What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

Did you see that at the end of the Tom Woods blog link there's a calculator for measuring shim angles for double-cardan rear shafts?

 

Thats good stuff. Gets me that much closer to ordering some leafs.

 

Finished the 3rd coat, dry, and reinstall of my side mirrors. Looks way better than the chrome without going white caps that stick out too much. These also are powered and heated.

 

Since I've worked 18 of the last 19 days and I'm waiting for the last of my misc parts to roll in for the exhaust manifold change I really haven't had the time to do much to the truck but since I've got 3 days off I thought I'd get rid of the funk and dirt in the interior today. Definitely satisfied with the results and I used this guys method and cleaning solution for the carpet. For the upholstery and door panels I used 4 cans of Tuff Stuff. One of the few products that does what it says, it's readily available and cheap. Topped it off with a Meguiars "New Car" scent Air Refreshening bomb. Not sure of the exact temp here today but it's hot and the interior went from literally soaked and pouring dirty water out of the door jambs to dry in an hour and a half with the windows left down.

Did a full brake fluid flush today, for the first time. I know it's supposed to be and easy procedure but to me it was a major pain in the ass. Not sure why. Brakes feel better now though.

Also tried to change transfer case oil but the fill plug is stuck and I banged up my thumb when the socket wrench slipped. Got a bruise there now. I sprayed some Ballistol on the plugs and hoping that helps loosen them.

 

You can smack the plugs with a ballpein hammer, it helps jar the threads loose while slightly compressing the crush washer; which then makes it super easy to remove

 

I was afraid to whack my socket wrench because I didn't want to strip the threads. Did the counter clockwise and clockwise back and forth method. Gradually got it out.

The Trifold hard cover has worked well for me. If a daily driver (and work truck) it may be a different story. I've had to remove mine a couple of times for large items...

That's probably the better compromise. Easy to work with for a daily, little tougher than a soft tri-fold, not too much work & a 1 person job to remove it when necessary.

 

I used that same cover on my Tundra for a few years before I found my camper shell. It's still in my garage. I really liked being able to walk across it. It made waxing the roof a breeze.

 

OH. That hadn't even occurred to me. DUH.

 

Too my chrome annoyance one step further today. Looks pretty color matched from about 8ft away. Any closer and it’s a bit too bright white but still better than it was.

 

Today I carried 5 loads of limbs and logs from the woods at my place to my designated burn area. The 8' bed in the Tundra came in handy, as it usually does.

 

It looks good. I've actually been contemplating painting a desert camo scheme on mine since I bought it because there are two areas that are losing their clear coat slightly from 20 years of desert UV exposure, one small spot on the hood and most of the rooftop. I don't tend to keep vehicles for long though, so we'll see. If I do keep it long enough and don't like the desert patina it naturally gets I'll do a desert camo job on it and change the wheels to an armory-type look just for the effect.

 

What other options are there for this? What could a paint shop do?

 

Mornin'. Well, a painter could undoubtedly correct it but the truth is I'm not fond of the color to begin with, so I don't really want to spend the money to have it done. I'd rather update the color or do a camo scheme if I keep it for long. The desert is a very harsh environment, so something durable with no clear coat would be optimal. I have other vehicles in the garage, so the truck will never have the luxury of being well-protected from high UV exposure.

 

Took the tundra into the mountains for the long weekend here in NW Montana

 

My dad and i discussed the pro’s and cons of using sequoia p/n’s to rebuild the tundra into a dual zone a/c setup. and, swapping the rear suspension to the sequoias coil and disc to stretch the chassis for a long bed…

But, hes down to head to co with the trailer to pick up a fwd diesel manual shitbox we can build a generator out of.
Its nice to have him solving the worlds problems with me, instead of watching judge judy or the news, and narrating.

 

Spent wkend wrenching and what not along with honoring and celebrating our Independence.

Benched cleaned TB/MAF and replaced plugs few weeks back and finished it off this morning with all new ign coils received from McGeorge yesterday. Also replaced driver side inside door handle bezels and spoiled myself with new oil filler cap

Gave T a good wash and coat of Nu-Finish. First time I've waxed the T in number of years. Been letting fellow down the highway detail and wax about every spring. Forgot how long it takes for my satisfaction and this ole fart is feeling it. Re-installed Tonneau, tailgate and driver side door handles after paint shop finally finished friday. Put new badges on this morning to finish it off. Will replace newly painted bumper after bumper frame removal and painting !



In order to remove bumper frame, I need to revisit the muffler guy that performed the dual exhaust/flowmaster install few years back.

My plan is to have him weld a hanger to truck frame just beyond the end of bumper frame. I'll then drill off rivet head of his initial hanger install and replace rivet with bolt/nut. That will then let me remove bumper frame for cleaning/painting.

Would appreciate any and all other suggestions/thoughts regarding new hanger being welded ?

 

My Master Tailgaters back up camera came today. I'm working on a write up for that. Then I got to the cab and decided to rip out the aftermarket keyless entry. The truck didn't come with key fobs when I got it . Now I'm ripping my seats and carpet out! I'm OCD, help!

 

And it rained, then unveiled these on both sides.
