Two airboxes -> two air filters & two snorkels.

I'm not sure that I agree with that design decision. Would it have two throttle bodies and two mass air flow sensors?

Unnecessary complexity.

 

Sorta reminds me of the BMW V12 I used to own. It had 2 airboxes (and 2 MAF, and 2 throttle bodies...)

The 1UR-FSE 4.6 V8 in the old LS 460 uses dual airboxes, no problems.

Yes, the V35A has two throttle bodies.

What is under these two covers?

 

Look at the LS500 to get an idea. Driver side is brake fluid, not sure what the passenger side is?

 

What is the blue looking container next to the upper radiator hose? Looks like power steering fluid, but I'd be absolutely stunned if they kept hydraulic power steering (for better or for worse).

But the windshield wiper fluid fill port is right in front of the driver's side air filter box.

The engine cover says "Twin Turbo" and not iFORCE MAX. No blue on it either, so the hybrid speculation of the MAX seems realistic.

The blue looking reservoir seems like PS fluid. I thought "modern" vehicles used electric PS?

The wiper fluid is right behind the drivers headlight in front of the intake. You can see the cap. I say drivers even though it's probably a RH drive vehicle...

 

No it's not my friend. Its the PS fluid reservoir. Go look under your hood and locate the PS fluid reservoir and compare how it looks and how the lid looks. Most cars have their windshield washer fluid reservoir located down lower and the fill tube comes up to the top. The washer fluid tube typically has a flip cap and the PS fluid reservoir has that round grooved cap that looks like a cog. In this picture the windshield wash fluid fill tube is clearly in front of the driver side air box.

 

Doesn’t lane warning and return nudge back into lane require electronic steering or can they also do it with a traditional power steering pump? Agree that the windshield fluid is up front of the air box. That looks more like the correct cap for wiper fluid.

 

Wheres the battery?

 

The 300 series will have hydraulic power steering. Any of the renderings from the series of videos Toyota has posted on youtube covering the 300s technical aspects clearly show a hydraulic rack. Personally, this makes me very happy as the vast majority of EPS systems feel like crap.

Ford hides the battery under a cover like that now in the explorer. All this plastic under the hood looks stupid, hopefully it at leasts keeps components from getting chewed by rodents!

 

Oh you poor devil. An E60 M5, did it eat the rod bearings while you had it or fail due to something else?

I got to drive a few when I worked for a BMW dealer. That was an intoxicating sound from that V10, but I wouldn’t trust one of those cars to make it past warranty.

 

My guess is it is coolant reservoir for the front radiator handling the air to liquid intercoolers.

The alternatives for a twin turbo V layout engine are:

1.) Design a cylinder head that exhausts to the inside of the V and allows the turbos to sit in the V and use a unitized air inlet and air box. Then route all piping and intercooler etc to what will for sure be two intake manifolds and two throttle bodies.

2.) On a conventional cylinder head with the turbos on the outside edges of the heads, design a bunch of convoluted plumbing to try to unite them on one air box while also ensuring even air flow to both so that both turbos work properly. Then adding on the necessary plumbing to the intercooler and intake manifold.

If you look at it that way Toyota is choosing the most simple solution.

 

So the two rectangular side grills under the headlights end up being very functional. Like the idea of the intercoolers having their own cooling system and that they don’t set on top of the engine like others do. Like it, each turbo has its own intake and intercooler. They just need to complete it and give each turbo its own separate exhaust out the back. Maybe that is why it has been reported by some of a tail pipe on the left and by other on the right, and in the end it will be a dual exhaust. Also, like the fact they have an auxiliary electric fan, apparently they found a need under certain conditions that they need to blow more heat off. Getting why they have a big porous grill.
