I’m getting 9mpg towing with my HD gasser, about the same as my Tundra did. Seems to be typical, at least for other people who do a lot of hills.

Don’t give them ideas. A Toyota NA staff lawyer in the liability mitigation department just read your post and is drafting a memo right now.

I think something destroked to like 2.5-2.8L, V25A twin turbo would be pretty sweet too.

That 4.0 in the 4runner is an absolute beast compared to the 2.4 liter that was in my '91 4runner.

I had a 1998 4Runner 4x4 with a 4cyl (don’t remember the specifics) and that truck was dangerously slow. I feel your pain… Thankfully they did away with the 4cyls in the 4Runners.

I really don't think the 5th gen is quite as underpowered at its made out to be. Sure it could use alot more but I belive most of it has to deal with how Toyota programmed the pedal for economy. It takes a while to learn you've got to mash the pedal to go anywhere.
I pulled a 21' bassboat all over the south east with mine for a year that is damn close to 5k fully loaded with gear and fuel. It turned alot of rpm up hills but it pulled it just fine. I upgraded to the tundra simply because I was pulling it for long trips and I wanted a TT

TRD Air Filters, Front door windows tinted to match the rears. Wheel locks, Talons Garage cat shield, Tyger Automotive soft tonneau cover, WeatherTech floor mats with Tuff Skinz Custom Emblem kit, Toyota OEM Emblem Black Out kit. AVS vent covers on all four doors, Red Tundra letters on front bumper & TRD highlighted in Red on front grille. Tailgate Tundra Letters in Black.
My dealer told me that they still will be making the 5.7 V8 in 2022 models but phase out.

    Anybody else here that?

On flatter terrain I really had no complaints but once I got into the mountains I noticed it. It would scream going up moderate inclines. And I rarely drive over 70 in any of my trucks. Never enough to sell or hate but it should have more power IMHO.

I was extremely disappointed with the towing ability though. Most times I would trailer about 1.5 to 2k and the transmission would gear hunt like crazy. And typically I never exceed 60mph with a trailer attached. The 4.0 Tacoma much better at towing. Definitely not a fan of towing with the 4Runner but I still think it’s a great truck AS IS.

Simply put I went to the Tundra because I know at 60 mph that, that truck was going to cruise along safely with pulling a 2k load. Rather have and not need it than need and not have theory…

    A bunch
The changes they made in 2014 are annoying, pedal used to be like it is now with tow/haul mode. So that gives the impression it is underpowered and that's compared to other Tundras.

Then there seems to be a bunch that think it should tow like a diesel, low RPM and it just chugs along. No gas engine works like that, not even the new F150 Powerboost.

And interesting side note for those wanting a diesel: guess what Ford is discontinuing - 3.0 PS. Ford doesn't even sell enough diesels to warrant it, so still think there's a sniff that Toyota will jump into that game?

my 2007 4.0 Tacoma pulls my 2,500# boat great up to about 70 mph. But it would be a lot more fun in a tundra and my next boat will be in the 6-7k range so I’m anxiously awaiting this new tundra. Besides towing, just taking long road trips in bigger over powered trucks is so much more enjoyable and the taco always feels underpowered no matter what I’m doing with it.

That's funny because my cousin's justification for buying first a Colorado and then a Ridgeline for his work truck is "it's nicer to drive a lighter truck".

But when a bunch of us were at his place and wanted to go check out the nearby brewery, he dragged out the crew cab Super Duty and his wife dragged out the Expedition.

re: Tacoma vs Tundra ride - my brother had a tacoma for a while, but really liked the ride in my Tundra. He felt it was due to the longer wheelbase. He said it felt like his tacoma went up /down more due to being shorter. I've ridden in a tacoma a few times, and noticed it had a different ride, but wasn't sure what to attribute it to. There are so many variables, width, length, suspension, etc.

As far as ride comfort is concerned the Tundra is hands down the best of any Toyota trucks in addition to their SUVs/cars.

The 1st gen Tacoma had a nice ride. The 2nd gen was a bouncier ride.

My Tacoma felt more jittery than my tundra. I assume its because they were a lot lighter especially in the rear.

Just got a ‘21 Tacoma for my son which I’ve also been driving around. My Tundra with Kings is a much better feeling ride but it’s also like driving a tank. The Tacoma is much more nimble and can navigate around much easier. Personally, I think they are both nice trucks with different purposes.

when it comes to hitting cruise control and sitting back for any significant amount of time I’ll take any half ton and up for enjoyability and comfort. I drove my bosses tundra 5.7 on a 6 he round trip once and was amazed at how much more enjoyable it was, same with my dads f250. Feeling that power passing cars on the highway made me smile. My Tacoma is great for driving around in the hills and when it snows however. My taco only gets 16-17 driving 65+ mph anyway so gas mileage is a wash. Although I can squeeze 21 going under 55.

Infact the only thing I like about the smaller trucks is parking, driving around town and driving in the hills. And they used to be a lot cheaper. But that doesn’t seem true anymore.

I'm pretty sure a Taco is essentially the same price as a Tundra here.

True but this was for a 20 minute ride on gravel roads.

my dads f250 was a lot better on gravel Washburn roads as-well do you o the weight I assume. Also of note I get about 17-18 mpg highway in my Tacoma but get 15 mpg towing my boat.

    Nice! Congrats!

Now you can keep that, most likely trouble free, for the same amount of time you owned your Tundra, then have the option of coming back over. You got it at such a good price that you pretty much can't get hurt. Not a bad position to be in at all, you sold high and bought low! Enjoy!
