How am I basically maxed out the GVWR of 7200 with a rpod 190? Makes no sense. So by this measurement, I’m 200 from being maxed? Even with a 3500 lb rv?

No. Only the tongue weight goes to your total GVWR.

Is your truck modified? New floor mats? Bed liner? Tonneau cover? WDH? Several passengers? It all adds up.

Add his two axle weights and he is at 7000 lbs. That's 200 shy of the GVWR. He is correct.

The gross vehicle weight rating tells you how much your vehicle can weigh safely. This figure includes curb weight (what your vehicle weighs when empty of passengers or materials) plus the weight of passengers, accessories, fuel, any other materials carried inside the cabin, and “tongue weight” of a tow trailer (normally 10-20% of the combined tow load and trailer weight).

Yup. I’m basically getting ripped apart in a FB group, they are all saying who cares what the payload is as long as your under the tow capacity. These guys are all towing 38’ 9000lb trailers. It’s quite cringey. I really want to tow legally. So I’m clarifying, looks like I can go up a trailer of about +200 tongue of what I currently am.

Yup, GVWR is how heavy it can be. GVWR of a Tundra is ~7200 lbs. His steer (front) axle is at 3600 lbs. His drive (rear) axle is at 3400. Ignore the trailer axle and his truck, with the tongue weight is 3600+3400=7000. GVWR minus the actual truck weight 7200-7000=200.

He is 200 lbs. shy of his GVWR. Not sure how you are missing that or how you think showing me the definition of GVWR is going to alter the math.

Tundras have low payloads and it's not hard to hit the GVWR.

Was that with all your gear and passengers in your truck?

The Tundra ratings generally restrict it to lightweight travel trailers under the 20-22 foot length. You'll find a few exceptions, but if you are planning to tow a big trailer AND stay within payload...well, the Tundra might be the wrong truck for the job.

Yes all the gear and wife/dogs, full tank of gas. We found a slightly larger rv, mainly the floorplan is bigger. So we are upgrading to that. The hitch weight is about 500, and dry is 5000. So now I’m really bumping up to the payload cap. But I think it’ll stay under if I continue with the WDH, and correct loading of the rv.

the above weights are also with basically
Full black/grey tanks. So I’m sure that weighed on the hitch about 50lbs.

See if you can scale it before buying. Might help the decision-making process.

Sadly, you sometimes have to choose which is more important; the truck or the trailer.

Doubt I’ll be able to as it’s 5 hours away. But by my math, we load only about 400lbs of gear. So with 10% being hitch weight approx, thats 550 on the hitch. So should still be about 50-100 under GVWR

Then it seems like you're fine.

Don't forget that the driver rides for free when it comes to these calculations - you've already been included in the Toyota numbers. You could add your 2nd wife plus a medium size dog.

Wow these really are heavy trucks. If we extrapolated your scale results, nearly every tundra towing a travel trailer is overweight

Every higher trim model, anyway. Seems like the Platinums have closer to 800 lbs payload, rather than the ~1200 lbs the SR5s have.

Yup. It’s pretty frustrating on Facebook how everyone doesn’t care. I’d say it’s fairly important to stay within or near weight limits. I’m an airline pilot, so this is kind of my job…weight and balance lol. Maybe I’m overthinking it.

OP, the payload on my Tundra is 1350. With a 4800 pound trailer, a bed loaded with bicycles, and the 5 of us, we are at the payload capacity. We tow fine, but I would not want to try to tow a 7000 or 8000 pound trailer, which is the next trailer that my wife wants. Sadly, I'm contemplating a move to a 3/4 ton or a Nissan XD.

We are sticking with the tundra. So we have to find a trailer that fits. I think we found one, the apex nano 208BHS with Murphy bed.

    I like you guys.

The only thing I have to add is I would not be afraid to run a bit heavy with properly setup suspension and a super dialed in WDH setup. I questions how often those guys running a 1000 pounds over are actually using their equipment. I also question where they are using it.

Just keep a watch on the trailer hitch weight - I’ve done a ton of research that suggests whatever the rated numbers state, you most likely will be much higher in reality with batteries, propane tanks, etc.

Lots of truth to that. My trailer has a claimed tongue weight of 455 lbs empty. My trailer, fully loaded (but with dry tanks) comes in at about 4100 lbs (3615 lbs empty). If you go conservative and figure 15%, that would be 615 lbs of tongue weight on the truck when loaded. I bought a scale and measured it and it rang in at 750 lbs.
