I think Toyota is straight with their chips from what I've heard. My dealer told me once my car gets built, its about 3 weeks to dealer. I have a build date of 7/15.

Love those land cruisers, my aunt always has one.

I have a similar question, what's the timeline between allocation and delivery to dealer lot? Reason I ask is I'm next on a list for TRD Pro, so I'm trying to gauge how the timeline shakes out.

I was allocated 2 weeks ago, was told production was 7/7, and delivery would be end of July-early august. So 4-6 weeks from allocation to delivery?

maybe someone who has actually received a truck could speak more to their experience.

So i was never given a "build date" but an estimated "delivery date" and it arrived about 3 days early. I think it has a lot to do with who your regional distributor is. Mine was SE Toyota in Jacksonville FL.

I think you make some reasonable points, but the whole trucks are trucks and people don't want tech is BS. Most new truck owners I see are folks who aren't using them heavy, but rather driving around town. The three domestic truck producers put way more tech in their trucks than ours and despite being unreliable they outsell compared to Tundras. People want tech more than they want reliability...I want both and I think there are lots of folks here who want both too. People say that they prefer reliability over tech, but Toyota is more than capable of doing both

I agree about what many want, but personally I will take reliability over fancy tech any day.

I don't know what tech is in the big 3 trucks, as I never looked at them. I know I'm not interested because they just tend to have too many issues, from my view anyway. But I truly cannot imagine what tech people want that's not already in my Tundra. Heck, my Tundra has more tech in it than I really care to have.

My 2021 Plat arrives in August here in Denver...selling my 2011 Limited TRD. Will be pretty much same black truck just ten years newer. I'm not one for tech...but am looking forward to a few comforts like push button, touch sensor door handles and seat coolers

Man, I’m only 43 yrs but I probably sound 73 lol

When the next gen tundra nears the end of its lifecycle then I’ll pick one up again

My theory is that Tundra owners/loyalists love their V8s and the current styling, even though the basic formula is long in the tooth. If 2021 is the last year of Gen3 & the V8, then I predict that those trucks will actually become more desirable. I just don't think another V6 Toyota is going to take the world by storm the first year of release. Give the 2022 time to catch on, but I still see the original V8 platform being desirable in the long run. Just my opinion...your mileage may vary.

I tend to agree, and the end of the current gen played a huge part in my decision to trade my '18 DB for a '21 CM.

@Shamrock92…the post you have put in this thread are spot on in my opinion. I also agree with many of the member that stated inflation (even though I think it’s here) is speculation…to an extent. But I digress and let’s take all the other factors out of the equation for the moment.

I wanna focus on the “bubble”. I believe it will come IF (yes speculation as well) the gas prices continue to trend they way they are. That in itself will cause buyers to dump non-gas efficient trucks for smaller trucks or cars. I remember in 2008 when I wanted a clean Tacoma when the gas prices were highest. I did 1300 miles in a weeks time searching for the right one. I visited at least 20 car lots/auctions and I was amazed at the amount of beautiful V8 Tundras, F150, ETC ETC for less mileage and money than any Tacoma I looked at. Eventually things will get back to normal however if the price of gas doesn’t stabilize soon it will cause the same market (vehicle) that happened in 2008. And I respect that fact that we can’t predict the future. If I were to drive my Tundra at 90 mph with a 7k trailer on the back in rush hour traffic, I have a good idea of what how bad it can potentially be even if it doesn’t happen…

Just heard the news outta Ford - June sales DOWN 30% (vs May) - but pricing is UP 15% due to reduced incentives for F150.

What’s that tell you - it should be suggesting the competition is making less and pushing higher trims as well as raising ACTUAL price paid (in form of incentives - both direct to consumer and dealer holdback).

If you think this is going to lead to a lower price to consumers in the short term - your betting against the trends for sure.

For the first time in a LONG time - Ford/GM have figured out how to profit from new sales and not rely on things like financing to stay in business. They aren’t gonna give that up just to boost market share. They want to be Apple - not Compaq/HP or Dell. Sell less for more is the new mantra.

Very good thoughts. I have wondered why they haven’t moved to this type of business model a long time ago, except for the fact that they want to upsell you on a more profitable model or added options. I prefer this actually so i could order exactly what i want with no extras if i was in the market for a new vehicle.

