So my local dealer (Kendall Toyota of Anchorage) is now selling “certified pre-owned” Tundras with huge mark ups.

Only these aren’t used. Each of these have 4 miles on the odometer. This is weird though. They were initially selling new Tundras with $2K dealer mark up. Recently they made their new Tundra inventory zero and made them all “used”.

Why wouldn’t they just add a bigger markup to their new trucks instead of calling them used? Are they hoping to make more with financing interest since used rates are usually higher?

Following for others input. I'm interested to see what others say. Personally, looks fishy... perhaps they are getting ready to close down shop, and think used will sell quicker than new.

What a bunch of BS. Further validation of why I enjoy that dog thread so much on here. After nearly 30 years of public service type work..... I'd rather hang out with my dogs than most people. I hate shady shit like this!

Incentive reasons absolutely - possibly a bit more about the “incentive” of getting more allocation than $$ back - I/e Distributor says you can have more when you sell the last 9 we gave you - so take those 9 - “sell” them all to a shell LLC and say - “all gone - I need more” in an effort to gain more 2022s.

Or it could be either a crack down on “inflated” MSRP by the distributor and corporate.

I doubt it’s a grab for more $$ based on higher interest on “used” vs new loans - just not that much more to be had if any.

Doesn’t user get 7 year / 100k or so - vs the 3/36. Certainly not worth the markup - but might be part of the dealer logic - or it may be a “incentive” to sell more certified for $$.

Regardless - it’s more of the same BS we are gonna see for the next 18 months. Dealers trying to game the system - it’s nothing new - just more obvious these days.

    Shouldn’t be no.

But considering it’s Alaska - the cost of acquiring from somewhere else and shipping in is a consideration too. It’s not like living in a city where you can just buy from the next state over and drive it home.

Also - trying to remember- doesn’t Alaska have both 0 sales tax and some restrictions on administrative fees dealer can charge ? 0 sales tax dealers absolutely use it to their advantage in my experience- pay me 59 or save a grand buying in a state with tax and pay more in taxes kinda thing.

Also, not like dealers in Pacific NW and Cali don’t ask the same for theirs and shipping IS an option to those locales.

I am going to play devils advocate here for a moment…. Let’s just say the catalytic converters were stolen from these trucks. I am honestly not sure about Alaska law but I know in the states I frequent that vehicle can no longer be sold as “new”. I was looking a CPO 4Runner years ago that was dragged off the lot by a flatbed and found many towns away. 10 miles on the odometer…but being sold as neW. Not defending the dealer here but not enough info to say they are “CROOKS” just yet…

The only people at fault would be the ones willing to pay that price. But to each their own.

As supply goes down and demand goes up, prices will also go up. Basic economics at play.

One guess I have is that maybe dealerships can only mark up so much above MSRP so if they mark it used, then they can mark up as high as they feel someone will buy it for. Whether or not it's deceptive and unethical to do...

I actually got a great warranty and comparable financing when I bought my 2019 Platinum 3 months ago but it is truly used with 24,000 miles, Toyota Certified. Warranty extends to a full 100,000 miles and I'm at 1.9%.

Amazes me the things people get all worked up over. I have better things to worry about than looking for perceived injustices.

That was my initial thought as well. Manufacturer may have a cap on markup for new vehicles and this is a way around that. Sell it to yourself at wholesale price then mark it up for big profit.

My guess is two things. First the dealer can show sales of them as new, so that they can order more new ones and get them. Second, on used vehicles the market sets the prices, not the manufacturer. So, they can price them at whatever the market will bare as a used vehicle.

It looks like the free market at work. If there are restrictions on new sales then simply switch them to 'used' and let the market decide the price.

As another post alluded to above, the CPO warranty takes the drivetrain warranty out to 7 years/100k miles. My local dealer values that @ $1,900.

Maybe the web sales guy just screwed up on the listings and marked them as used instead of new.
Have you called and asked them about it or are we just making assumptions based on something we saw on the internet?

A friend of nine leased a 2019 Mazda CX-5 for his wife, the dealer contacted him with an offer a couple months back. My friend had been thinking about buying the car when the lease was done, but after running the numbers from the offer he accepted. He turned in the 2019 CX-5 for a 2021 CX-5 for $5.00 a month difference, both were/are 3 year lease.

That would seem to indicate the dealer could make a bigger prophet on the sale of the used 2019 over the new 2021.

I'm not sure why people think that a business that maximizes their profits is considered scamming people. Capitalism at it's best and anyone can sell anything for any price. If you don't like the price, don't buy it and who cares if they say it's used. If the truck checks out and the warranty is the same nothing to worry about.

Pure capitalism. If they put a price cap on what it can be sold for, then people would complain that the free market rights are restricted. If consumers are willing to pay the price, then the price will be what it is. Once demand decreases, prices will decrease as follows.

Funny - some people that on here believe the USA is a pure capitalistic economy.

Without getting into some deeper political debate nit related to the topic at hand - we are not pure capitalist.

Pure capitalist exist only when you have both maximum profit takers and pure risk. While we try to maximize profit - there are curbs in place in many states to limit that. Likewise - we are far from pure risk - a dealer buys 100 cars and market forces suddenly shift and they are sitting on 100 unsold cars worth 50% of the price paid - pure risk…that dealer is shuttering the doors - our economy- the government is finding a way to keep them and their employee jobs afloat.

Remember the US govt was the largest GM stakeholder for a number of years recently and holds a lot of stock in many airlines presently as well as finance obligations issued by these companies. None of that could exist in pure capitalism.

I’m all for a great deal. But I don’t hear anyone bitch when manufactures offer $5-10k off msrp to move vehicles. But if it’s the other way around it’s a scam. :facepalm.

The automotive industry is just insane right now. Used vehicles more than new because people can't wait 1-1.5 months. Just blows my mind.

One of my best friends has been discussing getting a F-250 in the Tremor package. He has been seeing pricing over 80K even used due to mark ups. I chatted with him a bit and suggested he get the F-350 Tremor or he would be in the same boat that he is in with his current Raptor. We then started to look at just ordering one through Ford and waiting. Sure as hell, he built one with the 7.3L/10 speed auto, the color and options he wanted brand new for 67K. He picks it up the first week of August right before his week long bachelor party all over Colorado.

I looked at those truck at the dealer here in Anchorage and asked what the deal was. They are “used” because they were purchased for a rental company in Valdez that is owned by the dealers parent company. The rental company decided they didn’t want the trucks, but since they had been titled, they cannot be sold as new. So you end up getting a new truck with factory warranty and an extended power train warranty. Used tundras up here are at insane prices.
