5.7L Fluid Specs?

Just bought a 2007 5.7L and am new to this forum - my first post.

What are the fluid capacities, specs, etc. for the engine, transmission, differential.

Is there anything other than just the engine, transmission and rear differential?

I'm surprised I couldn't find the fluid specs in the owner's manual.

They're listed in the manual, start at page 583.

So... what engine oil ya gonna use?

 

For transfer case/transmission and diffs - amsoil.
For engine, Redline, the data is better than amsoil for engines.

I do see there are a lot of dedicated schools of thought on oil. I might break a few of those paradigms over time - especially in regards to thermal efficiency over time.

 

Use whatever oil you want ..... Your "used" 5.7L already has miles on it, and, unless you have a comprehensive maintenance log, who knows what oil was used in it before you got it. These engines are ultra reliable regardless of the engine oil used, as long as serviced routinely.

 

Does anyone see any issue with the volume of fluids and types for the following? 2007 5.7 liter

2. Automatic Transmission fluid - 3.2 quarts ATF WS – going to use
Red Line D6 AFT Auto Trans Fled Gal (30705)

3. Transfer case - GL-5 -

This thread looks more like a "promo pitch" for Amsoil and Redline lubricants.........

IMO, ANY lubricant that meets OE specs will protect the driveline / powertrain.

 

I believe you're going to be far short on ATF.

Maybe 4x the amount you posted.?

 

Hmmm, not sure - on page 584 of the 2007 Owner's Manual, it says for ATF WS, 3 liters or 3.2 quarts.

Do you really mean about 12 quarts?

@jbrnigan, I work for neither company. My friend who has been an Amsoil dealer for years didn't get back to me in the last several days so I'm going with Redline. Yes, spec oil will protect it, but not all protection is equal. As I mentioned in a post elsewhere, small differences that are insignificant to most people are very significant to me for my purposes.

 

Are you doing a drain and fill on the tranny, or are you disconnecting a cooler hose to fully drain it? It’s about a 12-13 qt job as I recall to pull the hose.

Out of curiosity, why do so many here recommend against getting a transmission flush?

 

toyota claim their transmission don't need service, I think...

 

Flushing the trans fluid can be risky if you don't know if it has been done often. It can cause some build up and particulates to become dislodged in the trans and sometime this build up is better left untouched as it's actually what is keeping the trans working right. This is why many suggest doing multiple drain and fills. When draining from the drain plug you won't get anywhere near all of the fluid out. I believe the capacities you have listed for the trans are for drain and fill.
Google "why not to flush transmission fluid" and I'd say you'll find some good stuff.

There are threads all about it on here. Your transmission doesn't have a dipstick (as far as I know) only a fill and drain hole and theres a procedure to deal with that correctly.

Hopefully someone with more knowledge with transmissions will chime in in the later hours of the day as I definitely am no expert just sharing some of the stuff I have gathered.

I’ve been bit in the arse after changing trans fluid on a high mileage car. Even with just a drain and fill at 160k or so, the trans crapped out a couple of months later. Granted it was a BMW but still.

I first heard not to change original trans fluid (at high miles)more than 30 years ago, and decided to tempt fate anyway and lost lol. That being said, I’ve done drain and fills on my high mileage Toyota’s and have lived to tell about it (so far).
