One frame rail ground, cleaned, coated, ready for reinforcement.

 

Is that a long hole along the bottom of the frame rail?

 

There is a small spot of burned hair on the top/back of my head. It feels like melted plastic. Can't tell you what it looks like.
Part of my beard was on fire at one point also. That one got me hopping around. (beard is short, like a week's scruff in length)
I keep finding new burns on my hands and arms.

You fab new pieces or use a kit from SafeTCap?

 

I bought a kit. I don't recall the brand off the top of my head. The pieces fit well, but the holes for the skid plate were not quite right. Nothing that ovalized holes and large washers couldn't sort right out tho.

 

There are a lot of fun things you could do with that moat too.

I badly want a moat. When we were shopping for a house in 2016 the realtor asked us what we wanted. My wife had a list of 'normal' requests.
I said I wanted a small house with attached 2-car, huge detached garage/pole building, a bunch of land, and a moat.
"Why do you want a moat?"
"To keep MFers out....and give my moose a place to chill when he's not doing moose things."
"What? You want a moose too?"
"Yeah, imagine being the poor bastard who gets past the moat and meets the moose." LOLOLOLOL

 

I took tomorrow off too.

 

After procrastinating for 6 months I finally installed some parts on the RAV4. The front struts were a breeze compared to the rear. Also did the front brakes and sway bar links.

The top bolt for the rear brakes was so tight I could only fit a open end wrench. It was a bitch. I wimped out on the serpantine belt for now. Zero room to work in there.

 

And done. Next time it'll get a longer brine, I'll bump the temp up a little, and wrap it sooner.

It stalled around 160 and I let it go too long so it dried out a little but not terrible.

 

I try to brine for 12-24 hours, I never wrap pork butts, and I spritz(I like to sing” putting on the spritz” while I do it) and I’m rarely dry. Also a water bath in the smoker is mucho important

 

I did 24 on the brine possible I didn't have enough in the bowl too.

I sprayed it every 30-45. I did try a lower temp this time which I think may have contributed.

Planning on doing a 10-12lb butt next weekend and a couple chickens so I'll have a do-over. I just have to find something big enough to brine everything and keep it cool.

 

I think you must not have a dog. Just the thought of putting a sandwich that close to the ground...

I don’t know if I got this brand but something similar from my local restaurant supply joint. I specifically got them for brining and thawing of big cuts.
I have mini fridge that it fits perfect in.

 

Can confirm. Have been on the receiving end of an annoyed moose's expression of displeasure.

Are there beefier tie rod ends available for the FGT's? I've searched briefly with no success.

Not much to it really. I was hiking in a remote area of northern British Columbia, skirting a small pothole lake. I stopped to watch a pair of moose calves frolicking in the shallows. After a few minutes I idly wondered where their momma was. Right about then I heard a snort and a stomp behind me. Ah, there she is. There was a moment of collective calm as I turned to aquire a visual, decide to what level of panic would be be utilized and which direction of exit was least likely to result in me getting a hoof shaped tattoo while she considered the best way to chastise me for getting between her and the calves.

Once we had reach our conclusions, chaos ensued. I exited stage left posthaste at panic level 2 while she opted for the full frontal charge. I probably would have had to hit panic level 3 but during our mutual considerations, I had noticed something momma moose had not. There was a tree that had enough sturdy, low hanging branches within a few yards. I was able to use said tree to aid me in the performance of a startled squirrel immitation. Moose can't change direction quickly so when I went left, momma moose thundered by before hammering on the brakes and spinning around to regain lock-on. That gave me enough time to get up the tree. Once she figured out where I went, she paced around below me. I originally attempted to apologize for the mix up but she began head butting the tree a bit and muttering insults so naturally I sent a few choice words her way and refused to leave my perch.

15 minutes later or so, she felt I had learned my lesson (I had not, but that's another story) so she wandered off to collect the two calves and head off into the wild yonder. That day confirmed to me a great adage of the Canadian wilderness:

"Black bears can climb trees, moose can't and grizzlies aren't supposed to."

 

See, I knew I needed to hear that story!

Glad you enjoyed it. I don't write much outside of forums, and not too often about my backcountry adventures. When I do I attempt to channel the spirit of one of my favorite outdoor writers, Patrick F. McManus.

I think a book collab between @Tundra2 and I would be interesting. It could be called Great White North to Dirty South: Misadventures in the Backwoods.

It has been bothering me that some people got banned from the forum for what appear to be arbitrary reasons and I believe they should be justly invited back. They contributed and helped. I see "Code of Conduct" violations occur multiple times daily blatantly and flagrantly on many of the threads, yet nothing is done, so why single out those who were banned? Especially if it happens on a thread titled "Lunch Table". A real lunch table has real people sitting around it talking about real things. Kind of ironic to boot people for that. And even if it didn't happen on "Lunch Table", I see the violations all over the place. I guess it bothers me that I, as a 55 year old adult, am being treated like a child, insulated and protected from "bad guys". I find it intellectually insulting. I don't need protected. Yes, the forum is private property and I'm confident that you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone here more defensive of property rights than me, but at least be consistent with the banning then and don't show prejudice or bias in who is banned or why. Is consistency too much to ask?

Again, I believe they should be invited back.

NB: To be clear, this is not about politics. I'm actually apolitical and have no dog in that hunt. I could care less.

 

It's a mixed bag, and the mods generally do a good job. They cannot be everywhere, and rely on reporting from members. Once a person gets a ban (or two) they are on the radar and their likelihood of content being seen by a mod goes up. Most offenses get the ban as described in the CoC, but shitty attitudes after a ban or repeated offenses for the same thing will eventually get a permanent. I think there is some degree of personal preference, but that happens when you have people involved. Sometimes the mods will warn in a PM when people are skirting the line on taboo topics, or even other members will give a heads up about it.

The barring of topics has nothing to do with insulating snowflakes. Heated topics go sideways, cause rifts, and generally cause the whole forum to devolve into little tribes and the division kills the purpose and soul of the forum. It's also done so the forum stays SFW. Nobody wants to be called into HR because the browsed the forum on their break and there happened to be boobs all over the screen that day.

I agree with you. There are a several members that I miss, because they were helpful, entertaining, or both. One thing I think could be improved in the CoC is a clear and followed escalation list for the bans. Politics for example, you get 30 days per the CoC, but it says nothing about being permanently banned. There should be an SOP like "X number of bans for Y offense will result in a permanent ban' or something.
