we'd already visited once. It also happens to be in the building our room was in, so we invited the ladies and baby down to eat and visit while we had a break. Our break lasted longer than planned, but it wasn't wasted. We were pretty tired. We rolled away from lunch to do "2-4 more runs", did one, and called it. We were both having a hard time gripping the bars and were just generally tired. No sense pushing ourselves to failure. We'd had an absolute blast and agreed it would be a great weekend trip destination for a future trip. (we have done longer trips in the past and are working on details for our 2022 trip...likely to CO)
So we packed up the bikes, got into some clean clothes and spent some time with our wives and the baby.
Up early-ish Monday and started the trek home. I'll toss some pics from the trip at the end of this post.

A man amongst men to ride a hardtail on the trails I rode this weekend. My bike has 150mm front and 140mm rear travel and I got beat TF up without ever falling.

I don't think this would be any fun at all. The braking bumps alone would eat you up full rigid, let alone the actual rocks, roots, and features.
Rentals are usually pretty affordable, but can ruin the rigid bike for you if you like to ride a lot.

 

Sounds like a good trip. Rain is never awesome on a lift. You could probably add NW AR in to your travels for a long weekend trip. I have met a lot of people from your neck of the woods that come down to stretch their riding season out a bit. Our "out west trip" this year turned into a Mount Nebo trip. Besides someone turned gas prices up to 11.

 

Our first MTB trip was Bentonville three years ago. We did Pisgah/DuPont the year after. Last year (Crested Butte/Salida/front range) was called off due to the thing and a few other things. I ended up being the only one of the three of us available, so I took a different vacation and went and played cars in NEPA. Jon couldn't make this year for the same reason he couldn't make last year. (He just moved and totally missed out.)
Next year, we should have the full gang back together. Not yet sure if all the wives will attend, or when exactly we're going. But we're keen to make that CB/Salida trip happen. I would just as soon do a guys' trip and camp out of the Tundra for a week and ride trails pretty far from the hotels. The wives may have other plans...

 

I have been completely useless today at work. I can't get into one of the programs I need. Might as well start drinking beer.

 

Pisgah is another one that I need to do. Will you go back?

Salida is sort of on the list. Where are you riding? I listen to a podcast and one of the chicks on there rides out there. Hardcore. I will never be able to get my lungs ready for that kind of workout in O2 deprivation land. I need 3-4 days to adjust to elevation. That kills a vacation quick.

 

I will 100% go back to Pisgah & DuPont. So much fun.

We haven't nailed down 100% where we're going in CO. CB & Salida are at the top of my mind as I've heard a lot of good things about those two areas.
Being a low-lander, I have a hell of a time in CO doing anything more strenuous than going up stairs. I was actually training for our 2020 CO trip. When the trip fell through, I fell all the way off my training routine and basically stopped riding. If the boys commit to CO soon, I may actually buy a stationary bike so I can ride all year. Riding around here between Thanksgiving and Tax Day sucks so bad.

Though it's on the other side of the State from Salida, I'd encourage you to seriously consider Winter Park if you're looking for park riding. Or, if you want to go even further west, consider a Fruita/Moab trip.

 

Now that is METAL

 

My second MTB experience and the first in a decade was at breckenridge. I was sold. We skipped travel the next year and bought bikes. The next year the wife was out but a buddy and I went to winter park. We had a blast. My wife wanted her sister to try MTB. The wife was convinced we should go back to Breck. Her sister has never been on a MTB since. Winter park is still pretty great and it makes it hard to want to go somewhere else that is a 1.5 day drive. I think angelfire is in the cards next year though.

I also want to find a good shuttle route with a halfday ride to the bottom.

I only speak from past experiences, as I no longer have a bike. The only downside of Winter Park is that you're kind of stuck up there / there isn't really anything else within reasonable driving distance (when considering things to do in addition to riding). Can take the train to Denver I suppose, but that eats up a fair amount of time.

 

Owner of supercharged taco contacted me and decided they’re selling.. waiting on a price to be decided and I will likely own an 98 access cab V6 4x4 5 speed manual TRD offroad with a supercharger…

 

So now you have 12 tacos? And you are married. Do you have instructions on how to do this?

 

Ive never been able to fill tacos or burritos to a reasonable level. They’re all supercharged, and they always make a mess.

 

Dan I've seen you post some version of this about at least a dozen vehicles in the last 12 months. One of these days you should actually buy said vehicle.

 

Fruita is on my list also. Didn't realize how bloody far it is.
I'm not much of a jumper, so park is only nice because I'm generally unfit and too fat for climbing to be any fun.
We were at lunch on Sunday when Kelly (wife) asked if we were going to Moab next. She knows Moab from the YouTube videos I watch. (offroad and MTB)
Steve didn't seem super stoked on the idea. I think it's because he and I both know there's little for the ladies to do if they decide to go...which they consistently have since the inception of these trips.
Personally, I'd rather ride dirt in the shade of trees than rocks in full sun.

Ah shit! I always forget about Breck. I even have friends there. If any of you go to Breck, swing through Castaways for a drink and tell Mic that Dr B says Hi. It'll blow his mind and he's likely to buy you a drink for it.
Kelly (still wife) keeps talking about wanting to ride a MTB. As much as I'd love for her to do so, I don't think she has a firm grasp of how physical it is. I need to borrow a bike for her and take her out on some local (easy AF) trails to see how her enthusiasm holds up.

 

Just for clarification, I would not recommend breck for MTB.

Do you guys road ride? I'm not sure MTB would have ever been fun for us if we didn't both get a decent base level fitness from that. My wife would not be with me on an MTB if she had not done the road first. Now she will follow me down rainmaker.

@Darkness @empty_lord @FirstGenVol and any other turd herders that were water heater talking; sorry I didn’t get any pics last week but here is a 6 system Rinnai daisy chained together to feed one of our smaller 3 story holding facilities



I helped with the main vent out of the building, 6 or 8” pvc sent down in 20 foot sections from the roof top…….that was interesting; we threw a coupling on and had to stack the other 20 footer on. Haha sent it down and it only went down 2 more feet!!

 

The sun's color temperature on the ground today reminds me very much of the Eclipse from August of 2017.
