Tundra Exhaust Cut Off Valve

I was having a discussion with a friend about what type of exhaust system would be best for my 5.7L, performance is important as is sound. We got to the point of the discussion where drone came up and how it wouldn't be an issue for me but it could be for mama and the kids... His suggestion was an electric exhaust cut off valve.

What are your thoughts, suggestions, comments....has anyone on here run this setup?

 

Not a bad idea. Would i do it to my own? NO. Your adding more back pressure on the engine when its closed causing more problems down the line in the long run. Imo.

 

When it's closed doesn't it just run out through the existing exhaust system? I don't know exhaust systems, how does that create back pressure?

 

I had to do some more research on this (i remember this back in the 90's). First off depends on how they set up (plumping wise) it if it will apply more back pressure. Next thing is what happens if it get stuck open or closed ( in northern states where salt is used) i guess you will be replacing it do to corrosion or ( motors go bad) . . Third with todays ECM's you might get 02 sensor cel light or the engine run richer do to fast escape of exhaust not getting sampled from the 02 sensors good enough.

Cool factor is there dont get me wrong. Will you gain Hp out of it its questionable do to the ecm and lost of some back pressure if the Ecm can make the compensation quickly when opening or closing it.

 

You're mostly likely right about the ECM and sensors. Like I said, I know nothing about exhaust systems but I know I like the sound. I think I can probably achieve the sound I want with a cat back system but the ability to go stealth mode with the touch of a switch is awesome. Someone has to have done the research as to whether or not the computer and its sensors are affected. It also seems to me like that actuator motor is just one more thing to break down and have to deal with and like you said before if it's stuck open (or closed) that would really suck. There are tons of videos on you tube of people installing these cut offs on cars, trucks and hot rods. It just seems like there wouldn't be an issue but then again they may have F U money and not care about it, then there's the illegal aspect of it and passing inspection.

 

Back in the day I used cable actuated cutouts on my rebuilt 57 CJ5. Was my first rebuild project. I took auto shop and metal shop all four years in high school when high schools were still doing it.It had a Corvette 283 V8, Muncie 4speed, Edebrock intake, Holley 650 quad, Hooker headers, the cutouts, Cherry bombs, Jackman rims, and Desert Dog tires. Hauled ass. I used to run it in the local mud and sand drags they used to have in Winchester Bay, Oregon. It was pretty loud before I put in the cutouts. Stupid loud with cutouts. Loved it. I opened and closed the cutouts from the dash mounted cable. Exhaust went straight thru the C Bombs when closed. Exhaust dumped out just before the C Bombs when opened. Basically a simple setup. This was in 75 (I was 19 then, so yes I'm an old fart) before you had to deal with tripping up the computer and such.If I'm not mistaken the Bully Dog will memorize different setups such as with cutoffs open/cutoffs closed so you can recall them at anytime depending on what you may be running. I would check with BD on that. Mufflers.....You might check out BAmufflers. Other guys on this site have good things to say about them. I am saving up scratch now to get some BA's. They are not built until you order them.​

 

There is an outfit here in Aurora, CO called Exhaust Pros. You might give them a call on what to do. They are the local go to guys in the Denver area for all kinds of setups for the weekend racers/four wheelers that are otherwise daily drivers. If you ever make it to Bandemere drag strip out at Morrison an ask guys who did their setup, Exhaust Pro is mention a lot. They would have a lot of experience with cutouts on daily drivers and their affect on ECU, sensors, etc.

 

Has anyone added cut outstanding as of lately and if so what brand is recommended

 

My buddy put them on his. He’s since sold it. It was super annoyingly loud when open. Didn’t set any codes. I believe he put two just in front of the mufflers. Electric.

 

A friend of mine has this set up on his 504 big block Chevy he says it's the difference between a mistaminor of a felony lol it is a coll idea but I would just do a regular exhaust unless you really want to drag race your truck.

 

It actually makes your truck less powerful. You need a proper balance of backpressure and scavenging to make more power.

 

i love it but i have NEVER seen a reliable kit that will last more than one ohio winter
