Considering a complete truck overhaul. Worth it?

I’m just looking for opinions on having my 2011 overhauled. New paint and off road bumpers and suspension and few other small things vs selling it and getting a 2021 Tundra. Since it’s the last V8 possibly.

You guys that have repainted and put new bumpers and suspension on your older truck, have you been happy with the results? Or do you think it makes more sense to “sell high” and wait for a drop in prices to get a newer truck?

current truck in picture. Bought it new and only have 55k miles, that why I was thinking of overhauling it.

I'd at least see what the dealer will give you before going nuts. after only 10 years, why is the paint so f'd up?

I used it as a “work Truck” and I did not baby the exterior. But the inside is still really nice. Good idea about getting a trade value before spending $$$. Thanks

I would find out what the value is for trade in first. Then weigh out a few important things.

There is a big difference between a modified and customized truck vs a brand new bone stock truck. Going custom on things gives you the opportunity to make it exactly what you need, and should be cheaper than buying a new truck if this is paid off. I'm very big on having a slightly older vehicle and spending a bit on maintenance and customizing it rather than having monthly payments. Then again I do almost all the work myself so I'm not bleeding on labor.

If you keep it, what would your vision be? What is the ball park you would spend on parts? Are you installing yourself? If not, labor can double the cost. Is it on great shape mechanically? Kept up on maintenance?

Will you continue to need a work truck? If so, does spending $50k on something that will look like this after a few years make sense?

DIY paint correction or take it to a pro? You’d be surprised how many scratches a good paint correction can take out! 55k miles? Mechanically like new!

I have about $5000 in mods…paint correction and ceramic coating was $650

It sounds like a 20k mod. I’ll go for a new truck with that kind of money.

I say wait till the new Tundra comes out or at least more info released by Toyota. Toyota might still offer a 5.7L V8 until the stock gets depleted. I remember when the 2007 Tundra first came out. There was a 4.7L and a V6 engine offered for awhile.

My truck is an 08 Limited with 135k miles with some tasteful mods. Nothing over the top but I keep it clean and overly maintained. I literally don’t go a day without somebody saying something about my truck whether at the pump, Home Depot, or just parked at a job site. The Gen 2’s can look as good if not better than a Gen 3 with some mods. I am about to reupholster the interior with katzkins to replace the OEM leather as it is starting to wear on the driver’s seat. As much as I’ve put into my truck, it beats having a payment and has been crazy reliable.

My '07 Crewmax 4X4 has 72K on it. Over the years it has been well maintained, but, has had 14 years worth of "road wear", rock chips (touched up) and wear parts, (tires, wipers, belts, hoses, etc.) Truck is always garaged and has no bent or dented sheet metal, upholstery is good - excellent. Truck is professionally detailed every fall, in and out. On a little bit of a lark (because of rumors that the 5.7L V-8 was to be phased out, I took it to a dealer this past March. They offered me $12,500 on a trade for a similar 2021 SR-5 that they "sale priced" at $45K. A little "on-line" research suggested that the "real" private party resale price was probably nearer to $17 - 18K. I "LIKE" this truck for all the reasons that people buy Tundras. I concluded that I could drive it for another 15 years and for 20 grand, I could paint it, recondition the interior, mod it and maintain it in an as-new condition, and have lots of money left over. FWIW

Another vote for keep it, and mod it how you want it to be - unless you need an ugly grill and a tv. o_O

55k miles is hardly broken in. I would do as stated above - get a professional paint correction and whatever mods you want. That’s a beautiful truck.

The only thing I like on the new tundra are the adaptive cruise control and blind spot monitor

I think he had just sprayed it off in that pic and the paint is partially drying. Find a good detailer to buff and polish the paint and I think you'll be happy. Nothing wrong with that truck

I vote to keep it. Your truck is not even broke in yet. So....Suspension $2-3K. Debadge it. Then goto Line-X and have them put this on it (see link) in a color of your choice....Done!

Well thanks for all the comments. I’m now getting an Idea of what I need to do to my truck to be content with it another 5-10 years

-sanding the rust inside of the bed and spray raptor bed liner.
-look into paint correction or possibly try this myself.
Dealer said my shocks were starting to “leak”
    - looking into a new suspension setup eventually.
    - would love to get off-road bumpers eventually.
-noticed that chrome on grill is bubbling up in area. Need to replace or blackout?

being that there are not many new double cab 2021s available now, and the fact that it would mean having a payment again, will probably go this route.

Look like the clear coat is gone tho. The paint job is the most expensive. Paint job, vinyl wrap cost like 4-6k easy. Unless you diy plastic dip, also you could liner the whole bottom half, below the bumper line.

Did you just spray off or wash the truck in the pic? Looks like it to me, from the pic I don't see clear coat failure. I see a half dried vehicle and where it dried vs. wet, I think that is what is making it look like the clear coat is failing.

Yeah. You are correct. It’s wet and drying in the picture. I think the clear coat is ok.

Watch some YouTube videos on a griots dual action polisher G9 or G15. Very user friendly and very hard for a beginner to mess up paint polishing with it. You will be amazed with the results.

Much easier just pay a guy detailing or ceramic coat that baby, if the paint is ok

Well, yes. But I have a hard time finding and trusting a good detailer that knows what they are doing. I see so many vehicles with buffer burns and holograms in the paint. (a lot right from the dealer or body shop) I'm like, yep either you or your detailer don't know WTF they're doing.

dealer and body shop are the same kind of crooks, they take money from customer or insurance and pocket it. they only paying for a $100 detailing...what you expect

My .02, if you’re asking online, that means keep the truck. I have a 2010 i considered trading in 2 years ago, glad I didn’t. It works fine, its a great vehicle that is 99% the same as a newer one (pre 22 of course). You have to very different paths laid out. Offroad bumpers vs a brand new super expensive truck. You’re not gonna wanna scratch up the 22 offroad. So you wouldnt need offroad bumpers on a new one…ask yourself, which truck suits your life needs, a really nice new one or a truck you’re not afraid to scratch and dent?

i also wouldn’t spend a ton of money on new paint. Even new paint will get jacked again eventually, and is that expense really worth it on a 10 year old truck? Hardly

My answer is no. You said work truck. Prepping the body for paint would blow the budget if you really are looking for "complete overhaul". My assumption is a work truck will have a number of dings, etc. And then where do you stop...faded plastic parts? Scratches/sand etched/chipped glass replacement? Worn seats? Maybe we have different definitions of "COMPLETE".
