Again - all the talk of “owners abandoning the V8 when gas hits $4”.

The last time gas APPROACHED that figure nationwide was 2011-2012. Was there a slowdown in sales - yes.

Was there a slowdown in sales of virtually every other consumer item - Yep.

It wasn’t gas prices that killed sales - it was the economy. People weren’t rushing out buying Prius - they weren’t buying anything - check the sales figures - every model was down - not just big engines.

Buyers taste might change and small cars might come back into fashion - but it doesn’t mean that owners will abandon their current vehicle nor that prices will crash. It does mean manufacturers will likely cut production to reflect demand - but values of used are tied to more than new supply alone.

What if as a result of the low demand and higher fixed cost the manufacturers raise the cost of a base model half ton to 55k in 2023? You still think used prices bottom ? There will always be a NEED amongst buyers for a truck - it might wane amongst those who don’t absolutely need it - but the people who need them don’t have a choice and if new cost 55 as an entry point - you can guarantee clean late model used won’t be far behind. It’s pure economics - prices will adjust to reflect the cost of the nearest comparable good.

Just like when you can’t buy coke - most normal buyers don’t not drink soda - the drink Pepsi. If the price of one is lower - it’s volume spikes as they are comparable goods.

What are you basing this statement off of? The value of the 5.7 isn’t going anywhere, esp not down.

I would be all over this if I could buy a Gen 3 in ‘22 or ‘23. However, I am not interested in the ‘22 and the TT V6 that comes along with it. With that being said, I will hold on to my ‘21 Platinum for a long time.

I picked up a 2021 Tundra Trail fresh off the lot a week ago. I find it interesting that the dealer markup in Dublin, CA for a Tundra was $9k (I’m happy with what I talked dealer down to in this market and with the ridiculous demand for trucks) while a friend sent us this pic of a Tacoma in SoCal. That’s a freaking Tacoma!!!C6EC90F9-AE31-4793-BE1D-70A5EED08DAE.jpg

2008.... gas prices UP. Truck and SUV sales DOWN. Small car sales like Prius UP.

Poor economy also shifts sales away from larger more expensive vehicles like trucks an SUVs to smaller less expensive vehicles.

2008 Headline: Gas prices put Detroit Big Three in crisis mode

Gas prices have accelerated the move away from trucks and sport utility vehicles at a furious pace, leaving the Big Three at the most critical crossroads in 30 years.

Pickup, SUV sales downAs of April, year-over-year sales of large pickups were down 17 percent and large sport utility vehicles were down 29 percent, while sales of subcompacts jumped 33 percent and the Toyota Prius hybrid was up 23 percent, according to Autodata Corp. The shift was exacerbated by a perfect storm of high gas prices — which soared 10 percent between March and April alone — as well as the weak economy, tightening credit and the slowdown in home construction.

Yes - in 2008 there was a massive amount of people dumping there large vehicles in favor of smaller, cheaper cars. Cash for clunkers and all that.

Now my memory isn’t the sharpest - but runs in my mind there might have been a few other wrinkles hitting consumer wallets about that time in general too - so I wouldn’t say gas prices caused the change in taste. I mean wasn’t a quarter of the US or something like it delinquent on their mortgage payments and more than 5% in bankruptcy?

Your memory is pretty darn good. Yes, 2008 was a year of reckoning for many. Banks were making loans to people who had no business buying MacMansions, finding themselves upside down in homes that they would eventually abandon after they had stripped all of the fixtures and toilets. Just despicable behavior. And, I also recall several years before, circa 2002-2003 when everybody and his soccer mom, decided they had become expert day traders.

So many think they have found the get rich quick scheme. C'est la vie....

Anyway, I don't think the current environment is nearly the same. The economy is expanding, demand for workers is high and both small and large businesses are growing. Demand for goods and services continues to increase. It is a good time for free enterprise and investment.

I will throw my hat in the ring. I live in the Devil’s crotch of Florida, no inventory. A dealer found me what I wanted, 2021 4x4 crew max limited with TRD package. Window sticker was $59k. They came down to $54,2500 and gave me $2k more than I owed on my trade in. In these times, with absolutely no end of the automotive disaster in sight, I scooped it up. Now I just sit here, a grumpy old man, waiting impatiently 29 days for it.

My original build date was tomorrow, and dealer said it usually takes 3 weeks from there. But then I found a nice sport for msrp at another local dealer, and that will be my truck tomorrow.

mgm the order was white, but it wasn't my order, just one they had available. I prefer the army green, but this isn't bad either! Was surprised there wasn't a line-x bed so that's on the short list.

yes it is! I wanted the bed more than the rear seats. Should still fit a little kiddo back there or some dogs when needed. Only other shot I have for now. Finance guy wasn't there and I'm putting this in my business name to get some depreciation and that required an extra step through toyota. So tomorrow at 11am they have my penciled in to go grab it.

I picked up my 2021 a few weeks ago. It was hard to get. No local dealers had any, but one did have one due in so I put a deposit down to hold it. Once it came in, I went in and sealed the deal.

I did have to pay MSRP, which I was expecting. They refused to negotiate. But the trade-in on my Tacoma made my overall deal palatable. I had that 2020 Tacoma for over a year and they gave me more on the trade-in than I paid for it when I picked it up. They ended up selling it for $5k more than the original MSRP.

In the end, I got the truck that I wanted and I'm very happy with it. I'm not bothered by paying MSRP to get it because I'm happy with what I have now. I plan to keep it for a long time.

I considered waiting for the 2022s, but I really wanted one more V8 while I could get one. Every time I start it up, that V8 sound makes it completely worth it (to me).
