I had a Renegade before the Tundra. I wouldn't get one with anything but the 2.4 liter engine. Solid little rig, and in 2018 it was the only thing with a Jeep nametag that was projected to have good reliability. It was a fantastic little 4wd grocery getter. Good visibility, easy to maneuver, comfortable, and totally acceptable MPGs. It was just "sporty" enough to have fun, but nothing that would inspire stupidity in exuberant youths.

Honesty, seeing the prices they go for now, I wish I had kept it. At the time I thought "Well, if I miss it I can pick up another one down the road." Boy was I wrong.

Have have great success with Mazda 3s in either sedan or hatchback. It is probably one of the best smaller cars out there. Good performance, safe, good MPG and actually fun to drive. We have had 2, daughter drove them both and still has the newer one for her car to this day. They are very reliable and not expensive to maintain.

I always laugh at this. A car that owes its success to kicking ass in rally but they run around saying "made with love". They are great cars but those boxer motors seem to need unusual repairs in the older models. I have known a lot of people who onwened them trouble free for years though to be fair.

As a lifetime VW lover and owner of a GTI for the last 6 years I will tell you stay away from VW unless it is a TDi. Any other motor and they need either somebody who really knows VW or somebody who likes burning money.

A little old Scion is a great option and really suited to a young driver. My wife has owned one for 11 years and its damn near bullet proof. Can't beat the gas mileage either.

I bought a little Scion tC for my wife back in late 2005. We still have it, although she’s not been easy on it from a running into things standpoint.

My wife is really good at ruining sheet metal on vehicles. -=unamused=-

On the plus side like yours ours has been virtually bullet proof.

I love it! Hurts to see that a 67 got chopped up but I'll hope it had some irreparable rear end damage. 67 is one of the most highly desired years, first year of 12v, last year of nice bumpers, small turn signals, oval tail lights, and classic metal dash, first year of vertical headlights. The surf theme fits very well here.

My wife has run into lots of stuff in hers, she has the 06 Xa. One day I plan to replace both bumpers and paint it myself. That 1.6 motor is not exciting but it only has one problem I have seen and thats the coil packs. Cheap to replace, I keep an extra one under the seat and don't have to worry.

Just got to thinking…what about an older Honda Pilot? 4wd and an suv, super solid engine and it’s a Honda.

Dang, we’ve had our 2012 pilot since new and out 110,000 miles on it (it even has cylinder deactivation) and it hasn’t given us ANY issues. Did you have bad experience with them? Only wondering for the sake of conversation.

Older v6 Honda’s, in general, had transmission problems. The vans were the worst, but none of them were great. It’s fairly common knowledge in the industry.

Here’s a more recent lawsuit. They had recalls and lawsuits on the older ones as well.

    https://knightlawgroup.com/honda-pilot-odyssey-transmissions/

I would avoid older Honda V6 products if it were my money.

That said, anecdotally, my wife drives a Honda product with 110k (4cyl) on it and it’s been phenomenal.

My daughters are getting Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic…maybe a Camry. They will get to pick the top three choices for colors. Beyond that, unless they are paying for the car, have no say in this.

Then again, my 12 year old wants a Tesla Model 3. I have already told her to save her money and research. She came back and no longer wants a Tesla. “Dad, I only have 3500.00 in the bank. It would take too long saving for one.”

I got my daughter an '07 Camry in 2017. Other than an oil leak that prompted me to replace the valve cover gasket, it has been rock solid. I see dozens of them still on the road, so the reliability must be very good overall.

    Dad?!

    :D

Seriously though...that's exactly what my Dad told us, and what I'm telling my son. I mean, I'm not a jerk - I'll work with him, within reason, but in the end, I win. LOL

Better than what my Dad said:

"Son, I could by you a nice used car....but I'm not."

"I could pay for your insurance, but I'm not."

"So in closing, you have to cover the car, insurance, registration, maintenance and I will cover anything else."

Yes, that was what I had to do as well. But both of my kids saved me TONS of money by being near the top of their classes (my daughter was salutatorian) and getting full scholarships. The Tacoma (son) and Camry (daughter) were MUCH cheaper than tuition!

I did part time and my Dad didn't care either way. It made me work hard for my things. Funny, I had nicer vehicles than he did. In HS I had a 4x4 truck (he did not), a hot rod (Nova), Ford Escort for jumping (I shit you not), and a Sport Bike (Ninja 750).

If my Dad needed to borrow any of them...it was a "yes sir...let me fuel that up for you."

Incentivizing good behavior and hard work if you can is just good parenting. Plus in the end it saves you and your kids money.

Well I drove roughly 1200 miles looking for something that wasn’t a shitbox. Had a Volvo die on me during the test drive… had to walk back to the dealer. It was only a few hundred yards, but still not ideal.
Ended up buying a 2017 jeep renegade limited with less than 80k miles on it. Found one that the dealership had transposed a 3 and a 8 on the online price. They had to honor the $5k difference due to the advertising.

I'll likely be splitting the difference - e.g., I don't have any issue buying a cheap car for my son to use when the time comes, but until he has a steady job and all that, it is *MY* car, and the only way he'll be able to use it other than the VERY occasional trip around town is if he gets his own job, pays for insurance, etc.

I can't speak for everyone, but I got no car. My sister got two before she left the house; and my brother got one. All 3 of us have our heads on straight, are married, doing well in our chosen professions, etc. The quality of the upbringing had far more to do with how we turned out than whether or not we got a car.
