    A truck? No not recently.

I have a bunch of coworkers that change their trucks on the typical 3-5 year new car buyer cycle. Mostly domestics.

If there’s anything they love it’s talking about how much they got off the sticker due to their super negotiation skills. Prior to this year most of those guys were seeing significantly lower prices by percentage of MSRP that 14% off on Ford, Ram, and GM trucks.

It will be interesting to see if the domestics go back to lots of inventory on the ground and big incentives or keep lower inventory and go for higher gross profit per sale. The dealers will probably have a different perspective than the manufacturers.

I know at least 3 people who did just that where I work; meanwhile, when I bought my Tundra last year, I got almost a full $8K off the vehicle, plus $200 in parts and a lifetime engine warranty.

The current Tundra will make a great used truck for someone down the road because it will be reliable and durable past 150K miles.

As you astutely point out, and are being criticized for, this is meaningless for the majority of 1st owners of said Tundra who will not have the truck that long. Aside from strong resale value, the current Tundra in my estimation doesn’t offer much to a typical new truck buyer who will not keep it longer than the first set of tires.

    Ouch.

Hey the salesman deserves to make a living, but dang…. full MSRP on a domestic truck. Was that this year?

That was in the last 2 weeks. LOL I bought mine last year because

    - the least I've put on any of my vehicles in the last 15 years has been 140K (most had 200K - 300K)
    - they had huge discounts for like 2 months
    - I knew I could pay it off quick
    - I plan on keeping it for at least a decade.

Granted, I *may* trade it in for a new one in a year or so but that is ONLY because we're in such a weird place with resale values right now.

All 3 of them told me they would never consider a Tundra because they were more expensive....and all of them paid >$55K while I paid $40K.

I predict the 2022 Tundra will have seating for 5 people. I think that’s pretty accurate.

Last year would have been a great time to buy.

Shit talking aside (I can’t help myself sometimes when it comes to digging at current owners who are already bashing the 2022), if I were looking to buy the current truck 2020 would have been the year to do it.

For your goals and habits of driving a vehicle forever the last couple of years of the current Tundra are the best bet on the market.

Your buddies at work though, (assuming they trade more often) might change trucks as often as you buy new socks. If you were in their shoes this year and just HAD to buy a new truck, and knew you’d trade it in 3-5 years, and knew you were going to pay sticker would you buy a Tundra or a domestic? Guys like that either have enough money to not care, or aren’t concerned for other reasons about being upside down so why not be upside down in something fancy and nicer to drive?

    Currently. Will the 2022 though?

I predict seats for 5, and the front bench as an option goes away.

Are they? Actual details are so sparse it’s all rumors.

I base my “prediction” on observation of Tundras on the road/parking lots that I see. Take rate on the SR with a bench up front seems pretty low, but maybe it’s high enough for Toyota to offer going forward.

Yeah, I caught crap for buying from my parents...but a year later they flat out told me "We were wrong - you got one hell of a deal."

If I KNEW I was going to pay sticker? Still Toyota, honestly, but for four reasons, at least two (I think) of which you'll agree with:

    1. They tend to own their vehicles for a long time too.
    2. Reliability - I own my vehicles (usually) for 150+ miles and 7+ years.
    3. The closest 3 other dealerships (2 Fords and a Chevy/GMC) are jerks.
    4. Resale value.

It's tough for me to put myself in others' shoes, because honestly, SO many people buy vehicles without considering the whole package. (E.g., I'd love a diesel, but don't need one, and given increased maintenance costs, it wouldn't make sense...but I know tons who buy diesel because low-end torque and that's it.) I'm sure some do the same with Tundras as well. The goofiest thing is that I work with a bunch of IT guys...you'd think they'd do tons of research (and many of us do) but I know a LOT of one-issue truck buyers, and that one issue isn't usually the stuff you'd think it is (e.g., capability, or reliability, etc.)

Funny thing is that due to several issues I had with my last 2 trucks, I was looking to buy a used Tundra; but quickly realized that the market was in such an odd place at the time that it was the best time almost in history to buy new.

Something must have been going on with that particular Tacoma, I have had 2 of them, a 2016 and 2020, I just returned from a 2000 mile trip towing a kayak trailer (not heavy) and averaged 17. Day to day around town suburban driving I get 18-20 and have seen as high as a tank at 22. Both the 2016 and 2020 were about the same mpg wise. The noises are the direct injection and cleaning cycle...the new tundra will probably have them too. The trans shifting is sometimes annoying but like others have said, there are ways to mitigate it without modifying the truck.

I’ve driven a 2019, sounded the same as this 2021. Basically it turned me off completely to the Taco. I could not imagine towing anything more than 3000 lbs with the Taco. Safely..