There are some good reasons why they could do this on the dealers’ side. Their overhead is already huge. Prime real estate isn’t cheap, so instead of huge parking lots, they could lease that space for another stream of income. For test drives, they can keep a couple of the highest trim models so we can experience the new features. You would see a larger ratio of used vehicles vs. new on a permanent scale. They would more than likely push for the used sale, which is where they can make a larger profit. Why would I as a dealer keep a lot of expensive inventory on hand that is marginal in profit when I don’t have to?
I could have more room for used vehicles that are more profitable.

I also think about how the salesperson gets paid. They make a % of the markup so the further the markup the better. On new cars this is marginal.

Take what is currently happening now. They can’t get new ones and they still have overhead so they have to cover that somehow. As with most businesses, the cost just gets passed down to the customer. Then add on inflation and low supply with high demand, and it’s the perfect storm for outrageous used car prices and no budging on msrp. The dealer has to charge more to keep their doors open.

Toyota is happy I’m sure that they are selling all of their production, sometimes before it hits the lot. This also means they are missing out on sales as well since some people would buy if availability was higher. They can’t offer incentives like rebates because they can’t spread the cost over many units. This won’t be the case forever since supply will eventually catch up. I don’t think the build to order system will work from a manufacturing perspective for the long haul unless you are dealing with higher end vehicles. They won’t be able to take advantage of the economies of scale they do currently. However they might be able to if they reach a certain order amount if it was a demand-only production schedule. I just don’t see that being feasible for a larger manufacturer.

you would be surprised how few would.

last year in April gas was around 70 cents/L in Ontario, Canada, and today is around $1.30/L (diesel costs the same per L), no one has bother jump off the SUV/trucks wagon.

Competition drives down prices, there’s enough existing and upcoming brands in the auto industry to do just that.

You can bet Ford won’t let Toyota outsell on their #1 truck period

The short answer is to why the Big 3 (and to lesser extent all manufacturers not named Tesla) don’t go the BTO route - using showrooms as showcases and then making you just “order” what you like - franchise agreements.

Dealers are franchisee’s - as such they have certain rights and privileges - such as right to secure inventory. Manufacturers can’t just amend these agreements and even if they tried - a lot of dealers would push back hard.

Hell - look at GM, they tried to close Caddy dealers years ago and they fought back…the last thing I would be doing as a businessman is arguing with someone wanting to give me a pile of cash to rip up my agreements to buy and resell Cadillac’s. But long timers just don’t see that the markets are changing and refuse to adapt.

On top of that - BTO means you need a great supply chain/manufacturing program which likely requires all production in as few of plants as possible. Again - makers like Honda could likely implement this…GM/Ford - not as easily.

The bigger you get - the harder it is to change your game plans. I personally would welcome fewer options/the Japanese model of pick a package/trim to save on cost - but some won’t. Fleets for example a good example - they want every car the same (as cheap as possible) and this doesn’t always work in their favor.

I think a lot will depend on gas prices. Toyota dealers around here couldn't give away Tundras (trucks and SUVs in general) when gas hit $4.

So... pay $60k for a 2021 Tundra today. If gas goes up another $1+ demand is going to soften considerably. Add a double-whammy if Toyota offers a 2022 Tundra with maybe 30% improved mpg. 2021 buyer today might be looking at $20k haircut in value on his new truck.

Of course if ya need the truck and plan on keeping it 10-20 years regardless... it don't matter so much.

Agree, I think the new agenda is to have Expensive gas for the long term, $5-$10 per gallon would not surprise me, helping to accelerate the “EV” products.

I love my V8, but I can see the 5.7 Tundras dropping in value in the next few years.

But if you want a brand new 2021 5.7 tundra then your time is running out fast. Your gonna need to find the best deal you can and buy it!

If you don’t mind waiting a 12-18 months then you will probably be able to pick up a 2021 lightly used for less.

I’m filling up while I type this in eastern GA. 87 is 2.68/gallon.

The implications of $5-$10 fuel prices is political suicide. No politician loves electric vehicles more than their own power and bank account.
