What, a stereo question??

Hey all, 18 days until I take delivery of my ‘21 crew TRD. I know that factory amp\sub is normally lackluster at best so that is my first audio upgrade. I need opinions, do the remaining 11 speakers sound good? I’m no audio snob but I really enjoy my music.

I have a ‘21 CM with the non-JBL and the sound is OK’ish but it is in definite need of an upgrade.

I’ve been researching for awhile now and I even rented headphones from Crutchfield so that I could listen to the different brands of component speakers online. For me, it came down to the Hertz K170 and the Kenwood KFC-P710PS. Ultimately, I settled on the Kenwoods because the Hertz sounded a bit too “trebly”.

For the rear I’m going with Kenwood KFC-P510PS.

im not touching the center dash speaker. I will be moving the front tweeters from the dash to the sail panels.

For the subs, I ordered (1-2 month delivery) a box from Fox Acoustics that has room for qty 2, 10” subs. The subs will be Rockford Fosgate R2SD2-10.

For the amps, both will be Rockford Fosgate. The components will be powered by R2-500X4 and the subs by the R2-500X1.

Since I’m keeping the factory radio, the R2-500X4 has speaker level inputs and an RCA output to connect the R2-500X1. Not to mention both amps have CLEAN technology to prevent clipping.

I’m no audiophile, nor expert and certainly not rich but I hope to have a great system once it’s installed.

As to other system options I came across while researching, I’ve found that some people have had luck, some have had bad luck with ********* or Tech12Volts. I will let you do your own research on them on this forum as well as others.

Just throwing this out. I seen other installs with 2 amps. Why not just run a 5channel amp? Plenty of power. I have done this in the past and my systems kicked ass.

 

Good point on the 5ch vs having 4ch & mono.

it’s been awhile but I recall that the 2 amp option was a tad cheaper way to go.

I think you pay a little extra for the convenience of having an all in one amp.

 

I agree you probably pay more for the one amp but if you can do it I think it’s the way to go. I’m working on doing a build for my 21 Pro. Have had a lot of systems over the years. I’m doing the 5 channel amp again. Have not decided yet on which one.

 

Since you’re looking at upgrading and have a ‘21 like I do, I wanted to ask if you plan on keeping the factory radio and adding an amp?

I’ve been looking for wiring options, color codes, what if any harnesses there are out there.

I found some posts but they were not ‘21 tundras and since Toyota changed the radio for the ‘21 I didn’t know if what I found would be applicable to me.

It seems to me the most worriesome part is the wiring of the stock amp under the passenger seat and connecting to the new amp.

 

I think the radio in the 2021 is the same one that is in the 2020. The radio itself sucks....no real tuning adjustments, poor volume control between inputs, etc. The speakers are really crappy as well. I yanked mine out of my 20. Pioneer head unit, Pioneer dash speakers, and Rockford door speakers/amps.

 

I have a good friend owns audio store. Been dealing with him and the installer for over 20 years. All of my installs over the years I changed the headunit. This time I’m not. Majority of there installs are done with the factory headunit. I can always change it down the road. I don’t do the installs. I trust them a lot doing them. Never had a issue. They know there stuff. I’m also getting stuff from tech12volts from James. Been in touch with him on stuff. My last build years ago was in my C5Z06. I miss that build. They did it and I picked all the stuff. I could have competed in audio competition with that. Sound deadening the whole car. I had people at audio show listen to it. They were blown away. Even my audio place they could not believe how it sounded in a corvette. I’m not rushing into this. I take my time and do all my research. Going one amp under the passenger side is the way to go. Im getting the RF processor from James for the headunit.

 

I’m definitely keeping the head unit. Again, not a headbanger (anymore), honestly just looking to add some bass. Anyone know what wattage the factory amp is the 21, I can’t find it anywhere in a search. I’ve heard 440, 110.. I’ve seen a couple posts where some guys have added shallow 10" and wired directly to the factory sub with good results.

 

There are two reasons that I see for running two amps. As others have stated, it is generally cheaper if you need a ton of power for your subs. Or there is not a 5 channel available to push the subs that you are running like in a boat for example.
