6.2 is a good engine, but the 3.0, isn't there some part sandwiched between the trans and engine that'll be a nightmare for long term ownership?

I do hear excellent things about it's driveability

Timing belt, I think, yeah. I'd never own one anyway but that's just another reason to stay away.

I also suspect it's gone, but keep hearing the rumour. The current 5.7 is so thirsty, I think if it did return it'd need more than just a 10AT

It's the oil pump belt you have to remove the trans to replace but I think the interval is 150k. I would be more worried about the complex systems before I was worried about that belt, although it is a dumb design.

So to recap the thread so far, we're all really pissed off because Toyota is doing a slow roll and won't show us anything. But we've seen enough to know the new truck is ugly and the interior is lame and the engine won't last 100k miles.

This is gonna be so fun.

A 700-ftlb hybrid drivetrain with 25-30mpg and 2k+ lbs of payload would be a world beater.

The rumors about the drivetrain and the rear undercarriage spy pics lead me to believe this is going to be more of a full-size Hilux and less of a larger Tacoma.

I don't think a few 100k miles will be a problem for any Toyota, I kind of like the front and the profile. But the tailgate, and those interior spy shots, how'd the plans for that crap make it out of the design room shred box.

What is it with the Taco's power struggles? The wife has an 05' 4runner w/ the 4.0L, I believe rated at 245hp. I don't regularly drive it but power seems sufficient. Today's taco 3.5L is what @278hp. (max rpm or close) why is it such a slug?

I wanted a faster vehicle so I also bought a Chevy SS... because 4 door sedans with big V8’s are hilarious.
The 1/2 ton truck market is no longer centered around trucks doing truck stuff. The models focused on that are slow sellers. The vast majority of 1/2 ton buyers want a soft ride, lots of amenities, plenty of room inside, and decent fuel mileage considering what they’re driving. Most of them don’t two or haul anything on an even semi-regular basis.

The sales numbers prove this out, the best selling 1/2 tons are as close as a truck can get to being a big sedan with a bed. Guys who want trucky trucks buy 3/4 tons and 1 tons.

You might not like it, but that is the reality of the market. Toyota has observed this trend and is offering a product aimed at servicing that larger market. Plus ever stricter emissions and fuel efficiency standards leaves Toyota no choice, 1/2 tons don’t have a high enough GVWR to avoid these tougher standards. While you and I might be willing to pay a gas guzzler tax, most consumers are not.

    I think it looks good.

With that said, it looks vaguely like the interior of an F150, so you KNOW that 'must' mean they copied the F150. ;)

Only serious issue I see is the shiny black trim below the screen....that'd be blinding if the sun hits it just right.

People will bitch about everything; they could put a magic genie in the dash that tosses out $50 dollar bills every time you ask it to, and people would be pissed it wasn't $100s.

Also, I'm pretty sure that interior is pre-production as they're testing the new drivetrains. The head unit doesn't match up with what Toyota officially released at all, and I can't imagine them having two different infotainment systems for different trims.

LOL, that’s about the gist of it. Maybe broken down into a few camps:

1.) The new truck is ugly, doesn’t have a V8, won’t last 100K miles, has too much tech, and it’s ugly. Did we say ugly twice? Well that is because one ugly isn’t enough to describe how ugly it is. Did we mention it is ugly? If you buy one it will break down, and the ugliness will infuriate passers by so much they will murder you. Assuming you don’t suck start a pistol out of despair at how your ugly truck stranded you.

2.) The new truck is the next coming of the Toyota Messiah and will be the best thing ever. It’s going to be so good it will cure cancer and make your junk bigger and harder. It is literally impossible for Toyota to make an error in judgment, and doubting them is tantamount to a cardinal sin.

3.) Toyota hasn’t actually released and numbers so we can’t tell much about it aside from how it looks, and we’re reserving judgment until then.

Please note that camp #3 has no actual members.

My thoughts are that this is all correct, I just hope Toyota has something up their sleeve. On what hand it's good because a V6 gasoline anything doesn't entice me in the slightest to buy a new truck. On the other hand, if they come up with diesel option, then I will be more than intrigued.

In all honesty though look at the size and weight of the “things” 1/2 ton pickups are towing. My 2013 ATV weighted over 700 pounds my 1st one was about 400. Basically what I am saying is that the toys we purchase are becoming so large and heavy that the segment simply can’t keep up…meaning heavier duty trucks are needed.

Interior looks good to me, i see large, physical buttons for each of the things i'd want easy access to like climate control and volume. I'd personally like to see the shifter disappear for more console space and easier access for placing phones/wallet/etc, but you just know people would bitch about losing a traditional shifter.

Nissan straight up copied Ford with the 2016 Titan. Dropped door window. Dash design. And wtf with the headlight switch? Since when did a Japanese branded vehicle use a dash mounted rotary knob for the headlights?
Ford should have got their best lawyers out and shit all over Nissan for the flagrant plagiarism.

If y'all think I know too much about that, it's because I am a huge fan of the first gen Titan, and Nissan let a woman trash the 2nd gen.

I see zero Ford in the new Tundra, I think Toyota is being mostly unique, imo.

I agree on truck market is changing. People that never would have thought about purchasing trucks 20 years ago, are buying trucks. I would venture to say 90% of truck owners don't really research much. They go to the dealer, test drive, then buy. For the people that don't research, they are going to pick the big 3 90% of the time. For a quick 10 minute test drive, they are going to be very impressive and best the Tundra by a good bit with flash and added features.

I know many F150 owners and most don't have a clue what engine is in it. They say it has an EcoBoost. I ask them which one and they just say what do you mean, it is an ecoboost. They have no clue if it is 2.7 or 3.5.

The type of buyer in the 1/2 ton truck world has changed. 80% of the trucks out there never see anything more than some furniture or have of mulch in the bed.

    You’re not wrong.

Look at campers (a thing I don’t have an interest in) they are as big as a damn apartment now! It’s nothing to have a camper with a true gross weight north of 8000lbs, personally if I plan to tow that kind of load around long distances frequently in all conditions I’m buying a 3/4 ton diesel even if they are maintenance hogs.
