2022 Tundra

I ordered my GMC 2500 without the seat sensors. Really like the seats, they are a little more comfortable than what was in my Platinum Tundra. Was very comfortable driving 11 hours with only bathroom breaks for my 6 year old daughter.

 

Toyota is reading this forum thinking “ they are starting to talk about how great the domestics are!! Release more info!!”

 

The 5.0L Cummins was originally designed at the behest of Daimler/Chrysler before the financial crisis of 2008. They planned to put it in their 1/2 ton ram. When Chrysler went tits up the deal fell through, and Cummins shopped around for someone who wanted a diesel that could fit in that footprint.

Rumor is Toyota looked at it and said “nope”, Nissan decided they wanted to give it a try.

 

Proof to me that human pride in work outshines soulless robots. Would be a great blue collar job too imo !!

I put 200 miles on the chevy this weekend and got 20.8 mpg, thats a mix of in town, highway and oklahoma back roads.

Not too bad. No issues with the seats, the cooling feature is awesome btw.

After 2 days and those miles so far I can say it is not the chevy truck of my past thats for sure.

I honestly hope that Toyota pulls this off and its not a dud. Maybe if the new model is a proven winner in a few years I will be back, but whatever I am in will do my best to go with all the luxury I can get LOL.

 

3.5 N/A in base truck? What kind of payload and towing with an engine of that size? Crazy if true. Ford does this in some trucks but they are obviously not built for towing/payload and are grocery getters.

3.5 TT hybrid- What could go wrong with that? I hope there isn't anyone on earth who thinks any engineering company can stuff that much new tech into a new model and even come close to approaching the reliability/longevity of the previous 5.7.

 

Salient point. However, if fore to aft clearance was the problem in the new engine bay a switch to electric fans could easily gain several inches and help packaging.

Agreed this may be a challenge but if planned for from the jump it could be done. Keep in mind packaging the twin turbos, intercoolers, and associated plumbing isn't much of a space saver either.

 

With no disrespect, if you're going to buy a new truck every 2 years anyway, what drew you to Toyota in the first place?

 

You answered your own question. The big 3 are putting NA V8s in base trucks.

 

I usually trade truck on average ever 2-4 years and I was drawn to Toyota due to their resale value, if you trade trucks often Toyotas have a clear advantage to never really losing any money. Every other domestic truck I have owned was a loser at trade time, the Toyotas..not so much

 

To all y'all actually discussing whether or not a V8 could fit in the upcoming Tundra..... have y'all even seen pics of the truck yet? It has a ginormous schnoz that would make a Mack truck proud!

I traded for my first tundra on July 2013. I had been looking at something different and was wanting to give Toyota a shot

so I traded in a 2011 ram

I have kept vehicles longer than 3 years but 3 years is normally my trading point.

Keep in mind that 3.5 NA is probably putting out the same power the v8s were 20 years ago and they worked just fine. I wouldn't want one, but as a small delivery truck it would work.
The turbos and hybrids are not exactly new technology either. Toyota has had very reliable hybrid technology for many years now and have been using turbos for several years in their Lexus cars as well. Neither one is technology that would scare me away.

 

I guess nowadays you gotta read the fine print rather than just believing the initial spec or the ads.

 

This is getting next level - and it shows to me Ford pushes the absolute limits to get these ratings. By reading the comments I bet TFL grabs at least Ram and GM to do a similar test and monitors temps - and getting a Tundra wouldn't surprise me as Roman mentioned it specifically with the trans cooler.

Funny you mention reading fine print on trucks as I just read an article (Motor trend IIRC) that the F150 got pinched by the fine print again. Had a 9000 lb towing test all lined up then they double checked the tow ratings for the 3 half tons - the Ford was only 7600 lbs. Just another example of how important it is to check individual ratings - and a reason I really like the Tundra; lack of configurations takes a lot of guessing away and can confidently jump from one to another and trust the ratings.

 

just curious how hot it is where your at, all the ventilated seats I’ve used just blew hot air up my back side until the cabin cooled off, it was better than nothing but I still prefer cloth seats as they don’t get as hot to start with.

 

90s with 80% or higher humidity.

These seats get freaking cold.

 

Interesting explanation from Ford. Basically equals, "Our POS will only do what we said it would do if you use it 30 mph under the speed limit on a pleasant day, on comfortable thoroughfare. If you use it outside those conditions, it is so dangerous that we need a kill switch to stop your vehicle from blowing up on the highway. But at least we installed the kill switch correctly."

Toyota's take: "So few of you actually use the vehicle for what we originally designed it for, we are going to delete the aux trans cooler and just cover costs for the very few that actually use their truck when it fails within the warranty period(win for us on upfront cost). As those of you that actually use your truck to tow like this without the aux trans cooler will most likely not fail until just after the warranty period is up, we will gladly sell you a new truck at that time(also a win for us). This is what we at Toyota call a win-win situation"

FWIW, I (and am sure many others on here have) have have towed with my Tundra on both these stretches of I-70 (Ike and Vail)in both directions on the same day multiple times. Towing a 7k Travel Trailer in both directions with a 2018 with the trans cooler on hot days as part of 7 or 8 hour towing day has never been a problem. Never saw a trans temp above 206F. My last trip out west was in May/June, payed attention everytime I saw a powerboost or baby duramax with a rig similar to mine. I would be considered a cautious driver by any measure and never saw a single one pass me in the mountains. I went by a handful of each that looked like they were worried the rig that were taking was going to crack their truck in half.

I don't trust specs or stickers, I trust performance. This is one of the most worthwhile vids that TFL has ever produced, most of it is useless. Their goal should always be to max stress these things. Now I want them to get out on a vacant tarmac somewhere with a 10k load behind them at 65mph, engage the ABS and see how these things really stop with load behind them.

 

There are ventilated seats, and then there are cooled seats. They are not the same thing. The company Chevy I used a few times had cooled seats. Tundras (and I think all toyota/lexus) only have ventilated seats.

Yup. Chevy does both, and it is one feature I would very much like in anything vehicle. Leather or cloth, IDC. It is so much more effective than regular AC when it comes to making you feel cooler on long trips in the sun. Little jealous of that feature, Rich.

 

Even ventilated seats are not all equal. The seats in our ES do a much better job of cooling than the seats in my Tundra.

 

The Tundra ventilated seats are pretty much useless. I can't even tell you if they are on. Yes I verified they really are working.

The ventilated seats in our 4Runner Limited are marginally better but pretty much useless. Both my wife and I never use them.

Now the actual cooled seats in the Denali's I drive from time to time at work...... They are pretty sand cool and feel great!

 

The only way I've heard of the Tundra ones being effective is if you crank the AC and put it to your feet so the seat can pull that cool air that is piped under the seat for the rear floor vents. Even then, minimally effective.

 

Yea, I don’t even bother with the ventilation seats in my plat. Not worth the time to turn on or adjust.

 

No, the newer NA V6s don't make power the way an old school V8 does.
"Peak power" might be the same or better, but the old V8s make way more torque, with a broad torque band from low revs.

A old 200hp V8 can certainly be more pleasant to drive than a modern 300hp NA V6.
